The wire and 2x4 was a nice touch. I’ll implement that on my Highlander install.

Pretty common with Toyota apparently. I have a similar issue with my 2007 Rav4 in which there is some clunk in the steering column during operation. Seems to get better if lubed however.

Mine broke at around 60,000 miles on my Camry hybrid. Replaced with a new one but The knocking went away but it’s still kind of stiff

I’ve seen others say that it could be an electrical option. Any advice on that?

if you do not have any warning on your instrument panel, it is most likely only this shaft. A Toyota dealer service manager told me this today. and he has said they've done a lot of them and they keep them in a drawer, they are done that often. I have a 2018 Camry LE with 70,000mi on it and the steering became stiff/resistive. He explained the replacement part from toyota was redesigned and should last.
