2012 Hyundai Elantra Grinding Noise on Cold Startu

My car only has 72k miles on it. This noise started about a month ago (I've only had the car for 1.5 months) and, at first, only happened every other day. Now, it does this knocking/grinding sound every cold startup and, sometimes, on a cool startup. I thought it was the starter and went to get it check - checked out fine - same with the engine.
The noise recently started occurring when I give the car extra gas to make it up a steeper incline. Any thoughts??

This is the sound of the valves briefly opening and closing without the lubrication of the motor oil. When you shut the car off, oil is no longer being pumped around and begins to fall down into the oil pan and the longer the car sits, the more oil will end up leaving the top end where the valves and camshaft are. When you start the car cold, the oil is thicker and heavier (especially when the ambient temperature is colder like in the winter) and takes longer to get pumped through the engine. Long story short, this sound is totally normal and is nothing to worry about. I've owned three Hyundais including a 2012 Elantra and they've all done it.

The oil drains out of the cvvt actuators and when the vehicle is first started up it will rattle till the oil pressure builds back up.

I have a 2012 with same sound, the car has 167000 miles on it and it is a loose timing chain tensioner and lifter noise. Besides warming up the car ,The most important thing to do is use the proper viscosity oil and a quality filter. It is a common problem with variable valve timing engines and I've heard hondas and fords make the same exact noise. If this noise does not go away after complete warm up I would look at actually oil pressure.

Years ago 167000 the car would've have been complete junk. Now everybody's complaining cuz it makes a little rattle here in there. Run it till it breaks and when it breaks fix it.. more than likely all the switch gears still good Headliners are still up seats are good shape. The Driveline and suspension exhaust and electrical it's all probably good shape.

@@chasl3645 Let us put this into perspective, years ago (actually several decades ago to be exact) Honda was making engine that regularly last into the 400k and 500k range. So having a Hyundai today that can only go 200k is really not acceptable but then again it is not a Honda.

I did a fair amount of CV joints and exhaust systems and brake calipers and alternators and radiators timing belts. No the Kia's have been better so far. Out of the 7 of them they've gone farther over longer time with the less problems. For less money.That equals great value. Not to mention they're rust buckets

it sounds like the valve system. they do that in colder temps, if its winter and very cold, the oil pump will have a hard time picking up the oil and movining it thru. ull need 0w instead of 5w or 10w for freezing temps or lower temps, the 0w oil will move faster in the cold temps.

My '14 Elantra has 8,000 miles and makes that same noise when it's very cold outside, just the nature of 4 cylinder motors honestly, my quad 4 in my '90 Cutlass Supreme use to make that noise when it was cold. The oil hasn't had a chance to lubricate the entire engine quite yet so it's a little noisy, totally normal.

Timing chain tensioner is losing it’s prime after an extended shut down. The dealer should replace the tensioner under warranty if oil changes have been performed regularly.

Either needs timing chains or cvvt's. sometimes the incorrect oil filter causes the same noise. now the ticking noise that sounds all the time is from the fuel injectors because it's direct injected and it runs at a higher pressure then older cars

ok i have the same car 2012 elantra 1.8..cold it sounds like a diesel,so here is a a test for all..wait til its cold and crank it..should make the sound and stop in 2 sec then run normal..what happens is the Hyd tensioner bleeds back to the pan so when you first start it makes the noise..then shut it off and start it right back up..if you have a bad tensioner it should sound perfect...wait 10mins do again it will diesel again,then start it right up and gone...bleed back...the problem is as this keeps happening pieces start to drop in the oil and can get caught in the tensioner...replace it and clean out all passages change oil and i hate to say this but pull the pan and clean it also,clean the oil screen as well.make sure no metal pieces are jumping around...

My 2011 makes the same noise. It happens when it’s cold outside and it only happens when it’s been sitting all night in the cold. During the summer months I don’t hear it. Everyone keeps saying it’s the oil. My car has been maintained by the dealer since day one. I’m very good at getting my oil changes on time. I’m taking it in next week for an oil change. I just had the spark plugs replaced. I’m going to force them to listen to a recording of a cold start. It’s impossible to recreate the sound since it only does it first thing in the morning. I will force them to explain what that noise is....I’ll come back and leave an update after the oil change.

I have the same problem.. First dealer told me that it's the timing chain tensioner. I replaced the whole timing chain assembly for $1,400.00. Noise is still there. I took it back, now dealer says it's CVVT assembly, about $2,000 repair. Dealer said it's no big deal and you can drive with it.

You need a new timing chain and the timing chain tensioner. I have a Tucson that did this when it’s below at least -5*c. Had a mechanic replace it, paid $800.00 for both parts and labour together, engine running smooth as butter ever since

My 2011 Elantra does da same thing , when I put in the key n start it up . Been doing it fir over a year . I took it to da dealer two years ago n ask them check n they told me I need new motor but now it over heats n firestone told, me , 2 months ago. I need fan assembly n thermostat n top n bottom hose n I may need to change the water pump am thinking while doing all this too. Yeah I also need to change front struts n brakes pads n maybe rotors . Yeah I got lot going on. I owe $3500 still to pay on it .

Sounds normal. Make sure you change oil and filter every 4,000 or 5,000 if synthetic oil is use on this vehicule.(use good oil, not cheap crap.). Dont forget change Transmission fluid every 60,000 or 100,000 mile. Check you vehicule manual for maintenance. all cars are different.

