My 2010 elantra does the same .I tried castro 5w30. It still is noisy on a cold start up,. But i think the noise is coming from the bottom end. I only have 82,000 kms.. I might triy some Lucas top end lube, or a thicker oil 10w30 for the summer. Most engines should not tick that much . They have hydraulic lifters, that self adjust, not like the old days when they had solid lifters. Try some upper valve lube , that might help.

I have seen engines tick for thousands and thousands of miles and never have a issue. I have also seen people try to fix the issue only to make things worse. If its not affecting you in any way but a lil noise best leave alone. Its like the customer who complains about squeaky brakes. Brakes have to stop a giant hunk of metal they will make noise sometimes. I bought a motorcycle once that was actually knocking. Not ticking but knocking for $400. Very nice super bike. Honda CBR 1000cc. The guy said he gave it a tune up and drove it home. Then the engine started knocking. He stated he was driving fast so assumed he blew it up. 99% of people would think the same. Not me I bought the bike got it home and started my diagnosis. The issue was two of his spark plugs had came loose and the engine was missing so bad it was knocking. Unburnt gas was hitting the exhaust making it worse. I tightened the plugs and had a $5000 bike. I drove it for 6 months and went ahead and make $4600 off of it. I have 3 ATVs right now worth $3000 or $4000 together. I bought them for less than $500. The issues were all electrical that someone else couldn't fix or didn't want to spend the money to fix. Electrical issues are tricky and it took me about 3 hours on each to rewire things and track down issues but it can be done. Dont be scared to buy that nice broke down ride. Sometimes its a simple repair.

I’ve got a 2012 Hyundai Elantra I bought new. Drive it 110 miles round trip to work every day. Mine has a little ticking to it at startup. But I’ve got 235K miles on it, and runs great. I change the oil every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W 20/high mileage, and use the more expensive K&N oil filter. Only replaced the battery and plugs. Same brake pads and everything else! Maybe I should run 5W 30. I like the car and gonna try and get at least 300-500K on it.

Maybe even a gentle engine flush. Something that is OK to leave in. Something slow acting like Hotshots Secret Stiction Eliminator maybe. It can be used in gasoline or Diesel engines. It is somewhat expensive at around $25 for a quart. It also has their friction reducer in it. They guarantee it in that they will refund you if you are not happy with it for some reason. Just make sure to still have a receipt for it and maybe even be ready to send the remaining product back. In my opinion you might not find yourself sending it back. It works really and there are many people who would say similar things. I do not sell their products or have any connection with them. I just tried their stuff and it worked for me. My vehicle is a Nissan and does not have any ticking problems and I should point out your luck may vary. You don't need to have a high mileage engine to use anything like this BTW. In fact on a high mileage engine you may see leaks. That is because the stuff it cleans out may have been the only thing plugging leaks in the gaskets. It is the reason why some people might tell you not to use a synthetic oil. There was also a time when synthetic oils were thought to cause leaks. The products I mentioned not only contain a friction reducer made by that company but they use synthetic base stocks and additives in their oils and other products. I would love to have a vehicle that never had anything like that in it and let a friend take it for a ride and then quietly put that in it without telling him. This is a good way to test whether it seems to do anything and without him having any knowledge that you used something in it that would eliminate the placebo effect. The idea is that if they know there is something there they will have an expectation of improvement or maybe even think that there was one. The idea is they don't know anything except what they may notice when they operate the vehicle. When you see him next ask if he noticed any difference between that trip and the ones before it, then you reveal what you did to your vehicle. This is a good way to prove that not all additives are snake oil to the cynics and skeptics. They may be cynical from all the money they wasted trying other products that did not perform as well as they would expect.

Wanted to add that piston slap at least where I live describes when the pistons rock back and forth in the bore when the engine is cold. Not when you have a piston pin worn and it's making a noise. A lot of inline 6-cylinder 4-L Jeep engines suffer from piston slap when they're cold. other people have mentioned this but there may be a warranty claim available through Hyundai on this problem. Other people have mentioned they are replacing engines regardless of the year or mileage or whether you're the first owner or not.

