Replace the fuel pump, cut out and replace the crossmember, then hit the chassis with a wire brush grinder disk, then paint with POR 15 paint. It will stop the rust cold.

I usually do most of my own repairs...but recently I tried a local small shop to replace some tie rods on one of my vehicles because I'm looking for a mechanic I can trust. I'm also looking for someone to take a vehicle for a pre-purchase inspection the next time I buy a vehicle. I could've replaced the tie rods myself...but it was worth the money to find a good mechanic.

I always find it amazing that people who live in the snow belt are afraid to crawl under a vehicle and look at it before buying. You don't have to be car smart to see that truck has a problem. Fresh undercoat should raise alarm bells also.

The amount of post-purchase inspections I've done at my shop massively outnumbers pre-purchase inspections...but the pre-purchase inspections are so much more satisfying for me and my customers....saving them from headaches is always the more important thing. That said...the post-purchase inspections can be serious heartbreakers after someone bought the thing

A couple of years ago, I had a vehicle just as bad. We looked around and in time found a donor frame. I put the donor frame on stands in the garage. It took the winter but, with help, we were able to swap the old onto the new. It was a lot of work and took time but was totally doable. I had the time and a shop big enough and friends to call on for help. In the end I sold with a small profit.

Repairs to that truck will probably be a lot more money than what the customer paid for it. The best option will probably be to buy another truck with a good frame but a blown engine and a cab in bad shape, transfer the good parts to the good frame but this will also be an expensive option.

Years ago, I worked at a GM dealership that had 2 owners. The one with his name on the building started a used car lot in a nearby town. He would buy cars at auction, then have them looked over by me, then detailed at the main dealership before taking them to the used lot. At first, he had every car for the used lot gone over at the main dealership. But after a while, he got tired of us pointing out problems, so he just took them straight to the used lot, had his kids wash them, then stuck them straight on the lot for sale. No inspections, nothing. Not even oil changes. The only time he fixed anything on one of the used lot cars was if someone said "fix this issue, and I'll buy it". Otherwise, they were untouched mechanically. That came back to bite him several times, but he didn't care. The second owner would buy nicer used cars for the main dealership that rarely needed a single thing. Sometimes not even oil changes, but we did them anyway, because he insisted. After I left, the main dealership lost it's GM backing when the government bailout happened, so the shady main owner sold his half to the second owner. He turned it into a used lot that sells quality used cars.

Kenny, I have a 07 Silverado that had the same frame issues. Bought it off a used car lot and when I went to put shocks on it I found all the frame issues. Those early 07-10 Silverados all have that issue in the rust belt because the coating GM used on the frames did not adhere properly and starts to release from the frame but does not tear off. This created pockets for water to get trapped between the coating and the steel. I actually went through and cut out and replaced all the cross members, shock mounts and sections of the frame rail on mine. You will more than likely find that the drivers frame rail that is next to the gas tank will be rusted through as well. I still have the before and after pics of all the work it took to fix everything. Not a fast process.

Fascinating - it appears that GM has issued this same recall more than once!! Their fix is to strip off the affected wax areas and use a prep paint that is 3% phosphoric acid and 1% zinc. Then reapply the Nox wax. "The General blames the problem on a third-party supplier’s error, in which the supplier did not prep the metal of the frames correctly. As a result, the wax coating did not adhere properly, leading to it peeling off after exposure to the elements and driving conditions. GM has an available fix for this problem, offered at its dealerships."

If I cant get under it, I have a extendable phone holder and take video so I can see the condition. Had a few freak out when I plugged my scanner in. 🤣I got burned once 4 decades ago, never again. Hi Ken, Good video. There are ways to go about this. Do you know how much they paid for the truck? Maybe not too much, so they can afford to get a whole chassis from a southern truck or a low mile truck with a smashed front, then R&R everything. Or as a last resort, sell the body, and drivetrain. Which way they go all comes down to what it will be worth when they are done. I come from a low income area where the used car lots sold vehicles just like that. The people who bought them could not be dissuaded, so I'd give them a list of safety items to fix in order of priority and I am telling you they would come in every other week Semper Fidelis and get something done. It was a goldmine for the shop owner. I get what you're saying though: Why didn't they come in for a safety inspection first? Well that stems from your perspective. Ordinary people don't know the goings on of an automobile, and they're not lawyers, so they don't know. What I saw was they get bit by that "new car bug," and it bites hard. Once they "see" themselves in it, they can't leave it behind. You said yourself the body looks great. So you just have to work with them. Unless you hate doing that kind of work, give them an itemized list and give them an hourly rate. Visit a body shop who takes "totaled" vehicles and puts them back together. It's a lucrative line of work if you don't mind working on smashed stuff. Ditto with rust. ben/ michigan

In the UK, the way this is dealt with is by the annual inspection. Used car sellers will normally get a new sticker, so it is sold with 1 year of motoring. It would be unusual they would let you take the car to an inspection station. Our main recovery companies offer to go to the dealer to inspect, but you have to be a member, and pay for this.
@cokdnlokd1238
@cokdnlokd1238 11 ай бұрын
Inspection stickers were almost universal here until it was finally realized that they were worthless. Cars from states that had inspections were found to be not one iota in better condition and in some cases better. This led to many states stopping the useless TAX that was the only real reason the inspections were in place anyway.

