Don't disagree that a different frame would be great and I get that question/comment frequently. Unfortunately cant get a new one for Chevys as far as I know, and finding a used one around here that wont need the same work would be nearly impossible. Might find one in a junkyard that has been totaled early in its life, but then if its totaled early in its life good chance the frame probably got hit as well. My 99 Silverado broke the frame on both sides just in front of the rear spring hangers. There are holes about 1" diameter on the bottom and top rails of the C channel and an oval hole on the side about 1/2" × 1" between them. Seems like a weak area with a lot of load from the spring going over bumps. Then add in corrosion from the calcium chloride crap they use on the roads now which seems to corrode ferrous metals worse than the sodium chloride they used to use. 5 year old trucks get written off due to the frames rusting out.

Have had a similar problem with a 99 Jeep Wrangler, seems as if they are famous for the frame rust issues on the rear control arm area, there are kits out there for them to fix this issue. Took me a while but fabricated replacement parts to do the job. If you have some way of getting the vehicle off the ground, remove the tank, rear axle and put on your fabrication hat and go to work.
Between the lifter issue's and frame issue 's GM should be held accountable for this stuff. This truck needs a new frame. And I'm distraught over a rotted upper rear shock mount. God only knows what else I find? 07 sierra 1500 w/103,500 miles.

It is not GM's fault, that truck has been driving through all that salt they dump on the roads up north to melt snow for a decade. I have seen a few of them like that here in the south but it is usually someone who drives their 4x4 truck on the beach at the outer banks of North Carolina. When I was a teen back in the 80s I very stupidly bought a 1979 Jeep Wagoneer that had a fishing rod rack on the front of it. when I saw that fishing pole rack I should have run because that thing run on the beach and was a bucket of rust. lol

@rakohus Жыл бұрын
@@trevorn9381 It absolutely is GM's fault. The design of the frames makes it so that even if you take it and wash your undercarriage, you can't get a lot of the salt/dirt out because of the frame design. For instance, to "properly" clean the bed you're supposed to remove the rear tail lights and wash through a channel there. There are possibly 1/500 people that know that. It's not an intuitive design and so these frames get rust cancer on the inside. By the time most people can see the effects of it on the exterior of the frame, it's too late.

Difficult question, one that on Jeeps which we do a lot more of than trucks I can more easily answer. The way they rust, trucks vs Jeeps, is a bit different, if this one had really bad rust through on 3 sides of the frame like Jeeps often do I'd be concerned. The structure is also very different, in severe instances Jeeps can have the frame chopped off and re tubed. These trucks with their larger frames would not work to try to do that. Thing is the current direction of the automotive world I see more and more people trying to save vehicles. This truck I would say was on the edge of should it be fixed. Most of them I see or sell kits for only need one or two of these kits I used.

It's strange to me that the drivers side is generally much worse. At first it might make sense because it's going to get more spray from oncoming traffic, but there should be just as much retained salt and junk on the the other side and besides, most of the spray should actually be coming from the front wheels. Considering that this has been a problem for 20 years, GM should be the subject of a class action lawsuit representing probably half the male population in the US. I can't understand how they get away with it.
@TabooCustoms Жыл бұрын
A lot of it comes down to when they started boxing frames that instead of using C channel style. Since the box is stronger they went to lighter materials, and along with that it is very difficult to get good paint coverage inside of the boxes. Even when you look at processes like ecoat, it is limited inside of a box based on the size of holes in the frames and the amount of power put into the system. At one of my former employers I did a test with square tube, we ecoated a square tube then cut it in half and measured how far in we got full ecoat thickness. We found that in our system we only got full thickness to a depth 1.5X the size of our opening after that it tapered off to nothing.

My opinion is its a combination of factors. Going from open C channel frames to boxed frames, frame material getting thinner when they did that, lack of maintenance, poor coating performance, multipiece frame rail designs, all the salt used on the roads, etc.

They rust from the inside out so under coating is useless

Yes gm trucks rust. More than they should and faster than they should. But jesus christ people - if you live in a salt area youve gotta do undercarriage washes and fluid film/woolwax/etc your undercarriage. Its not hard or expensive, and you’ll avoid these giant disasters.

How are all those hole that let in that grass and dirt and salt, not the biggest law suit to have ever existed. Anyone buying a truch should get every hole plugged before driving it anywhere.

Literally salt caked onto the frame. Owner negligence.

@@jkemmerer1993 I think the reason some trucks have frame problems is because they were never under coated. The body on my truck was all rotted out, but the frame was still good it was under coated every year.

This is why i will never own a gm truck. They have had rust problems for a long time. This truck was not even 10yrs old when this was published and already it was ready for the scrap yard if not for spending thousands of dollars paying a shop to fix it. GM should have pulled a Toyota and replaced all the frames with a quality coating over quality steel. None of my fords did this ev3n at 15 years in NY. Fact is this truck was probably 5-6 years old when those bigger holes started. Totally unaceptable for such an expencive piece of equipment

Absolute trash. GM has really gown down hill. This truck is 10 years old and shouldnt be unsafe for the road. This is something you see on 20 and 30 year old vehlces. I see 2016 and 17 Chevy truck bodys rotting through already around where i live. They will rot before they are even paid off.