My 2016-2017 accent both do this cold as soon as they motors get to just over 1000 rpm it goes away ! Bought both on the same day both new in February 2017 ! As the closer you get to your 5000km oil change it gets louder ! My next oil change I will be switching to 5w30 I have been thinking 5w20 is to light! Only reason I haven’t switched yet is because I got 2 years of free oil changes ! Also both cars have 150000 km 8 year power train warranty! Always keep oil clean it’s the best thing you can do ! My father bought a 1992 ford ranger with 250000 Kms for 1500 bucks my father changed the oil every 4000kms and in the summer he ran diesel oil in it and the winter he would switch back to 10w30 and that truck ran with no problems for over the 15 years for him only thing he did was a few water pumps exhaust and brake pads ! The frame and body rusted out and the motor was still running at 890000 kms when we took it to the scrap yard ! Best 1500 bucks he ever spent lol !
@dtnetlurker6 жыл бұрын
A slight tick is completely normal for this engine. As is gets broke in it will have a slight tick especially when the engine is really cold like in the winter. It is the lifters on this car, not piston slap. They are louder than on some cars. If you develop a real knocking like from a bad piston you will hear it cause it will be loud as hell. You won't be able to hear yourself think. Take it to any authorised dealer that knows all about the particular engine. They will tell you the same thing. Even some seasoned mechanics have to ask for help from time to time. Also use only Hyundai OEM oil filters. Other ones make the ticking louder.
@richardgordon33976 жыл бұрын
somebody correct me if i am wrong but that car does not have lifters its a overhead cam so when the camshaft turns the lobes on the cam push directly onto rockers that push the valves open and on the down side of the lobe it closes the valves.i have seen many used cars with a engine knock and some people trying to get rid of it run a really heavy oil to try and mute the noise..also a different oil filter will have nothing to do with engine noise unless you forgot to put a new one on and ran out of oil in 30 seconds...it sounds like it has a bent valves or worse
@williamstroker88926 жыл бұрын
These cars as most overhead cam engines have hydraulic lifters. Very few overhead cam engines have solid lifters most notably older Hondas thus they require periodic valve adjustments. And this noise is lifter tick sludge builds up in the lifters. Piston slap is caused by the piston skirts and the piston caviating ie shrinking in diameter, this was an issue with gm 3100 engines in the 90's

It's funny if you read the comments. Most are Hyundai owners who got past the fear stage of the ticking noise. Everyone has found solutions to the problem. But the great part is that most have more than 100k miles and the cars are still running. Hyundai is very reliable, they have great original engine gaskets. You will rarely see these cars leak oil. The most important part is that they seriously put reliability of other cars to the test. They may not be the best cars but damn do they love their owners.

If you had one of those funnels with the mesh in the end of it that would catch anything you may want to see. Also if the oil is really bad it may clog that mesh some so make sure to have a place where you can leave it drain into the bottle. That would be a place out of the way where you won't forget and accidentally knock it over. It may pass through the funnel quick enough that it would not be that problem. The funnel I am thinking of is probably something that would be sold for filling hydraulic fluid. Someone with expensive equipment who doesn't want dirt getting into his machines would be likely to use a funnel like this. You could also use a funnel like that to put oil in your car or truck engine if it fits in the fill hole. These are a big funnel too and look like they could hold nearly a quart of oil but that oil won't be in there long enough for it to fill unless you like pouring it fast. I would recommend some sort of slow acting gentle engine flush you can leave in until the next change and maybe change the filter part way through. There is a comment by me in here somewhere about a product I like. I have no idea if you will like it or not. Why is that you may wonder? It is simply that everyone is different. Also there is a chance that it might not help this ticking sound. I doubt that it would make it worse but you never know. I would never guarantee it not to cause a new problem. It is something that you would use more for preventative maintenance. I also can't guarantee it because if it is a worn out or broken part causing it that will not magically repair it.

Thanks for the info. I have a 2014 Elantra. I had the same problem with knocking/ ticking. The car has 112,000 miles on it. I changed the oil and the problem went away. I had almost 4,000 miles between oil changes. Could it be the oil needs to be changed more frequently? You also said the ticking was coming from the top of the engine. Could it be the valves needing adjustment? Are the valves adjustable on this engine? This problem came about because the car wouldn't start. I got 112,000 trouble free miles from the engine. I changed the plugs and the filters and still the same problem. At first I thought it was a gas pump and filter. I watched your video how to change it. ( Good video)I figured out the engine wasn't getting gas. But the pump wasn't the problem. So I took it to the dealer and they flushed the fuel injectors, and no more hard starting. That's when the dealer mentioned the ticking noise. Changing oil solved the problem. Thanks for all the info, you're a very intelligent mechanic. Hats off to you, and much success.

