Thank the EPA for that. Also 2007+ diesels also have exhaust filters to filter out any solid particulates. I don't know when, but in America, gasoline engines will soon be equipped with exhaust filters similar to the diesels. They're already in Europe.

I've poured clean water in there just to raise the level. I've done it when the tank level was above half though, and run it down again to about half, then filled up with fuel and def. It's pretty flexible. Mind you, I'm talking about a heavy duty truck, Freighshaker, K-whopper. I've never messed around with a pickup-sized system. Water is the carrier fluid which suspends the urea. The water merely gets evaporated (as does the urea). The urea does its magic to achieve the lowered NOx levels, and the water vapor just blows out the pipe and back to the environment. I don't recommend anyone try filling half the capacity of your DEF system with water, but pouring a gallon into a system that holds 10-15 gallons shouldn't hurt. Thin it out too much and you'll be getting messages and de-rates.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 5 жыл бұрын
There's a sensor inside the tank that will read urea levels so if it's all water, this message will also appear on the dash.

The DEF tank on the LGH and LML Duramax is a 5 gal tank. To complete a regen of the DPF it requires 2 gal of def. the level sensor will register full with only 2 gal in the tank. even though it is truly less than half full. So you really never know that its full until it over flows. Also is does not use a conventional level float. the DEF would eat it away. it uses the Def as a conductor to complete a circuit, giving you the level of the tank. FUN STUFF.

BUT!!!!!!! it’s back again. Reset in July, now it’s March. Traveled about 5k+ miles. Got the 1k warning, filled 2.5g about 200m later. Next day, LOW. Filled 2g to 100% and am getting it reset, again. Not one, not two, but THREE DEF level sensors, on a US built car? Is that for redundancy or are they just trying to make trouble?
@BOBHANNA01
@BOBHANNA01 5 жыл бұрын
You'd think they would switch vendors or demand a revised pump heater, level sensor combo, these all seem to do this and that thanks in such a bad place, just asking to be punctured.

@bigman55434 5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, it will derate, after a certain number of ignition cycles and distance. I had this crap happen at the start of a 275 mile trip on my 2011 Duramax. DEF tank was full. I was down to the last warning that said I would be speed limited on the next restart. The truck didn't get shut off until I got home. Next restart, limp mode to the dealer. Traded that POS in for a gasser. All this emissions crap on diesels is BS.

Just curious, why would a low/no DEF condition impose a vehicle speed restriction / limp mode(?) such that the owner would end up stranded? Is there a mechanical reason or is it just an emissions law?
@superjoe83
@superjoe83 5 жыл бұрын
It is usually a speed restriction, 5 or 10 mph, they do this so you don't just keep driving. Yes it is because of emissions, without DEF the truck may put out too much NOX emissions

One question. What industry is out there that has urea as a waste product? I'd be willing to bet there is one, and that they lobbied for this to be mandated. Same as with the phosphate mining industry and how "fluoride" is now everywhere.

But average person dosent have a $2000 scan tool to reset this feature .so they take it somewhere for repair and bamn!!!!.$100...()..poor engineering. Simple reset button in cab..or upgrade software fix 2 owners for free. Damn they dont build them 2 last or so u can fixem yourself..dont think my $100 reader will do this .. Don't get me wrong if a technician has to work on your vehicle they should be paid for their time period ...gm's revolving door ...

Diagnostic equipment must be really cheap and good availability in the US , here in the UK, stuff costs a packet , dealers charge £80-150 for a diagnostic check , a proper tech 2 scanner costs about £2500 , snap on scanner average £3000 plus £800 per year updates , us small garages charge about £35 for a scan and about £35 per hour to repair , Joe public thinks we are all loaded , what they don't see is all the bills we have to pay before we walk out of our front doors at home , my costs are about £500 per week , what's it like in the US ?

For the DEF haters, I remember being at the Los Angeles airport back in the early 1970's it was afternoon and you could not see the sun due to the pollution. We've added 100 million more to the country since then. We've all seen the pollution in China. DEF is one of the ways to deal with an air quality problem. More people on the planet means more rules if we expect a decent quality of life.
@stephanieluigon5192
@stephanieluigon5192 5 жыл бұрын
That simply sounds like another excellent reason not to visit Los Angeles. I don't live in Los Angeles, and I can see the sun just fine, unless it is cloudy. Then I can't see the sun. But, alas, with the threat of climate change so real, perhaps it would be better if we did not see the sun so often. Additionally, since diesel pickup trucks were not really all that common in the 1970's, I don't see where making them more complex in the 21st Century solves the problem you reference. Still, those guys in Washington, DC are really smart, and I am certain they have thought of all this. They did a great job of making 50 cent light bulbs into 3 dollar light bulbs, and toilets you used to flush once into toilets you have to flush twice so we can "save" water. Excuse me, I have to go start my 2 cycle chain saw and cut some firewood for my wood stove. The wood stove supplements my oil fired furnace (no DEF required). My gas pickup (no DEF required) is warming up so I don't freeze on the way to the lot where I cut firewood. Boy, I hope those 100 million extra folks are driving electric cars.

My wife rented a VW diesel to drive up north and back. The agency failed to top off the def fluid. Half way back she called me with that shutdown warning. I had never heard of this but learned quickly. I thought she was going to have to go to the AutoZone and get some to get home. Luckily she just made it back OK.
