I got same issues on my Toyota yaris 1.3 vvt-i 2014 and my old Toyota Corolla 1.3 vvt-I 2004 same engine it was engine starter minor problem the starter mechanical parts needs grease lubrication

starter issue. same with my car...every morning when i start the car. after replacing the starter. its gone.

It's was an easy problem the starter motor needs only a lubrication greases

Yes after the starter was replaced the sound went away

I have that same problem noise. Mechanic said it was the starter , but if it keeps starting why replace it. He said until you have to turn the key multiple times then it’ll be time to replace . He said just save up money lol and bring it to the shop

it will actually damage over time. you should replace it or at the very least put grease.

You have 2 posible problems: 1) starter bendix does not disengage. 2) vvt-i sprocket. Personally, i think is starter bendix.
