That David is a nauti buoy! There is a good reason for the tradition of having the helm at the starboard side of a boat, and I can testify to that as a former commercial fisherman on the North Sea of Denmark: You of course especially have to keep an eye on traffic on your starboard side, which you got to give way to, while the portside traffic got to give way to you. On a sailing vessel, if the wind push you into the portside, you would have a real hard time even seeing to the starboard side, if your helm were to the portside. All old-fashion fishing vessels here in Scandinavia however also all had a sail and also small freighters until a century ago, even though they were motor boats. The sail had no purpose as propulsion, but simply acted as stabilization of a typical round bilged boat type, that could sail the rough Northern seas and carry a heavy load on top. Essentially, in rough winds and sea the wind would push the boat down in a keel, which actually helps a round bilged boat type kind of plowing it's way through the waves. So, in that situation, if the helm is at starboard side, you can keep watch on the traffic, that you have to give way to in comfort no matter what, but if it were at portside, you would have to leave the helm and comfortable skipper's chair to have a lookout. In a modern sleek vessels this tradition of course now has no purpose really, both because you would not take a sports cruiser like that one out in rough seas like that, but also because explorer yachts and also modern fishing vessels of steel today has stabilizers and are build to sail very differently today, never got round bilges and never sails to force them into a keel like that in rough seas. Today you could essentially have you helm at any point in the boat, where you got a view to all sides. Actually, many modern trawlers, for instance, got a standing helm position to one side and a seated helm to the other side. The standing is typically the one to the starboard, which also is the one, where skipper overlook operation of all the hauling gear for the trawls and such things.

"Starboard" derives from an Old English word we might also express in modern English as "steer board", board in this case meaning the side of a boat. (As in "aboard", meaning you between the sides.) This was the side of the boat you steered from, with a specialized oar as a kind of simple rudder, and it was always on the right in old Germanic cultures. And that's why the opposite side is called port, since you'd tie up on the side where the steering oar wasn't. Until the 19th century another word for port was larboard, "loading board", the side on which you loaded goods. It was permanently dropped in favor of port because "larboard" and "starboard" were too easy to confuse in loud conditions. So putting the helm on the right is almost a kind of tradition, although I don't know if anyone thinks about it that way anymore.

There is a lot I like about this boat, the basic layout of the accomodations and the use of space for an 11 year old 55 footer. I am not a big fan of that small galley down, my preference would be a galley up (yes, I know this would take away space from the salon) and to have an en-suite for the third cabin instead. But as always, buying a boat requires compromises and I would definitely take this in consideration if I were in the market for a yacht at this time (and itcwould be on the market in Europe rather than the US).

Before the launch of your Bering yacht, you should do a tongue in cheap instructional video on conduct at sea - sort of a NBBL of nautical etiquette. Rico can show us how he avoids instability when he creates a playlist that does not rock the boat too much but just enough. He can also show how he checks out the opposite sex when hidden behind a pair of Nautistyles sunglasses. Victoria can show how to create a James Bond - shaken not stirred - martini with just the right moves. Then she can demonstrate how to save water and effectively use space by cleaning a partner’s back in a 2 person shower. A little editing can show that Nick was not stealing Victoria’s red hat as a fetish item but rather to cover David’s sunburned English head when he was at a Riveria yacht show. You can reveal whether Alexei is actually serving Turkish coffee or hiding Turkish Raki or Russian Vodka in the coffee cups. Finally you can show your Bering design team in hard hats and swimsuits measuring the length of the cushions on deck.