Jason, did you have any noises while driving. I can hear a slight rattle like something is vibrating or rolling. I have taken the car to 3 different mechanics, 2 being Hyundai dealers. 1st mechanic (family friend) told me it's not the timing chain and it's an issue with Elantras and id need a new motor. 2nd mechanic, told me it's my alternator. He's an idiot. 3rd mechanic, also Hyundai dealer told me it's my timing chain but seemed to be basing that only on the short videos I sent. Neither Hyundai acted as if they had heard of piston issues in the Elantras.

Sorry, once I was rolling it was not noticeable. Start ups were bad. Just like the sound of dragging a bicycle chain across a shovel, loud and fast in revolutions. All of the timing chain guides were bad and the chain was loose. New chain and guide fixed it. Good luck!

You can solve mild cases of this issue by doing an oil change with a Hyundai oil filter, or oil change at a Hyundai dealer. These filters are better at regulating oil pressure for the next startup. Cheap aftermarket/ quick lube oil filters can cause this issue with timing chain tensioners that need oil pressure at startup. The timing chain will chatter and that’s what we hear here.

Replace the oil with a good quality synthetic like royal purple 5w20 and use an oem hyundai/kia oil filter and that noise will go away. My 2012 soul with the 2.0L (same engine family as your 1.8) had the same issue when I first bought it.

Further to my earlier post, Dealer said it had been run without oil - I provided a statutory declaration and full service history. they said ti would cost $3650 incl labor. I asked who I could complain to and they suggested Hyundai Customer Care in Sydney (4000km) away on the other side of the continent. Did so and they were very obliging ringing me back within 1 hour and approving a total replacement within 2 days after talking to the dealer. Had to wait 3 weeks for 2 bolts from Korea but back on the road again. Still a very loud bottom end rumble but no tickling and the fuel consumption has reduced dramatically. Now to tidy it up and get rid of it!!! Wont buy another Hyundai.

that 2 second noise right from the start is the timing chain tensioner i needs oil pressure to tension and that is why you get that noise and you have lifter noise-we do not know you oil change history-we do not know if there in conventional oil or synthetic-we do not know the grade of oil that is in the car---there are lot of unknowns--i see this on fords---as a tech for 30 years i would say you need to do your oil changes right go to the dealer at hyundai and stay there and get there opinon and i am sure they have many cars with that noise and you may want to trade it in or fix it or get an opinion from them-that is my best advise i can give you god bless-lol does not exist only jesus

GDI Theta II engines were recalled due to manufacturer defect. yours falls into the category for the recall. take it to the dealer / service center and have them do a replacement. if you are the first owner of the car, it should be covered up to 100K. if not it should be covered 5 year, 60K. in any case if you have the GDI Theta II engine, it's still been recalled cause for 2011 and 2012 they extended the warranty.

Get a Hyundai oil filter in there. Aftermarket oil filters cause problems like this in these cars. Hyundai oil filters have check valves to regulate oil pressure for the next startup

She's right. It does sound like the starter does not disconnect. So much on these cars are computer controlled. Maybe a reflash or update of the ECU would stop that. Or maybe an issue with the starter bendix.

Replace your Crankshaft position sensor. It monitors position and rotation speed of the crankshaft and controls the fuel injection or the ignition system timing and other engine parameters. It generates it own electrical charge. My car just started doing this like a few weeks ago. I'm at 105K miles. I have a recall on my Elantra for Electronic Stability Control System (ESC). Notified over a month ago. Hyundai won't fix mine! 2012 Elantra with 85k. Its a common problem. Dealer says I have to replace the engine, they took it apart to find the metal shavings in the oil . Hyundai won't touch it. I'm still not done complaining.

I just purchased a 2011 that was doing this, after fucking around with it and reading all the comments on this video I realized it’s the abs compressor if you barely push the brake pedal to start the car and let off the break immediately it doesn’t make the noise anymore. If I push the brake to the floor it makes the noise, people have reported it doing this but backwards, saying push the brake hard and it won’t make the noise. Sad hearing all these people spending thousands of dollars and still having the same problem.

You have to push the brake pedal for the car to start.... even when you use the remote start the car engages the brake. Just posting what worked for me....

Take it back to the dealership. There is a recall for many of their crappy built engines.

The fact is, these are cheap throw-away cars with cheap parts a whole lot of design issues. Unless you are going to rebuild it, you just have to hound the dealer, but don’t expect them to admit anything. Hyundai had a class action lawsuit over the 1.8L engine. They agree to extend the warranties but will only fix it if you can show perfect maintenance records. 1. The coatings wear off the pistons and scores the bore, but really is caused by number 2. 2. The piston skirt is too short and once the rings wear, allows the piston to tilt and the bottom of the skirt breaks or get ground off on your cylinder walls. 3. The wrist pin in the piston can cause piston slap noise. 4. The timing chain tensioner freezes up and has to be replaced. And it’s a pain to get to. If you are replacing then go ahead and do the timing chain, chain guides as well. 5. The timing chain guides wear and the timing chain stretches, but all car do this to sone degree at high mileage. 6. The lifters wear and cause excess lash, but all cars do this to some degree after high mileage. 7. The Variable Valve Timing Solenoids (2) get sludged up and have to be replaced, but not at low mileage.

Mine does the same thing it's not the timing belt is the oil pressure. and by putting in a hyundai oil filter does not change the problem. the fact of the matter hyundai s are shity cheap cars that are engineered very poorly

Just had this happen to mine changed the oil, oil filter, timing chain, timing chain tensioner. This looks to be the cam phaser which is a complete bitch and will run a few hundred dollars at least at a dealership.

I have the same rattle on startup. Dealership told me last week it is the timing chain that has come a bit stretched, that it was no problem and they tend to sound like that. Hopefully dude is right...