Man that is upsetting to see. Looks like a nice truck too. That rust belt is something else, people should rust treat their vehicles every year there. I have lived here my entire 49 years. I do not know what it is but something changed about 10-15 years ago with what they put down on the roads. Things rusted years ago but not like they do now. I bought a truck 3 years ago from down south and It wasn't rusty at all. I coeaned and undercoated the enitre frame when I bought it. I washed it regularly now 3 years later my frame is gone. It is either the materials GM is using or the chemicals they are putting down. It is no longer just salt. It is salt mixed with this blue chemical.....wish I knew what that is. I have seen with my own eyes 2 year old cars rusting badly
@jthonn
@jthonn 9 ай бұрын
I don't know what that could be, may be the chemicals that they use for driveways and such. Needless to say that they don't make cars like they use to. I'm sure the frames or these unibodies are as light as they can get away with. Undercoating I would guess doesn't work well for a newer car because it may hold the moisture in the metal and cause it to rot that way. It is a no win situation. I would wash underneath the best I could and treat with that rust reversal stuff once a year and hope for the best. The price of cars now days is outrageous, I would say they need to make the frames stainless steel. The problem with that is stainless will snap and not bend as well, so it could be bad if you get into a collision.@@scottp7620

@@scottp7620 The salt turned into a brine now instead of salt rock. "So adding this bluish tint to that brine will help us ensure that we know what roads have been brined just a little more visible than other salt is." McLeod adds you'll probably really be able to see the Liquitint Winter after snow is on the roads as it will turn some snow blue" Depends on what kind of undercoat - the Fluid Film does not last - nor any mineral oil. GM uses a petrolatum wax. Only it dries out and flakes off. So it only lasts a couple years - also it's probably too thin so water gets through it. I have been trying to save a 2004 TrailBlazer - with the box chassis frame. I got a frame repair kit welded on - since Colorado has the same frame. I got a patch plate weld put on. I sprayed phosphoric acid inside the frame and around. The Rustoleum Epoxy Applicance spraypaint actually holds up well. I used ChassisSaver also - it peeled in some places but held up in other places. Messy stuff though and cures in the can after you open it. I used RP-342 paraffin wax. Now I just made a DIY petrolatum wax from toilet rings - 3 lbs of it - with 1 lb of paraffin mixed into 4 lbs of pure gum turpentine (that also leaves a rosin). Too thick to spray it - so I didn't get really good coverage. I will now buy FluidFilm black for the inside of the box frame - I used a boroscope and the phosphoric acid did convert the rust. On the underbody in general I'll use STA-BIL® Rust Stopper which is another petrolatum spray with mineral oil.

That truck must have been sitting in water for a couple of years, hurricane maybe or located in the northeast rust belt. I've got a 2001 dodge ram that has no rust on the frame.

Didn’t think you could sell a vehicle with a bad frame being a dealer

Another channel discussed a similar issue the other day except he was working on 2018 he is always saying that in his area 10 - 15 years tops. This would be a good doner for a body shop that had a good frame on down.

Just wait till you see what the tail light brackets look like, take out the lights and most likely the entire structure is gone

It became a parts truck. It was so far gone, it wasn't safe to be on the road. Thanks for watching 🔧

Being a mechanic and a car lover myself as much as it's easy to just shitbag a certain manufacturer, the real blame should be on the owners. Everyone is worried about the parts you see to wash, it's everything else you need to worry about giving a good rinse periodically. Spraying up in the wheel wells and under the underside does wonders prolonging the rust. An underbody wash at the carwash a few times a winter helps alot

Must have came from up north where a lot of salt is used during winter. Ask about the history of a vehicle and where its from.

Only takes a few seconds to lay down and look under the truck. Tap it wjtb a screwdriver and if it’s not solid walk away. If the owner won’t let a mechanic look it over pre-purchase than you definitely don’t want that vehicle!!!

If these northern states would take a page from Oregon and Washington States vehicles won't rot out like this!!! They don't need to use salt or that other CR@p that's basically acid to metal and eats away bridges.
