2012 Equinox muffler repair

Few clips of my 2012 Chevy Equinox "Nox" with the muffler split from Rusting.
This is what happens to a muffler in Wisconsin winters. Metal rusts out.
Thought I'd try the JB Weld product - Extreme Heat Temperature Resistant Metallic Repair Paste.
So far I have 1 oil change on it, and still holding good and strong.
Hopefully even longer....

I ordered this product and am still waiting for it to arrive. In the mean time I had some regular JB quick weld on hand, so I used that on an exhaust pipe leak between my drivers and passenger seat. 700 miles later I crawled under the car with a bottle of windex and sprayed the repair area, while I had a hose hooked to the exhaust of my shop vac to pressurize the exhaust system. No leaks like before. Amazing JB quick weld held up on an exhaust pipe, since it is only rated for 450 degrees. I'm sure an exhaust manifold gets much hotter than the exhaust pipe though.

My 2012 Equinox, a IL and IA native suffered from the same split. Used JB weld high temp and it is holding for the past 6 months. Will replace in the spring. All of the chain auto repair places wanted $325-$350. I found a small shop that will do it for $200 and put a clamp on the back so the entire pipe does not need replaced. I highly recommend using Fluid Film on your underbody, suspension, inside doors and hood, and battery terminals works great and stops the rust. Never put a hard or rubber permanent coating as this will trap moisture and guarantee accelerated rust. Just reapply Fluid Film once a year.

I believe that is the resonator, not really the muffler; that is located at the very back, parallel to the bumper. Anyway, I've tried the same repair a while back, and it's not really a long term solution to the problem. Resonator needs to be replaced. I also live in a area with lots of salty roads in the winter, so I'm not surprised

OK.............Everyone, New update... This didn't hold. It lasted over the winter then pretty much fell off!!! Need to finally replace the muffler.. Talk about me being a "Cheap Guy".. Autozone has a replacement muffler for under $60.00. Well, now to change it. :(

@@John-se7kl .. Yeah its not bad..3 months. Its possible that because he stretched it over the full length that the coating was a bit thin. Would be interesting to know how much longer it would have lasted if he had applied a couple more coats to get a thicker layer, maybe reinforced with a wire mesh. Once it's cured after a couple of days, I might have considered putting the jb weld high temperature putty over it as well.

You could also try a strip of woven fiberglass and work the JB Weld into it. Slap it on the same way and it might hold together better. By the way, I drive my big rig up and down I-41 in your area at least three days per week.

I know you said the grinding disc was 36 grit, but from what I can tell from the video it looks like the disc was wore out. The surface of the metal looks too smooth. I've done this repair with a new 36grit disc and drilled about six 1/8" holes on each side of the crack. I let the JB weld (not the high temp, but regular 500 degree stuff that comes in 2 tubes)cure all weekend, and it's still holding 3 years later. So maybe just a little more surface prep, and using the regular stuff made the difference. Or maybe I just got lucky, who knows

Thanks Ed, that's what I was thinking but I didn't have any other pads to use.... so prolly my fault. I bought a new muffler off the internet for I think $60.00. All is good now except it makes a funny "flerting" sound when cold... haha.. oh well, the joys of being a loyal GM owner... Now if I could just get the engine to stop clattering when I first start it.....

I think if it is just a little rusty then it could hold better too. I installed a muffler and couldn't find the right size connector. The connector is a little to big and it is leaking around the connector. The exhaust pipe is in good condition other than a little surface rust. Filled in area where the new muffler is connected to exhaut pipe and so far it stopped the exhaust leak and isn't falling apart. One thing about getting this stuff cure. After it is most of the way dry, running the car for awile cures it all the way.

I got the same thing but, in a tube. I read the directions and it didn't say anything about mixing it first. I applied it and it isn't drying all the way and I bet it was because I didn't mix it first. It came out and there was liquid dripping out and it is because, I didn' t mix it.

@@rosstempletonogskater You really don't have to mix the stuff that comes in the tube. I was doing it on a rainy lower temp day. It takes a long time to dry even on a hot day. What does worry me about this stuff though. If it gets inside the muffler it, can cause the exhaust to backup. In turn I would worry about fumes getting inside car. I would say to be carefull about not getting any inside muffler.

I used JB weld muffler cement and didn't last a month. Cracked and is leaking. Will apply on top again and see what happens.

The vehicle is a 2012 and the video is made in 2018. In 71000 the muffler splits rusts out? What it tells you is GM uses crappy exhaust systems. Six years old and the exaust is cracking and rusting out, nuts.

Hey Hawskyflier, I have exactly the same car (year, color etc) with the same problem. I was going to do the same thing but when I read your comment I think is better to replace it. So, I brought to a mechanic and I was told that I need to replace the whole exhaust system because it is one piece. But from what I understand you can replace only the muffler? Can you post the link for the part at autozone?

I did this to the letter cleaned it with wire wheel on drill put it on my Cat converter after inside clogged my exhaust.Wow at first it was as had as hell. A week later it flaked off.Do not buy it

Danny Chaney because i think they say it has metal particles in it, so it wouldn't be very surprising if it is. If it is conductive then it can be used for situations where u need conductivity.... just curious about the properties of the epoxy.
