The Mito isn't a Fiesta. It isn't a Abarth. What is the Alfa Romeo Mito? Style and maybe a turbo.

I did not retain anything Mr. Regular said from about 1:58 to 2:48 because I was too distracted by the struggle to get the cover off. That was a captivating, hard-fought battle.

+RegularCars It means that she's not willing to accept or love that slant six for what it is. Oh don't get me wrong, she likes the idea, that's the attraction, but at the end of it all, she, deep down, wants the emotional response of a 302. She wants the comfort and security of better brakes. So she'll first try to shove those improvements into you, then she'll constantly nit pick wanting to know things: "What's your coolant temperature right now?" "How much torque are you making at the wheel?" "Why is your alignment out, just drive straight!" "Why do you have to idle so high?" After about a year or more, she'll realize that it was a great run but it's too emotionally exhausting. Next thing you know she's with a younger, chiseled MR2 AW11 Mk1b she's had a crush on since high school. He's fun, exciting, more reliable, communicates his emotions better and he's little dangerous (okay, he kills people occasionally), that's the attraction.

I have to agree, apart from too much body roll it's an excellent car. Interior quality could be better, a lot better. It's well built it just doesn't feel or look great. This is because Fiat kept Alfa on a tight leash. It literally is a Fiat with Alfa tuning for the suspension and such. It handles well and does not at all struggle keeping up with much higher powered cars because it is so light. I own a White Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4TB Cloverleaf/Quadrifoglio Verde so I do know what I am saying, I've had it for just over a year and I do enjoy it.

In 2010 Alfa Romeo didn't know which direction to Go, Then Ferrari decided to make it Great again, like the old days when Enzo was just an employee & not the competition, so 600 Ferrari engineers took 3 years to make the Guilia and the Stelvio SUV and a new (Maserati) V8 GTV on the way too, People have unrealistic expectations of AR, they want 90% of a Ferrari for 10% of the price, with the MITO you get a sniff of Greatness 8C tail lights, it's a nice commuter its NOT a race car.....................get some perspective.....

Not exactly how the multi air works. The cam lifter and the valve actuator are directly hydraulically connected with a solenoid in between that can block the flow of fluid or not to alter the valve timing and duration. It's actually a fairly simple system and doesn't require the massive high pressure and ultra precision parts of the freevalve tech.

@af5253

The base Mito made 76hp, not 69. Spec for spec, it was less than £1000 more expensive than the equivalent Punto.
@SamNeedham123
@SamNeedham123 7 жыл бұрын
The 1.3l Diesels are horrendous powerplants. The amount of turbo lag that's in them is ridiculous - meaning you've gotta constantly rev it as much as possible to get any performance from it. At least that's what it's like with my Mum's Punto diesel. To top it off, her's is an automatic, but you have to use it in manual mode in order to make any sort of progress.
@cheesyeurotrance95
@cheesyeurotrance95 7 жыл бұрын
Bullshit. The 90/95 hp version of the 1.3 diesel is indeed horribly laggy, but the 70/75 hp isn't. I have a 2005 Punto 1.3 JTDm with the 70hp version of the engine and a manual 5-speed box, pulls just fine from 1700 rpm and returns 50+ mpg in city, never had any problems with it either. The weaker version comes with a simpler fixed geometry turbo, whereas the more powerful one has a variable geometry turbo that is much more complicated and expensive to replace, the more powerful version also has DPF and DMF while the weaker 70hp version has neither.

Eliminating the throttle body greatly reduces pumping losses (which increases fuel economy), that's the primary benefit. No need to have the system on the exhaust valves as well if that's the only goal
@ArmandoVictorForno
@ArmandoVictorForno 3 жыл бұрын
I actually think that the multiair system is quite interesting, since it allows you to control many aspects of the valve operation with a "simple" solution: if you think about it, this system allows for many strategies to shape the valve actuation profile according to demand (i.e. late intake valve opening, early intake valve closing etc..) with a system that (at least theoretically) is quite simple, if compared to other technologies.
@smagbye
@smagbye 7 жыл бұрын
There is a butterfly valve in the throttle body. The MultiAir system only works when using part throttle. The hydraulic system locks open for wide open throttle operation and the intake lobe on the cam takes over.

Multinair is rather good IMO, yes still uses the cam for timing but way more range when it comes to lift and variable timing control. Eliminating the throttle entirely is a good thing because that reduces pumping losses. Automakers are very conservative (not Koenigsegg mind you), so this halfway house of mechanical and hydraulic valve control was probably a safer option than free-valve type affair and remember multi air is quite old these days. So too is the MiTo, hence port fuelling as they arrived in that PFI - DI crossover period. PFI is a blessing imo, no issues of carbon build up caking the intake valves (which I guess is even more important on this engine than usual) and from what I have researched, particulate emissions from DI are actually worse than from PFI.

These UK reviews are so boring compared to the "classic" RC reviews. I guess that come with not knowing where the car places within society because (a) Mr. Regular isn't from that part of the world so he can't understand how society views the car, (b) not knowing the culture context and significance of these cars in comparison to other cars in its market, and (c) the chatroulette style review at a private road with all of its physical constraints. Oh, and not enough "noises."

That was the worst and most inaccurate description of the Multiair system... There is no inlet cam - just an exhaust one that also has one lobe for each cylinder to activate the inlet hydraulic solenoids - four, not eight. And it all runs on the engine oil, not separate. It works well, and is reliable if the oil is not let get dirty. It is sensitive to skipping oil changes.

There is no intake camshaft at all. The exhaust cam has one lobe per cylinder that creates the hydraulic pressure needed to operate the intake valves. The intake valves are opened by oil pressure effectively.

