Now that the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is home it's time to try and diagnose the 1.6L 4 cylinder Gamma engine. It was listed with a broken rod or blown engine but the more I look into this car the less serious I think it is. The noise definitely sounds like it's coming from the top end and it runs so well that can't be down a cylinder. We stick a borescope down in the cylinders to inspect for damage and then compression test the engine. I'm holding out hope that it's something in the timing system, possibly one of the VVT sprockets or the timing chain tensioner. Either way it's time to tear this engine down and figure out what we're working with.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZbin videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Hey i am a certified Hyundai service advisor and these engines are prone to engine failure. I would not advise to remove the head since it isn't necessary. 99% of the failure on these engine are rod bearings. I would first drain the oil and remove the oil pan and Boom! you will encounter excessive play in one of the rows. Hopefully this is helpful since i deal with these cars and techs on a daily. Good luck !

These require 5w20 synthetic most of the time. Anyone who buys a Hyundai without a turbo want a cheap running car. With cheap buyers come a cheap lifestyle for the car. The results, people use conventional and synthetic blends on these causing premature wear.

@@Hughesburner My GF bought a cobalt, without meeting the previous owner (weird chain of events). But the interior was in worse shape than this one as far as filth, and the exterior had been keyed and a few small dents from being kicked. We had to find the previous owner for the paperwork, but judging by the contents of the interior, and the condition it was in, we pretty much knew exactly who we were going to find... It was essentially the same person that previously owned this veloster. Except she had a kid, so you can imagine how sticky the back seat area was. Mechanically, and underneath the car was in really great shape, but we got a smoking deal on it due to the keyed paint and the filth. Easy fixes! Buying a used car is about looking at the car AND judging the previous owner.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet or if you already know, (too many comments to read all) but there is a effective way to easily & cheaply repair the hundreds of hail dimple dents you have, but it is scary to some people though. It involves a Oxy-acetylene torch, a old washcloth or small bathtowel and a bucket of cold water. If you never did it before, I suggest getting a scrap panel & using the round end of a small ballpeen hammer to make some dimple dents of your own in your practice panel, then basically set up the torch with a long orange flame (not a short blue flame like your gonna cut metal) adjust it until the black soot swirlys go away, & then heat the metal around the dimple for a few seconds, then using the washcloth soaked in cold water, apply the cold washcloth directly over the dimple dent as soon as you pull the torch away. Practice first so you know how long you can hold the torch near the paint before it starts to blister. If done correctly, as soon as you apply the cold washcloth to the hot metal, you will hear the metal "POP" back to its pre hail damage position. Easy peasy! There are videos out there too on you tube if you want to see someone else doing it first. I've been doing it for years with excellent results!

Just took my son's 2013 Elantra into the shop. He complained twice about an engine tick and they replaced his timing chain. Tick still there. I took it in and they stated that they would like to do a oil change with a Hyundai filter. I said if you think an oil change will fix that noise go ahead. The next day they called and said I need a new engine. It's covered under the 100,000 power train warranty. Drop the oil pan and see if you have metal in it. Probably piston slap.

Looks like the timing chain jumped a few teeth. Compression at all cylinders. Sounds like a timing issue.

the noise you're hearing is probably the high pressure fuel pump. They are annoying loud especially once they get quite a few miles on them. Pretty easy to replace, just make sure you replace the cam follower too. This comment is 5 years late i know, but for anyone watching that's the sound you're likely hearing. Just keep up with your maintenance and don't treat it like a sports car and it'll keep chugging along.

My 2013 GDI 1.6 is doing the same thing @85k. MPG is down to 20! (usually closer to 40.) I'd like to buy a lower mileage used engine and replace what I have, but I'd need someone to do the work. What's a fair labor price (since this engine is apparently easy to swap out)?

Frank Oros: Great question! Since these are supposed to have a decent warranty, I’d definitely push for them to do it as it’s not an uncommon thing. If that doesn’t work, take it to a reliable mechanic and begin negotiations. Cost is going to vary depending on where you are.

The noise sounds like upper valvetrain, timing chains usually don't knock like that they rattle. Variable valve timing solenoid or a valve guide issue. My mom's '18 Elantra has 35k miles and is already making rocker noise. Must be a Hyundai thing.

It's a direct injection engine clean the valves and it's fine as long as it hasn't been permanently damaged from the carbon chunks!
