Salut! Thank you for this guide, extremely helpful! I have a 2013 Fiat 500 that had trouble starting because of the ECU (couldn't scan for DTCs through OBD), but I opened it and cleaned up a bit (it was opened before by previous owner) and now it starts fine. However, after a day of not having any problems, the check engine lighted up and I couldn't read any error codes (which is what happened the first time). So I want to clone this ECU to one that I got from a scrapyard to make sure it doesn't die on me in the middle of no where (from a 2012 Fiat 500, but it's the same hardware). Whenever I try reading either with the KTAG, it shows "Error communicating with the ECU. Check connections..." Sometimes the error is different: "Micro protection removal failed." I looked around (for a long time) and saw that sometimes it's a bad PSU (I tried with a lab PSU with voltage from 12 to 13.5V, like you did) or maybe the ECU was updated at the dealership (and therefore the KTAG can't read it). I realize that this is a shot in the dark, but did you ever run into similar problems while trying to dump this ECU? Bad KTAG clone? I tried with the Kess, but it won't write, just read (although I think it might just be the maps, so no complete cloning there). I'm losing my mind trying to get this to work lol. Thanks!

so, the only thing i could see is that you have a bad clone. Ive done this with my ktag clone and my kt200 with no issues, you could always use oem software to rewrite the new ecu, if you want just a clone you could ship them to me and i could give it a go. if you are in the montreal area let me know and you can just give them to me.

@@JLsAutoSolution hey thanks for the quick response and the offer! But it might not be necessary. I'll return that faulty ktag clone. I just tried something today and I think it worked. I read the donor eeprom with a cheap CH341a, wrote it on the new ECU and then the car could start with it. I used the Kess to read and write the maps and it worked! It wouldn't write initially because of the immo, but now I think I've got a clone of my ECU even though it was through unconventional means 😅 (unless I'm missing something; I''m no mechanics, just a poor student trying to make my cheap car run again)