If you cruise at 100 kph or more and you change from normal to dynamic mode you feel a huge boost of power. So what you said about dna is not true. Dynamic does make that car uses 100% of its torque throughout the rpm change. Also this is not supposed to compete with the Abarth or the st. There is a quadrifoglio version that is more powerful. Lastly the thing that made me buy this car as a first car was that it was the only small hatch that had enough space for me to sit in without having to put the driver seat all the way back and that the clutch was very easy to operate. Other than that 10/10 review I just wish you had experimented with dna a bit more.

You're trying to understand Alfa. There's your problem. Way back they collaborated with Nissan to make one of the worst cars ever. When they unveiled the idea, the competition shat their pants. "Oh shit, bomb proof Nissan technology with Amazing Alfa styling and drivability." And then they did it the wrong way around by using the most boring Nissan body they could, and assembling the electronics, engine, etc. in southern Italy at a time when you shouldn't have given them anything more complicated than a tractor. The result was a car that looked bad, and broke down more often than an experimental jazz song, so the competition could breathe a sigh of relief. What I'm saying is fuck the Arna.

No. It does not use any "special oil" for operating the intake valves. It uses the same motor oil that circulates everywhere else in the engine. There are 4 hydraulic pumps operated by the camshaft that also operates the exhaust valves. Computer controlled solenoid valves adjust how much and when the 8 hydraulically operated intake valves open.

As an owner of a mito 120hp, what can I say? Well compared to other cars back when I bought it (sub £3.5K budget inc insurance or £1500-2000 depending on insurance group so Suzuki swifts, minis with 100K+ miles, clios etc.), it was by far the best choice. Has an interior that isn’t straight out of a bargain bin, has an engine that actually pulls when it’s loaded (glares at the mini, fine when it’s only one or two people but when it’s loaded, the engine struggles big time), steering that is although very light is still decently sharp, has over 100hp and is in a low enough insurance group that I can afford it. Granted, wouldn’t have bought one new as it is a tad overpriced but for what I paid for mine, cannot complain at all.

I'm considering a MiTo, as I'm in a similar situation I still would rather have a 100hp 1.4 Polo/Ibiza (2002-2008 models) but I found this really nice 1.4 95hp MiTo for a decent price, it's also cheaper to insure than the VAG cars I mentioned above so it's really tempting

The main problems about this Fiat Punto in disguise are the 6-speed gearboxes shattering into a bilion pieces after you've driven it for more than one mile at a time, and the turbocharger nuking itself as soon as you hit boost. All in all, they're just FWD econoboxes made for youngsters trying to be cool but in reality they're just afraid of coming out the closet, who then cry when a BMW 216d Active Tourer beats them in every way possible.

Mr Regular, the MiTo is indeed not impressive, but it was/is the remnant of "cheap" or mediocre Alfas. If you don't get Alfas, don't do a review on them. The MiTo is not even al Alfa per-se... A more appropriate review for your otherwise fine program would have been on the 147 GTA, a true WV-eating monster, one that even Jezza himself praised. Or the gorgeous 159. Or the Brera. Or the GTV. For fuck's sake... of all the Alfas you could have driven in the UK... the MiTo? Sorry for the rant, love your channel. Cheers mate

Mito is now 9 years old, it's ancient, it is a dressed up Fiat Punto (which is older), nothing more. I think this car is a 2012, actually surprised they still make these things. A facelift version came out last year and they have a newer 1.4TB Multi-air engine that produces 170hp and 184lb ft.

Honestly Alfa Romeo is the automotive car company I like the least out of car companies that everyone is supposed to like (obviously not counting unpopular brands like Daewoo, AMC, etc.). For every high end car they have made, one of the competitors (Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, etc.) have made a comparable car that I like significantly more. Maybe it's because I'm an American, idk...

@herranton
@herranton 7 жыл бұрын
Matriox 688 Ok, I don't actually know how the intake system works, but I can translate what he said (I don't know if he is factual or not). (this also assumes you know how a camshaft works) Essentially, the intake cam presses a switch not the valve itself. When the switch is pressed by the cam, a computer tells an entirely different mechanical system to push in the valve. That system uses some sort of pressurized oil to do the pushing. The point is that the cam is redundant. You could, in theory, use the crank angle sensor or some other means to know when the valve should be pushed in (just like in the FreeValve by koëōnnneësssieïeeggg that Mr. regular mentioned). It is simple complexity for the sake of complexity. It adds no value to the engine. if the cam is there, just use it... if you want to use some sort of camless valve system, take out the stupid cam. (edited to add more vowels)
@0tispunkm3y3r
@0tispunkm3y3r 7 жыл бұрын
Matriox 688 I think an intake cam rolls round as per usual, but the rockers/pushers/whatever act not on the valve but on a little hydraulic sac which is connected to the valve. So you get some mechanical base timing from the cam (likely the cam has a very long on-time), but solenoids in the little oil sacs then control when and how much work the rocker does on the oil and in turn on the valve....so they can electronically delay lift and vary the lift over a wider band than just having a variable cam setup. So much so they can eliminate the throttle valve and simply vary the intake port closing to throttle the engine. That last part isn't anew concept, I think it's how miller cycle engines work.....my 2006 Honda 1.8 has a VTEC system but rather than normal and aggressive cams like in a type R, it has an economy cam and a normal cam. The economy cam works by keeping the intake valve open longer (late inlet valve closing) and in doing so the piston actually pushes air-fuel mixture back out into the manifold and so in this way they can achieve some throttling and means that the actual throttle valve is held wider open, reducing pumping loss. Running an engine with late intake valve closing though normally kills off torque and leaves the engine feeling a bit anaemic. Ok for a Prius as you have a motor to fill in, but on my Honda they switch the cams back to normal when your throttle input reaches 50% or RPM hits 3500. I.e. The economy cam is really just for steady cruising on the highway.
