Like Parnelli Jones once said about the disadvantage of the boss 302's lack of low end power , "I'm not at a disadvantage, because I never run under 5000 rpm's".

@GHIGboss - I'm just thankful for being there in the mid 60s and into the 70s at Lime Rock Park. Little did I realize that I was watching in person races that will become historic for many reasons. Mark, Parnelli, George and the gang were some of the very best road racers one would ever see. 🏁🏁

@@Loulovesspeed I'm from Connecticut, been to several races at Lime Rock, but the thrill of a lifetime came in 1970 when my grandfather took us to a Trans Am race at Bryar Motorsports Park in Laconia, N.H. I remember rooting for Parnelli Jones in his Boss 302 Mustang.

THE large 2 1/4 " intake valves and huge intake ports is what steels it's low ends away from the BOSS,but makes it a monster on the HIGH END!! That is most of road racing is 4000, to 7800rp's.
@ednorton18535 жыл бұрын
If its factory valve sizes, 1970 was a 2.19 intake, and 1969 was a 2.23 intake. My dad ran one in H1 mod production in NHRA drag racing. 9600 rpm thru the traps 9200 at a shift.

It's too bad no one could really run the line they wanted to into the toe of the Boot with all of that oil dry out there. And, he really has to pedal that thing going up through the Esses. I've only driven 4 cyl cars at Watkins Glen, and you can just short-shift and mat it in 4th gear after you turn in at the bottom of the hill and just jam in a lower horsepower car, then shift into 5th at the corner worker's station in the right-hander that leads onto the back straight. Man, that's a lot of traffic to work through. Once he cleared the traffic you could really see he could finally run the line he wanted to. That is def a quick car, and great audio!

@alanhardman24476 жыл бұрын
@@jfsssp - That's a close-ratio Ford toploader, and it's the easiest-shifting 4-speed of its era. If you think this is fast shifting, check out the Super Stock NHRA A, B, C, and D classes. Those guys shift a four-speed quickly enough to make it sound like a really tight automatic or a Formula 1 electronic trans. Bang shifting is a REAL skill.

the high tech engine in the ford gt may be good in their eyes but as a ford guy, this engine would have been much better, sounds awsome and they kick ass.
@Loulovesspeed3 жыл бұрын
@edward myinychuk - No one will argue that the V8 sounds better, but it is larger and weighs more which would necessitate a completely new (and larger) body/frame combo. Ford wanted to keep this car very light from the start and the TT 3.5 V6 already had several years of successful racing in a prototype class, so it was a proven power plant. Add to that the fact it was designed to run in a class that has its output regulated for competitive reasons, and there was no need for a V8. It pretty regularly kicked the C-7 and BMW M8s asses in the IMSA Weathertech GTLM Class.
@edwardmylnychuk57743 жыл бұрын
thanks for the extra perspective and its good for what it was designed for but for the street and everyday use, i would still go with the v8 engines without the turbos that shorten the life of the engine.
@Loulovesspeed3 жыл бұрын
@@edwardmylnychuk5774 Agreed, and that's why I would prefer the '05 and '06 GT for street use. People tend to lose sight of the fact that Ford built the current GT to race, first, but also to sell a limited number for street use. In racing, it proved clearly that the TTV6 was the right pick as it certainly proved itself capable of beating the V8 and V10 cars. In its 3 year run in IMSA racing, it scored 19 victories and a Class Championship. Actually, I think I would prefer a Superformance built Cobra Daytona Coupe, more comfortable and easier to drive safely and sounds great doing it!

I also owned a new '69 BOSS 302, mine was "calypso coral" with the sports slats. It was off the showroom floor for $4300. Wasn't very impressive until I put a set of "Doug Thorley" tuned headers on it and removed the 6150 rev limiter, that's all it took to make it come ALIVE! But, I had a "need for speed" and traded it for a BOSS 351 a couple of years later. Big mistake! The bigger was not much faster, even with Doug's headers. The '69 was MUCH more fun to drive!
