Hi, Dawn! I am in a really hard moment of discernment right now. I am engaged to marry a man but I keep getting these "deep feelings" about being called to be a spouse of Christ and spiritual motherhood. I love my fiancè and he is a great man but something doesn't feel right. Sometimes I even feel like he is my son rather than my husband because of this sense of closeness I have to God. Sometimes I even feel guilty, like I am cheating on Christ with this man. But as you said, it's really hard for me to let go of the idea of having a husband in this world and a family of my own. Not to mention I don't want to break this man's heart. It's so hard though! I initially tried discerning religious life and just felt no peace in the convents I visited, I was so restless. Living alone scares me, and I am resisting the idea. But this persistant feeling in my heart of being a bride of Christ will just not let me be! Do you have any advice for the situation? I would really appreciate any help.

Dear discerner, I think this conversation would be better had by phone. I think it is good to talk though doubts with someone and see if there’s any important things to work though and consider before walking down the aisle. Happy to set a time to talk with you, just send me an email: Dhausmann@dioceseoflansing.org praying for you

Hey! I really recommend you visiting a coptic convent. Very, very much. I cannot recommend it enough, there should be one in the country. I pray that God leads you there safely. Peace of Christ. (If you would like help finding one and/or to have a general idea upon going, my email is marinetterina@outlook.com)

When I was an EMT student, I had a shift in the ER. A Paramedic gave me two pieces of advice, "Keep your hands out your pockets, and jump in. You can't learn anything by sitting idly by waiting for an emergency to come to you. You have to recognize an emergency and go to it. In the case of discernment, you won't know about the monastic life if you don't take the first step. Or as Lao Tzu once put it, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step."

Hi, Dawn. How do you know when waiting Time Is finished? :)

When God opens a door that brings fulfillment of something you are waiting for and it brings peace in walking through that door. Or when he shuts the door and sometimes provides a new one to walk though. Or...if you are waiting and there is a peace about staying on that path, in that wait that you feel like you are called to and have the grace for - that is another sign you are to keep on the path. Desire, patience, and peace should be there in the waiting. I hope that helps.
