Really appreciate the information. As a side note, you might want to seriously consider using jack stands instead of relying on the jack the car includes. You DO NOT want to be under that vehicle if that jack fails for any reason. (Plus the jacks included with most vehicles aren't necessarily engineered for anything more rigorous than a tire change.) Still, good video!

I admire your innovation...I am a farm kid and make tools and helper pieces out of all kinds of things to get a job done, but the jack trick to get the drain plug loosened would be concerning to me, especially with lack of good support holding the vehicle up. You could also take a long piece of pipe, and slider it on your ratchet, and make a "cheater bar" that would give you excellent leverage and be much safer and give you more control. Just my kind and humble opinion. :-)

Simply replacing the same volume of fluid that was drained is not the correct procedure. There is a check bolt near the drain bolt that needs to be removed while filling the transmission. When the fluid comes out of the opening where the check bolt goes the level is correct. A new crush washer should have been installed on the drain bolt and torqued to specification. Never crawl under a car with a scissor jack supporting the car. The hack where you used a scissor jack to loosen the drain bolt was dangerous. A part of the tool could fly like shrapnel when it breaks loose. Or you could damage a car part.

NEVER go under a car without a jack stand. NEVER use an OEM fix-a-flat stand to hold your car up. And absolutely NEVER EVER do that nonsense with the jack to pry open your drain plug while you are under the car. The jack can pop away, or pitch the ratchet with the force, or even cause the car to get unsettled enough to fall and crush you underneath the car. And it's always a good idea to tighten the drain plug properly before refilling from the top side.

@willacewallace59054 жыл бұрын
I know this is old... However, to ensure the fluid is actually full, there is a full overflow port above the drain plug on the trans. The proper way to fill is to remove said bolt in the port and fill with fluid until the fluid begins to flow out. Once that occurs, trans is full. This should be conducted on a level surface without then use of jacks or any tilting of the vehicle. Also, the filter located inline of the trans cooler should be replaced as well.

Would that be a full flush of trans oil? Because many people have said that is not the thing to do
@willacewallace59054 жыл бұрын
@@LanceH134 No sir. The video shows one of two methods in the service recommendation: drain and fill with inline filter replacement (video left that out or did not do the filter). *Every 45k miles a drain and fill with in line filter replacement (just shy of 4 quarts HCF-2 trans fluid) 135k miles a flush and fill with both filters replaced, roughly 10 quarts of HCF-2. One pickup filter in pan and the in line filter located on the trans cooler lines. With this CVT type, yes change the fluid per the Honda recommendations. This isn't a friction plate type of transmission, rather a steel belt with approx 1500 individual spline sheets of steel riding a dual steel belt core. This belt rides between two differential sized pulleys actuated by centrifugal force. The input shaft then enters quasi gear mesh that mimicks 'shift', but is computer timed. Honda perfected this CVT setup. In 2015 and earlier models they had issues. The issue being output shaft size was under designed. Honda didn't issue recall, rather reprogrammed the computer to soften clutch cycles. The biggest enemy of the CVT setup are males between the age 16 and 25 who bolt on horsepower generating gadgets to the engine and drive like simpletons. CVTs are not designed to handle 0-230hp jumping off a line.

Bought a brand new 15 accord sport. It has 60k now. Last maintenance was done today: changed oil, oil filter, cabin filter, air filter, battery, new front pads (rear ones were changed 5k miles ago) , changed brake fluid and rotated tires. Never changed cvt oil/ spark plug/coolant, belts.. what is your suggested maintenance that still needs be done to be on schedule with the recommended accord maintenance?
@FlyBeee4 жыл бұрын
You are doing awesome maintenance of your car!! As for transmission fluid, I recommend one drain & fill every 15k miles. I know thats aggressive but here are my reasons: I changed mine at about 48K miles as as you can see in video and read in the description the fluid came out was dark brown and had 'burnt oil' smell. I did the video in March 2016 and then summer 2016 Honda issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) to dealers that the CVT deteriorates fluid much faster and to change fluid sooner than 50k miles which is what Maintenance minder says. One drain and fill removes less than 50% of fluid so by doing this every 15k miles I keep relatively fresh fluid in my vehicle. My Accord now has little over 110K miles and i follow the 15K change interval. Thats just my 2 cents. Please also see my other videos on this model accord especially the one on PCV valve / engine oil consumption issue. Best wishes!

