I had a mk6 TDi about 10 years ago it was the most solid over engineered car ever unlike current VWs

It’s interesting reading such thoughts. These days why do cars need to be made to last? Few people now own new cars - they Lease. In 3-4 years they have another new Leased car, the relatively low mileage well looked after ex-lease car is then on the used market sold through large ‘car supermarket’ type centres. Again, through finance with their own stipulations - but a good warranty too. After this buyer moves on the car might only be 7 years old. So long as a manufacture makes a vehicle to last 10 years that is all many people would ever car for. Sad, because increasingly cars are seen as items to use and replace regardless of age much like mobiles - perfectly okay, but you’re offered an upgrade so you go for it.

Mk6 such a solid car. I had a golf 2.5 and was shocked how fun it was. After driving a mk7 gti and r I chose the mk6 r for my current ride.

These are pretty rare these days (unlike the mk7) . I have the gtd mk6. Hardly rare but it’s nice to not see many of them around too. It’s an absolute rocket with a remap and I still get 60mpg 🤗 Just found this channel, nice review man

One of my favourite golfs of all time right there. The MK6-R...So underrated, and oddly there seemed to be not many on the roads, either at the time...or these days, and they're still so modern-looking...and blend right in with the MK'7's & Audi's & A-Class's....

vw only made a few hundred of these plus back then they cost almost 40k which is a rip off and finance wasnt much of an option like it is nowadays, thats probably why so rare

I own a Mark 7 Golf R Dsg and love the thing to bits but they are not the rarest of cars on the roads, and I must confess that when I see a Mark 6 R it a real head turner moment for me as they are such rare cars on the road nowadays. I have only seen 5 of them in the 5 years I have had my R and they all looked beautifully maintained and had such road presence. They are brilliant cars and I don't understand why they didn't sell more of them but the mark 5 R32 was a tough act to follow.

I really like the color, never seen one in this color. These are already quite rare in the Netherlands because of the extra tax which makes these kinds of cars very expensive when they were new..

Ive got an immaculate white 2011, 3 door with DSG & almost 48,000kms on it. Ive had it just over 12 months now & love it. I left it original until recently as it was more than capable however a moderate Racing Lines Stage 1 tune & DSG tune has just taken it to another level. The car is just good at everything it does. Being produced in Germany the build quality is high & the car feels super solid. I have no idea how many were imported to Australia but as of today on Carsales (our Largest Online Car Market) there is not one 3 door for sale and its rarity for me makes it all the more appealing. I like the R32 but think VW lost something in the models that followed the Mk6 when they did away with the 3 door R. For my eye the designers got it right here. So smooth & refined I think its easily the best looking R. I couldn't be happier as Im sure you can tell & that car will be staying with me for a long time to come. Thank You for the video Matt. That Graphite Blue is beautiful.

Back in 2011 this would have been a subtle, classy Q car. Fast forward to 2021 though and hot Golfs seem to be the weapon of choice for crims, scallies and generally pushy people. If you watch Police, Camera, Interceptors there’s always a Golf ‘making off’ and ‘decamping’.

In the states the golf is for young men who have a fetish for Europe and put fake european plates on it. But seriously its probaly the least seen VW product I can think of. If you go VW here you get their crossovers now. If you want a economical hatch you get a Asian brand because I do believe the golf is made in Mexico and it's just not cool or worth it compared to the competition. (In terms of general public views from what I can tell) I don't think VW bothered to give us the current gen Golf from Europe. Because it sales so poorly.

The Mk6 GTI introduced the second generation EA888 engine but it slightly curious that they went with earlier MkV engine for the this and the edition 35 versions.

A friend of mine has a Golf tdi 2018 with about 180bhp and it goes like stink! The torque in that thing is incredible. Just don't get a DSG lol.

I have the mk6GTi edition 35, it has the same engine block as this car, but ‘only’ 235 HP. Apparently more bullet proof than the std GTi which had chain driven cams. An old engine and thirsty but very tuneable. On The 18’’ wheels on the Ed 35 the ride is VERY firm so the 19’s on the R must be teeth rattling. Apparently not according to the reviewer, piped in noise I assume as the lower model I have has fake engine noise. Usually 10L/100kms around town so thirsty enough. Electronic front diff keeps the front wheels under control on the fwd edition 35. Same platform as mk5 I think and sadly some cost cutting on the mk6

Such a shame VW had to stop throwing exciting engines in their Golfs. I'm still considering importing a 5 cylinder Golf 6, to celebrate the last Golf that sounded cool. ..on the Golf 6 R: It's a "fuck soul, i'm efficient" car, and for that reason i would have it with the DSG. That engine and that gearbox suit each other, imho. The colour on this one is well chosen. Looks gorgeous. The Golf 6 is overall a very cool car, imho. Well built, good looking.

Understated is great as one does not want to actually look like an ageing boy racer or attract the attention of a jam sandwich, even worse the damn clandestine cars they use today. Not so keen on the 6 speed box, would have an aching left arm and leg these days on a country road. Partaking in the traffic light GP finished years ago, still like a few effective horses under the right foot though.

That was the era when the DSG had a fairly high failure rate, but some were lucky apparently

@@jashugg it was prevention before anything happens tbh. It's running 400bhp now but waiting to fully forge and big turbo to push over 500bhp. At 400 it was slipping a bit, I got the clamping pressures upped but made not a lot of difference so in anticipation of the big build and to save damage I went with the Mk7R set up. But up until I started tuning it was at 90k and ran fine. I've read horror stories about the DSG tho, 🤞🏼 I've prevented any damage

The electric revolution - yes, apparently I will always need to have a 2nd car - and an old one at that, since I prefer a stick shift + an executive class 4dr. True M5 out of price point and always will be, so pre 2015 - translation; never sell my 2010 535 M sport 6 spd.

The R actually dates back to 1989 when VW built the original MK2 Rallye golf, the boxed Arch, 4 wheel drive supercharged Golf, at the VW Motorsport plant in Brussels, 5000 cars built to qualify it for homologation for motorsport, all left hand drive and sold in the UK and Europe The R used on modern day cars is from this history

My 22 year old TT is much nicer and still a performance bargain as their still changing hands for around 2k ! I paid £1500 for mine and have enjoyed five years of immense fun on a tiny budget.

You’re mistaking it for a MK6 GTI with the EA888 engine, which consume a lot of oil and have temperamental timing chains. These run the stronger CDL block and are very reliable.
