Let's get 2023 started with another Diesel EMISSIONS problem.
This clean 2013 Chevy Duramax truck is derated to 4 MPH because the ECM is not happy with the DEF Quality.
Shop already replaced the failing NOx sensors and filled the DEF tank with fresh fluid. They ran the Service REGEN and the Fluid Quality Test which FAILED!
Let's fire up the Tech2Win and see why this beast is sick and what it takes to restore the DIESEL POWER :)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Ivan

Government doesn't realize that the forced emissions requirements do not improve emissions if parts for these engines have to be manufactured, parts have to be shipped, mechanics have work on these trucks, and old parts are recycled or thrown away. We need to take a more broad view of emissions and carbon output over a lifetime of a vehicle not just the immediate end result. Ev's are a prime example for unaccounted emissions and carbon. Yes the vehicle is very efficient but the building and recycling are many times worse than the ICE vehicles

@Kerry Lewis, I've never owned a diesel but the majority of my negative experiences with gasoline vehicles has been the emissions systems. A family member launched the "parts cannon" at one of his vehicles trying to fix the repeat codes. On another vehicle which was nearly 20 yrs old, I had to replace a long section of pipe with the integrated CAT and an O2 sensor "fused" to the pipe yet the replacement had the wrong angle at the socket & flange. I had to cut it and use the factory socket & flange so it'd finally line up and seal properly... 😑 On another vehicle it seems like every other week to a month I would get, "check gas cap, small leak, large leak, catalyst inefficiency, incorrect purge..." etc., yet after resetting the MIL a few times, suddenly no issues or codes have set for months & vehicle passed emissions testing with no problems. 🤔 It's absolute nonsense just how much of a headache and how much wasted $$$ has gone into repairing "emissions components" on modern vehicles compared to other components. And yet now they want to "GET RID OF ALL GAS/DIESEL ENGINE VEHICLES & GO ALL-ELECTRIC!!!" whilst all-electrics are still largely charging from sources utilizing fossil fuels which then is contrary to the very reason that the vehicles exist and then they have their own set of other problems.

I knew that. I also know when these systems came out (I think it was 2008, at least on Ford) the vehicle could go to regeneration while idling. I think there was a reflash done so the vehicle had to be moving at least 20 mph before regeneration occurred.

The emission control systems for diesel engines have become so complex (and picky) that one wonders if it's worth to have a diesel vehicle these days - complex troubleshooting and lack of parts make for expensive repairs and significant down times. I posted online and a gentleman told me the fan clutch circuit under the hood was damaged and the body control module was holding out the starter circuit. Well, what kind of crazy crap is this.....I pulled the fan shroud off, the plastic conduit carrying the wires to the clutch had failed, dropped into the fan and got chopped up. Well, there's your problem, lady! You also need a special tool to remove that fan clutch. I have had EVERY problem you can have with a truck.

The phrase that will shake out is going to be "carbon neutral" in the end. The ICE is not going anywhere. Electric cannot sustain the rigors being asked of it. The average driver segment electric may be just fine but the sport job/work segment needs the ICE for as long as there is fuel. Strides are being made to utilize carbon captured from the air to make gasoline. Putting the cart before the horse by satiating the production greenies and not having solved the charging availability is making for less than stellar reasons to want to go electric. Social media is proving to be its own worst enemy.

Had a 2016 Ford with the 6.7. Had the DEF heater go out under warranty with a 3 month wait for parts, then had 2 of the 4 EGT sensors go bad. After dealing with that and coming up on 100K miles, traded in for a gasoline truck. Now looking for a pre-2007 diesel to buy but around here (TX) they command a hefty premium. At least the body and frames last here and will just have to refresh the mechanical parts.

Fortunately our cars are old enough that basic tools are usually enough. Ivan's methodical checking voltages, grounds, loose wires etc. still applies. Gives me confidence to keep after those illusive issues - have a plan, use logic, keep looking and sooner or later you'll find the problem. And with some proper tools, manual dexterity, and patience - fix it!

Great work Ivan! I deal with the same issues on semis every day. The older systems that used the nox sensors to check the def quality were such a pain to get the derate to clear at least on the HD side. These new systems are pretty tech friendly. We have a sensor in the def tank that checks the quality of the def ultrasonically and the nox sensors are only there now to check the base engine nox output for issues/egr flow control and check the nox conversion efficiency across the scr catalyst. The only thing I wish the manufacturers would do is get rid of EGR since all it is there for is to lower nox emissions, and control all of the nox with the scr system since it has advanced so much in the past several years.