Can I use use an oil extractor with small tube into a dipstick to suck out most of the fluid? I used it for regular oil changes.
@FlyBeee8 жыл бұрын
Sounds doable but I've never tried it. I would say that there are benefits of draining the fluid out because all gunk drains out with it, and the drain plug has magnet to catch metal scrapings & particles. As you see in video here the magnet on the drain plug was very dirty (was black) and I cleaned it up before pouring in new fluid. You may miss out on these extra benefits of draining the fluid.
@jamescc20108 жыл бұрын
Should I drain and fill 3 times after driving each refill, or one drain/fill is enough?
@FlyBeee8 жыл бұрын
do 3 drain and refills, but space these out over a few weeks or more depending on the miles and age of your car. If your car is under 5 yrs, 50K miles then do the fluid change over 3 weekends. But if you have more miles / years on the car then introduce the new fluid slowly over several a few thousand miles. Reason: new fluid has cleaning agents that can dislodge any gunk and metal particles that had deposited in the old fluid. This floating debris can actually damage your transmission. If you are in latter situation then read up on this more online and/or talk to honda service techs for advice.

Yes, this is the proper way to change the fluid. There is no dip-stick to check fluid level but there is an overflow bolt located just above the drain bolt that would flow out the extra fluid. I'm a little confused here. One drain and fill will use almost 4 quarts? Or three drain and fills will use almost four quarts? I just realized i probably need this badly, so will drain and fill three times in a day probably. do i just need to drive around the block to fully circulate the new fluid?
@FlyBeee4 жыл бұрын
Good question. One drain and fill requires 3.75 quarts (bottles) of HCF-2 transmission fluid therefore you need 4 bottles (4 quarts) of new fluid before doing drain and fill. If your car has at least 30,000 miles then it needs its transmission fluid changed. Do one fluid change now and then wait a week / about 200 miles and then do the 2nd fluid change. A word of caution: if your car has lots of miles (60K or more) then its transmission is now used to dirty fluid. New transmission fluid with strong cleaning properties may shock your transmission and may damage it, so introduce new fluid slowly ; which means do one drain and fill and then drive about 2 -5 k miles to allow your transmission to get used to the new fluid then do the 2nd drain and fill. Same for your brake fluid, keep it clean and change regularly. Good luck.

Attach an extension to the bottom of the wrench to increase the lever arm distance from the pivot point. This increases your leverage and thus the force applied to the bolt using a smaller amount of effort on your end.

Quick question, why do you do the 3rd drain and replace? I understand that it should be drained only once every 30,000 miles.
@FlyBeee8 жыл бұрын
Thats a really good Q! Honda actually says to *Replace* the fluid every 30,000 miles. Then Honda also says 'don't flush the transmission' and that doing this will dislodge / loosen dirt & grime which would harm the transmission. So drain & fill ends up being the only viable choice. First drain & fill replaces about half of the transmission fluid, 2nd drain & fill gives you about 75% new fluid, and 3rd drain & fill gives the vehicle about 90% new fluid, and so on. As you can see you get the most benefit from 1st drain & refill. Some people do one drain & refill every 10K miles, others do 2 drains & refill every 15K miles. You can select the interval that works for you.

