This generation Sonata is notorious for going thru standard taillight bulbs. LEDs are the way to go on 2011 thru 2019 Sonatas.

Thanks for the video! I have a 2013 Sonata and had the same issue. I bought syllvania 1157 cool white led’s and they work perfectly. Just plug and play, no load resistors needed. Both running lights and brake lights work.

I have the 2013 and just replaced the wiring harness and the entire light assembly a short in the wiring and the oem bulbs are so hot they have melted the housing.

Is the brake light a “dual action” bulb? Because my back tail light(in the number four position of the owners manual) doesn’t light up when I put the parking lights on but it does light up when I hit the brake pedal.

After watching this video , I went to Auto Zone & bought two red LED brake light bulbs for my 2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T : the cost was $ 19.99 - as compared to $ 6.99 for regular / non-LED bulbs . Replaced just one of the old bulb on the driver side , and compared intensities - at night - of the new LED , with the old (on the passenger's side) : NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE . I wish I could - can't , because plastic case was cut opened - return the LED to get my money back . .

Hello, I would recommend switching despite the similar light intensity. I just replaced the entire L and R rear light harness for the second time because the darn brake bulbs seized into the socket due to running hot over the years. I did not think to go LED (run much cooler) till I saw this vid.

Do these bulbs fit into the same socket as the factory bulbs (2357's) or does it need a different housing? Asking b/c I just watched another video before I found this one and the guy said something about a new housing?

The base of the 2357 bulb is the same as the 1157 bulb. There was an OEM LED tail lamp housing as far as I know, and that is probably what you saw in the other video. This video is a retrofit to replace the incandescent 2357 bulbs with LED 1157 bulbs and the bulb bases are the same.

@@DavidJWarEagle Life saver. My daughter's Sonata bulbs keep going out and this is even after we got the whole back light panel replaced (mechanic thought that was the issue). She has 3 bulbs out now...they go out at once it seems....do all the lights in the back take the same size bulb do you know?

I've been douing research and most Catalog's online say 2357 for hyundai sonata instead of 1157 so any reason you used 1157?

I looked at the ZEVO bulbs but decided against them because they have only one LED on each side and many reviews said that the ZEVOs were not bright enough. I haven’t tried the Philips Ultinon yet. Regarding 2357 vs 1157 bulbs, the base is exactly the same so for a LED bulb there is no difference. If memory serves me the 2357 (incandescent) is supposed to be brighter than the 1157 (incandescent). On this Hyundai Sonata it didn’t matter which one we tried. They both would burn out frequently, although the 1157 (incandescent) seemed to last longer than the 2357. The LED replacements I used in the video are still working great according to the owner.

@@MrBlessed987 Hi Leon!!! The 2357 is the original light bulb for the brake light. My Sonata CONSTANTLY "eats through" the 2357's like crazy!!! Every 4-5 months I'm purchasing a new brake light bulb. It's ridiculous. I saw another video that talked about how HOT these 2357's run, and sometimes they even melt the socket housing. Hyundai should have used fiberglass instead of cheap plastic (but that's another issue). Long story short, the 1157 incandescent's are the same exact size (so they're 100% compatible), but run about 30% cooler. These 1157 LED's are a little brighter and likely run even cooler than the 1157 incandescents. The LED's (if installing on the rear brake) could *POTENTIALLY* cause other side-effect problems with some lights not fully working inside the cabin. It has to do with wattage transfer from the front to the rear of the car... similar to landscape lighting using some LED's. So far everyone that has reported back using the 1157 incandescents haven't had an issue since they swapped out the 2357 in favor of the 1157. I think the LED's will also work just fine, but if they happen to cause a side-effect problem just go with the incandescent version and you should be good to go!

I’ve noticed that my driver’s side tail light bulb burns out often, and also gets super hot. Even the plastic socket is cracking now. I see all 2011-2014 Sonatas had this problem. Is it a voltage issue? I’d hate to buy $50 led bulbs and have them go out in a month or two like my regular bulbs do. If you look at other Sonatas while driving, you’ll notice that their taillights are out too. lol Hyundai should issue a recall or permanent fix for this issue.

LEDs don’t draw nearly as much current as an incandescent bulb so there is only a fraction of the heat near the socket. I would replace that cracked socket first. It’s probably not a bad idea to have a reputable shop check it out just to be sure there isn’t something else going on with the wiring. The LEDs in the video are still working fine as far as I know.

Sooo crazy thing is I’m having the same issue and the piece completely melted together!!! After extensive research and research to see if there’s a recall there’s absolutely nothing. Right now I’m waiting on a replacement Tail light harness from Amazon for my 2013 Sonata and I hope this solves my issue. I would suggest looking into this option for you I read somewhere a person was pissed cause a fire had actually started in the car. I’m Soo going to save my receipt from Amazon for this replacement Hyundai needs to take responsibility for this!! This is hazardous!!! Good luck!!

Red for brake lights. If you use a white LED in a brake lamp then it will appear pink.

David, any recommendations on headlight bulbs? Having the same issue with the headlights on the same car.

Unfortunately LED headlight bulbs are not legal for road use in the US and the overwhelming majority are junk anyway. So, I would try an OEM replacement bulb but a long life version. The main thing is to make sure not to touch the bulb glass because the oil from your skin will cause it to burn out early.

I just changed my lights out and can't get the grey bulb socket on the right rear light to seat properly back into the assembly. No matter which way I turn the socket, it won't go into the three grooves properly. I gave up after 30 minutes and was able to jimmy it somewhat tight with only two of the three grooves seated. I don't understand why the left one went in so smoothly, but the right one refuses to go in!

I think I remember that side being difficult on the car in the video also. It must be the way either the socket or light house was made. I remember that I was finally able to get it in but I had to be patient with it. Maybe try getting into the trunk, if you can, so that you’re not trying to plug in the socket at a weird angle.

A burnt out bulb produces a lot of heat during the last period of it’s life just before the filament burned up. In my case, it was the somewhat melted bulb socket and the minor deformation of the hole of the light assembly that made it very hard to get the light socket back into the housing/assembly. I had to completely uninstall the light housing to notice the problem. A little filing of the socket tabs took care of it.

I tried the same bulb on my 2011 Sonata GLS and it wouldn't fit. The little bumps on the silver part of the bulb didn't match up with the groves in the socket :(