I had a similar issue on my L5P with bad catalyst being the code. Resetting NOX sensors still lead to showing sensors as faulty as values jumped wildly and stuck high or low. This did not seem to affect seed limiting, but DPF reges dropped really low. While the NOX sensors were on backorder the DEF heater #2 in the DEF tank went bad. This did cause the speed redution warnings to start. Researching the codes present also led me to replace the DEF control module in addition to the tank as dealers had done that in addition to tanks for other's warranty repairs. After running the fluid quality test and resetting the NOX sensors again the NOX/SCR system started working fine again without replacing the NOX sensors themselves. I'm using the AutoEnginuity scanner. My truck did have one replaced battery and a corroded ground cable on that battery. I assume the previous battery had an event due to the corrosion and rust on the battery tray. I also had to reprogram the Glowplug module as it seems a low battery event can hose certain modules and you'lll need SPS2 to reprogram them. I had the truck 6+ months before the DEF/SCR issues so I dont think the module went bad from the suspected battery event.

Wow that shop got lucky winging an SCR at it without finishing diagnosis. Really should have tested the truck with the new NOx sensors in and DEF injector unhooked to verify sensors correlate with each other as well as making sure the DEF pump is able to maintain pressure during an injection cycle, a weak pump will cause this as well as a faulty new NOx sensor. Also I never say a DEF injector is good without testing it both cold and up to temp, they can do some crazy things when they get hot though it usually errs on the side of an internal leak which causes a reduction too high issue. They also should dig into the glow plug code (I'm sure it's the glow plug itself) so the truck can regenerate normally. If it is repeatedly attempting regens and aborting due to a fault it will bake that replacement SCR into oblivion in no time.

@@kevin9c1 yessir, they're also programmed to abort regens for all kinds of other reasons. Mine did the same thing. Seems the guy working on it said these trucks, have firmware programming that once they pass the dpf inspection mileage recommendation threshold of 150 thousand miles, if a message for low def fluid comes up, the program makes it go into the limp mode countdown. If you get it into a dealer before it gets into shut down mode, it can be cleared by forcing a def cleaning cycle, which will cost you a couple hundred bucks. If you wait too long, a bit of reprogramming is require😮d.

I was outside and talking with the owner, he said it uses about 1 quart of oil between 800-1000 miles but seems Hyundai considers that normal but it's also contaminating the CAT so the owner is in a tough situation, the rep also told him if he gets an aftermarket one installed that will void any extended warranty he has. I never heard of a CT going bad in 8 months and NOT being covered especially with what the manufacturer considers 'normal' oil consumption. I did my 1st oil change at 2500 miles and then at 7500, didnt use a drop within the 5000 miles

I watched the video but did understand what the cause if the limp mode was? All I saw you do was the Def fluid test and then the truck seemed to work? What was the the cause???

It’s crazy the PCM/ECU disables the vehicle over a DEF fluid issue.

Would really like to know the purpose of limp mode in the first place; why not just a MIL for if NOx doesn’t drop between sensor 1-2 when commanding injection of DEF?

These clean diesels are repair nightmares after the warranty runs out. How were they able to buy a used exhaust system? The EPA prohibits the sale of used converters.

Since the EPA wants people to only buy converters brand new and there is a backorder. people need to send the EPA rental car bills while waiting on "new" parts and see how quickly something would be done...

Ivan,, Partial success???? Ivan why didn't you go to the next step and diagnose the glow plug issue?? It must be due to the owner's wishes. Would have liked to have viewed the total fix.. Great job as always. Time consuming, but worth it.....Thank you.....Pete

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics What's your thoughts on the glow plug fault being the possible cause of the clogged catalyst? i.e not being allowed to regen because of engine light. Seems plausible to me.

To all the people thinking the glow plug is the issue or needs fixed right now, the glow plugs will seize in the head and require head replacement. It's a direct inject engine and doesn't need the glow plugs unless it's a cold start. Trying to change the glow plug can open a can of worms the customer was not wanting.

I was under the impression that if the check engine light is on, it cannot or will not complete a Regen cycle. If that's the case, the new DPF will clog as well. However, maybe it's only if the light is on for certain reasons that it won't Regen or maybe that is only 2017 and newer I'm thinking of?

I learned the DEF is hygroscopic so you have to fill the DEF tank to the brim every time you fil up the diesel tank. Use good quality DEF.

I've got a 14 2500hd in the shop with a def quality message and is limited to 55 mph. It had a code for a upstream NOX sensor so I replaced with a dealer part. It will do a service regen just fine but it will fail a fluid quality test. Will do the regen part of the test but reports the test was aborted and won't pass.

OK, even with new emission system (15K): SCR,DOC, DPF, nox sensors, and good used DEF injector.......The "regen should be done regardless to complete the RFQT. The other scanners.........snapon and thinktool should be able to complete the clearing codes of emission sensor. I'm just saying that the tech2win software with interface is a good choice; yet, by following the technical service bulletin to the letter, the other scanners should be able to complete the clear emission DIC and DEF light.