@FlyBeee8 жыл бұрын
+angleshero The quantity of fluid that drains out depends on whether the car is on flat surface or an angle, and if the transmission was cold or hot at time of drain because transmission fluid expands w/ heat. Your best bet is to use a drain pan that has measurement markers on it. Measure how much fluid came out and put back in the same quantity. I drained the transmission fluid on my 2013 accord sport for what appears to be the first time at 50k. 4.5-5.0 qts of fluid came out. I put the recommended 3.7 in but now i'm wondering if it wasn't enough. I've read a million forums and some people say to just refill the same amount that came out. Others say it's always possible that too much was put in to begin with, so it's not necessarily good to just fill the same. Am I safe adding 3.7 qts and just assume that they just way overfilled it? Is it possible that more than the normal drain/fill amount of 3.7 came out? I read the entire transmission has a capacity of around 6 qts so i'm wondering if somehow more than the normal amount came out. Pulling the checkbolt isn't possible without a lift, which I don't have. Any advice would be awesome, thanks.
@FlyBeee7 жыл бұрын
The most imp thing is to replace the dirty transmission fluid with the new one, which you have done. It is okay if you are a little under the optimal level. Also, fluid expands when it is warm therefore if 4.5 qts of warm dirty fluid came out then I would put at least 4 qts of room temperature fluid back in and won't worry too much about being a little less. For peace of mind you can open the checkbolt but would need jack stands to lift the car. Sears often has 2-ton and 4-ton jack stands on sale around $20+ for the pair.
@h2000l7 жыл бұрын
1) There is a check bolt (part # 90024-P1V-000) that you need to remove. When the car is level, remove the check bolt and fill the transmission until fluid starts to flow out of the check hole. Then transmission will then be filled with the proper amount of fluid. 2) Then then level needs to be checked once again. Start the engine, shift to all "gears" P>R>N>D>S>L>S>D>N>N>P, for 3 seconds in each "gear", turn off the engine and repeat 1).
@FlyBeee7 жыл бұрын
The checkbolt is the only option :( I would recommend to buy a pair of good jack-stands, these go on sale quite often especially at Sears which recently had 4-tonne jack stands for $20 - which will serve you well.

how do you know when its time for the transmission fluid needs to be changed
@FlyBeee7 жыл бұрын
At about 50K miles the Maintenance minder would say it is time to "replace" the transmission fluid which means several drain and fills. I simply do 1 drain & fill every 15K miles, ends up being the same as 3 drain and fills at 50k miles, and as a result the car drives well :)

Those scissor jacks are notoriously unstable. Never crawl under a car that is supported solely by a single unstable jack. If you value your life, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use jack stands in addition to any jacks you use. Also, much easier than using a second jack to push up on the ratchet would be to use a breaker bar or slip a section of pipe over your ratchet to increase the leverage. When you reinstall the bolt use a torque wrench to torque it to proper spec and it will come off easily next time.

Great video! Thanks! Another way to ensure that the transmission is filled up correctly, is to use the check bolt (at least on '13 Acccords). I have some documents that show a check bolt that when you remove it, the transmission fluid should should drip from that hole 'gradually' to let you know that you are at the right level, and don't have any leaks. I'm thinking it would be a good idea to do this after you refill it, as a double check. Thanks again!

Like 'Nes One' recommended, you can call your local Honda Parts store and confirm. When I buy transmission fluid from my local honda stores they usually give the drain bolt washers for free. I have found that old washers are still decently usable. Therefore, when doing a 2x or 3x drain & fill I would install the new washer on the last fill only.

Congratulations on your purchase! It is a nice car and it runs fantastic with just a bit of care - About the fluid history, when you say 'no history of' does it only mean you have no record of it? I say that because carfax report these days also has maintenance history or at least name of the shop where vehicle was serviced and you can call that place and get a copy of the work that was completed on the vehicle. If you have absolutely no history then it all goes to your decision on whether you want to take a chance and slowly start replacing the fluid and space out the changes or not touch the vehicle at all. On my Accord when I don't change the fluid for 20K miles it becomes noticeably dirty and has burnt smell to it. If your vehicle has clean fluid then may be it was changed and someone may have done it through DIY that never shows up on carfax. Similar to all the work i do on my vehicle would not show in carfax or a 'shop receipt'.