Yeah... See.... My first engine had that issue - I had 1 week left of warranty and they tried to get out of it saying "oh you didn't put enough oil in it" even though I had receipts to prove it. _(keep in mind this was with my insurance)_ - after idk 3 weeks, and $2k out of my pocket - I got a 50k mile engine. It has been about 1 year, I just got an oil change 2 weeks ago (beginning of 2020 to "start the year off right") and it's happening again but is way worse than before. Before, you didn't hear a knock - it just died. This time, it sounds like a diesel engine that doesn't want to shift gears. It is a factory defect (they didn't clean them properly, leaving slight metal flakes) whether or not they're gonna fix it for you free of charge, idk. Also, get a new dipstick, they say the dipsticks weren't reading oil levels properly. _(I believe the new ones are red, instead of yellow)_

Ticking and Nocking are different things. Those Hyundai's ticking sounds are normal due to the direct injection and motor design. The ticking is louder in the mornings (cold start) due to the engine reving up above 1000 rpm to warm the catalytic converter (about 15 seconds, then the ticking noise reduce but you can still hear the tic). The cam shaft sound is normal, the opening and closing of the valves sound is louder than other cars. You can even hear the fuel injectors ticking on those cars louder then others too.

Hello guys I have a 2016 elantra gls and changed the timing chain and got a new fuel pump but still the car stalls and loses power in the first gear and produces a popping sound but runs good in all other gears please help,

That things got another 100000+ miles left on it. The injectors have a tapping sound to them especially on the gdi's . Also would have liked to have heard it after it was warmed up.

My sonata has a knock also it’s 2015 but it has 130000 miles and it’s been knocking like that for last 30k miles I’ve asked a few mechanics and nobody seems to know but when you’re driving at hire rpm or even when you’re standing still and give some gas after about 1000 rpm then I don’t hear it no more but when you stay at a light you hear it even when the engine is warm
@stevefranklin80526 жыл бұрын
Its definitely not rod knocking, would never go 30.000 miles with a rod knocking.

I have an issue with Hyuindai Elantra 2012. It starts and runs fine. When you stop and turn off engines after driving for 10 minutes, it just turns but not start until it cools off for about 45 minutes. Does not run hot or no other issues.

Some Hyundia engines make a bit of a different noise or is that just the same noise at higher engine speed? It makes the cars sound so cheaply made!

Hyundai engines have been known for valve noise on start up as long as I’ve known anything about Hyundais. I actually didn’t hear less noise after the guy changed the oil. Just drive the car gently until it warms up.

Sound was still there and even worse, and even after you did the oil change, you need to let the oil settle in for more than just half a second. Also probably use Valvoline instead of Castrol GTX.

The ticking you hear when they change the oil is the high pressure fuel pump and the direct injection head design.

Justin Hall this particular engine is not gdi. This is the multiport injection one. Notice the engine cover just says DOHC (dual overhead cam)

Hyundai had an issue with cast flashing inside engine that didn't get removed and later could break free and cause this issue. Hyundai will cover an engine replacement free of charge if you fall under this issue no matter the year or mileage. 👏🏼

You can't get ride of from this noise by changing motor oil guys. You should open the cylinder head cover up. And then change hydraulic valve lifters. There are some additives to stop this noise. But it is not permanent solution.

Our 2015 Sonata did that when it was low on oil, being the fact that it burned oil like a beast. That was a warning noise

@fourtysix46465 жыл бұрын
Don’t tell mr.lube this... they ask people to rev their engines to 2500 rpm for 10 seconds or so and then shut the engine off so they can check the oil level now that the oil filter and etc are filled. Only went there a few times but it seems to be standard procedure.

My 2011 Elantra had the short block changed under warranty at 42,000km because of this same problem. 2 weeks ago at 92,000km, my car wouldn't start and the engine light came on. My code reader said it was my camshaft position sensor. I had it towed to the dealer and they said a piece from the camshaft fell and my engine is finished. I'm now waiting for Hyundai to give the okay for a warranty engine replacement. Those NU+ engines are crap!
