THE most important reason to shuffle your hand is to reduce the chance of your opponent following what card went where. For example, if you pick up a land from the top of your deck and play it straight away, your opponent now knows that you DIDNT draw a counterspell/removal spell, thus massively impacting his next move. If you shuffle your hand after drawing he has no way of knowing for sure if you just drew the card or were holding it.

Magic isn't that complicated. There are only 2 kinds of cards, lands and spells. You use lands to cast spells and then there are multiple types of spells in various categories. Learning when and how to interact with the different spells is the key to playing magic.

Legacy/Vintage - All of the best cards in Magic history put into a drafting format. It's really sweet to play - We have one down at my local club which is mostly foiled and it is great to get drunk and play Cube. Also, a way to tell that it's not Modern: you see a lot of OLD cards, like Basalt Monolith

Well there is the stack. [The Stack} (A spell or ability doesn't resolve (have its effect) right away - it has to wait on the stack. Both players get a chance to play an instant or an activated ability in response. If a player does, that instant or ability goes on the stack on top of what was already waiting there. When both players decline to play anything, the top spell or ability on the stack resolves.)

This is cube draft. So bacsically any card from magic can pop up here. Someone builds a cube of mtg cards and then all the players draft from those cards. It is an extremely fun format because gigantic plays can happen.

no you arent looking for a land... when you have a card that taps for mana, it adds one mana of that type to your mana pool.... it doesnt mean to look through your cards... if you have trouble there are plenty of tutorials out there to help you out

Hello, the sets you'll want to check out are Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, M13, Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash and Dragon's Maze, which is the current "standard" format, the decks that are proven to be good these days are the following: Red/Black/Green Midrange Black/White/Green Reanimator Red/White/Green Aggro Red/Green Aggro Red/Black/White aggro/midr. But there are many things that are good,looking up decklists on big Magic sites like Channelfireball or StarcityGames will be good

Well you can't counter it until you see it and just because it's touching the table doesn't mean that the person has passed priority. At this level people like think a lot about what their doing so it seems like a creature has been played when they're actually still thinking if they want to respond.

sometimes its just a nervous habit. but inorder for it to not be a "tell" (as it is in poker) they do it all the time so it doesnt show they r nervous of say a counter spell or something.

This is true .. but you would find after doing it many times you just start to do it habitually. Then when you're waiting for your opponent to do something (especially in high level tournaments where you can cut tension with a peice of floss) you gotta do something to keep your cool, you just naturally start shuffling the cards.

Control seems to be really big. Some recent top decks are Jund, Junk Rites, Naya, Aristocrats, W/G Humans or some other B/_ humans, Wolf Run Bant, and Gruul Aggro. But those are just some popular decks, they don't always work. If you want to find some go to TCGplayer

If you didn't already know, magic has a stack where the last thing played goes first, so here is how it went,I 1.Attack jayce, 2. Cast Vines of Vastwood(its the lowest part of the stack) 3.Lightning bolt before the Vines Resolves, 4.Lighning bolt resolves which would kill the eldrazi, so finkle Sacrifces it for the (1) colorless mana it gives to play karn