If you review 2013 accord on CarComplaintsDOTcom most of transmission issues in this year/model accord happened around 100K miles. If your Accord is not having issues then it certainly saved you from large expense. However, it can also mean that issues may be just around the corner. If transmission fluid has never been changed then many times changing it for the first time after 170K miles can cause issues. If you are looking to replace this vehicle then may be good idea to look for a replacement soon vs. putting money into this car. Your call on how you would like to proceed. @@boyssansiro5614 The fluid change depends on the miles you have on the car. under 50K miles you are okay to change for the first time. Around 50K miles the Maintenance Minder on the car asks to change transmission fluid for the first time. If your car has more than 50K miles then perhaps your car's service shop changed the transmission fluid already? It would be odd if the shop reset Maint.Minder without doing the required maintenance. Please call them and confirm. If you bought car pre-owned and don't have any history then run a CarFax report - these days it shows maintenance history. Even if it shows shop name , you can call that shop and confirm whether they changed transmission fluid. If you have absolutely no history then you have to decide whether to go forward with the fluid change or not. I would recommend to replace your car's transmission fluid right away. Replacing the fluid is exactly that: replace the entire fluid that requires about 3 fluid changes. Buy a case (12 bottles) from local honda dealer then do one fluid replacement now, another a week later, and a third at 80K miles. Be prepared to see black fluid with burnt smell. Honda's maintenance minder typically says to replace fluid at approx 50K mile. I recently read that there is a TSB which says 2013-2017 accords degrade the fluid very fast. Personally, i do 1 fluid change every 15K miles to keep fresh fluid in the system. good luck

But in 2016 honda issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) that the transmission on this model accord degrades the fluid much faster therefore to change fluid sooner. Just google the TSB and you will find it, or read reviews at carcomplaintsDOTcom about transmission failure on this accord. At Honda dealer the fluid change costs $125 - $150. If you do it at home it is only 4 bottles of fluid at $35 total. Thats a small maintenance expense to keep your new Accord running well. Be sure to use Honda transmission fluid I show in the video. Good luck. When you get a chance also see my other videos about this model of Accord especially one about Engine oil consumption issue at 90K miles.

What specific cvt oil is recommended? I drive 2016 honda accord sport
@FlyBeee4 жыл бұрын
I use Honda CVT transmission oil / fluid and would recommend the same. Can't go wrong with Honda's own fluids! There are two types of Honda CVT fluid: the fill plug on your car would show the fluid your car needs or any Honda dealer's parts can provide this info over the phone (or on website) if you give them the VIN#. There are a few Honda dealers around where i live and one of them would either have special pricing on fluids or have a % off coupon for Honda parts. I take the coupon to the nearest dealer and 99% of times they would accept other Honda Dealers coupon :) Or I would just ask them (over phone) if they have a discount, and 99% they would drop the price 20% Sometime Amazon has best prices and I would recommend to select a Honda dealer as 'seller' just to be sure you get Honda genuine parts. Checkout the description of this video on links to parts. I hope this helps.

Good catch!! To keep video short I just trimmed out the repetitive pouring of bottles but noted in the video description that 3.7 Qt is needed and i presume viewers can see the empty bottles in the video as well. Good question though!

Hi, thanks alot for this video, i have honda accord 2015 cvt, the kilometers right now is 35000km, and sometimes i feel the transmission is jerking, do i need to change the transmission fluid to fix this problem?
@FlyBeee6 жыл бұрын
You may still be under manufacturer's warranty so I would recommend to contact Honda dealer and have them look at the issue. At 22K miles or 35K kilometers a honda should not have transmission issues. However, at such low miles your accord is probably still in warranty. In any case, if you would like to change the transmission fluid then yes, it could help .

