2011-2022 Ford F150 J&L 3.0 Oil Separator Review & Install

Heavy use can cause a great deal of oil to vent through the crankcase vent. Your engine’s PCV system feeds this waste oil back into the intake system for burning in the cylinders. However, the oil can dilute fuel and lower octane. The J&L V3.0 Black Oil Separator catches the oil fumes from the crankcase vent, storing them for occasional safe disposal. The oil separator keeps your fuel pure, ensuring maximum performance in your F-150.
Version 3.0. J&L improved on the designed of its old Oil Separator with the introduction of the new and improved Version 3.0. The first big change you will notice is that the Version 3.0 Separator has a larger 3 oz. capacity, that is almost double that of its previous model. Another important difference is the filter media. Older J&L Separators used a Ford Motorcraft pre-filter, but now J&L uses a 1/2" thick 1/16th" aluminum honeycomb filter with a mesh stainless steel screen to trap even more fine oil vapors than before. That helps prevent them from gumming up your engine.

What about the harness being attached? I would most likely fastened it down with a zip tie to prevent vibration wear on the lines. ???

Great video. I installed on my 2017 f150 3.5 eco last week. Drove 400kms and check today and there’s no oil in the cc canister. Is this normal?

Yes it is. We recommend checking it again around 1600kms to see how frequently you'll need to service it.

Just ordered this separator/catch can along with the extension for the 2017 3.5L EB F150 I bought last Friday. Is there any difference when mounting the can with the extension? It looks like it sits pretty high up, could just be the camera angle.

Did they update the hoses? Pretty sure previous generations of this J&L separator were not built to contain oil/gas smells and eventually emitted smells that can leak into cabin

Hi Jon, You are correct some owners of those JLT can's would experience that on some models in rather cold climates. I imagine this is due to the cold start enrichment being rather aggressive on these vehicles when the weather is below 40 degrees. You notice in the winter months the contaminates in the oil separator collected have a much stronger fuel smell than in the summer months. We changed the style of hose used on the EcoBoost applications specifically in Oct 2021 with good feedback thus far. Hope this helps!

The JLT oil separators were rebranded in November of 2021 to J&L Oil Separator Co. Same product, pricing is the same also.

I watched a different video that recommended installing check valves on both hoses. Is that a good idea or unnecessary? Installed my catch can today. Took me significantly longer due to my physical limitations but it's Installed and everything's running just fine. I mounted mine further back on the battery tray near the corner to make space for the canister extension. Curious to see how much sludge will accumulate over time. It's my first mod after buying the truck.

Will this void the factory warranty on a 200 F 150 w 5.0?

Hi Steve, If you read the fine print on any warranty contract you will find a lot of reasons your warranty can become void; installing aftermarket parts can be one of them. However, per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act proof would have to be provided that the after-market part caused the failure. If you need further clarification, contact your vehicles service department. Some are easier to deal with than others. The good news is the oil separator is very easy to remove if needed, so if you were worried about warranty coverage...keep your stock line you remove and just reinstall it when taking the truck in for service.