I have a question, how many miles do I need to change the HCF-2 on the CVT transmission for the Honda Accord?
@FlyBeee5 жыл бұрын
Change it every 15K miles. The maintenance minder in the car will recommend it at about 50K miles. But Honda has already issued a TSB and I quote verbatim "transmission fluid deteriorates quicker than expected" ... which means if you wait till 50K miles you would likely have damaged the transmission already. Its about $35 for a HCF-2 change at home and it takes only 10 mins. Do it every 15k miles vs risking transmission failure. Just my $0.02 of recommendation.

Can you use all 4 qts?
@FlyBeee4 жыл бұрын
Car can take all 4 quarts but it will overfill the transmission. Honda makes its own transmissions and it has been its weak point for many years so I will recommend to not over-fill transmission. If you have already filled 4 Qts then please drain out the excess by opening up the Over-flow drain bolt which is located right above the Transmission fluid drain bolt. Stop this video at 1:33 counter, and see the small bolt facing down - this is the over-flow drain bolt. Best of luck

Hey bro you engine is so clean, how many miles did you did this? Is it still clean like this? Mine have some oil get out from the gap of the engine, wondering that’s normal or not
@FlyBeee3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think the car had 50K miles when I made this video- it was five years ago so my memory may be off a bit. Engine is clean most likely because I use 'engine cleaner' in the self service car wash, lol. The car now has about 121K+ miles on it and engine is still decently clean. BUT, around 90K miles the car started consuming oil and engine's valve cover gasket started leaking oil so the engine looked messy. I replaced PCV valve and made a video about this (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3OxgH-ufZyenpI) in the video you can see the messy engine. The PCV valve replacement helped fixed the oil consumption issue. How many miles are on your Accord? Have you had any oil consumption / burn issue?
@natehiger4103 жыл бұрын
@@FlyBeee Thanks for the reply. Mine is around 73k now, I did notice the oil drop a little bit on the dip stick, but for every 7k miles oil change it never go blow the bottom dot (i usually fill the oil to the mid point instead of top dot). And there is no oil drop on the ground so i guess no leaking. But the gap of the engine have some dirty oil I have to clean it like every 6 month. I accidently fill too much oil for the 50k oil change, I remove the extra oil about 200 miles later. And since then I notice the gap have some dirty oil built up, any suggestion? Thanks.
@natehiger4103 жыл бұрын
@@FlyBeee You said the engine's valve cover gasket started leaking oil but you change the PCV valve, did you change the cover gasket as well?
@FlyBeee3 жыл бұрын
The Earth Dreams engine in this Accord has oil burn issue, it consumes oil and that burnt oil clogs the PCV valve which then causes extra pressure in engine head and the valve cover gasket would start to leak. You won't see oil drip on the ground, just that engine area would get oily, fuel consumption goes up, and mpg drops. There is a class action law-suit on Honda working its way through the court system. When you get a chance please review the narrative/description of the PCV valve video replacement video (link shared earlier) it has some addnl details. May be your vehicle is starting to develop this issue. Keep an eye on oil level often and replace the PCV valve to see if it helps. It pretty much fixed the issue for me. I also replaced the valve cover gasket after changing PCV valve.
@natehiger4103 жыл бұрын
@@FlyBeee I feel like my mpg almost remain the same but the low speed accelecation is not so good recently, do you think that's also relate with oil buring or PCV stuff? why you didn't replace the filter 25450-p4v-013
@FlyBeee7 жыл бұрын
It's a non serviceable item. Honda / Acura transmissions of past years have failed due to dirty fluid and excessive heat, not due to dirty filters. however you can replace the filter if you feel strongly about it.

Vehicle's maintenance minder would come on at about 45,000 miles, but you can see in video that at 45k the fluid was really bad. In past models it was change out entire fluid (3 drain & refills) every 30,000 miles . I do drain & refills every 15K miles to keep fresh fluid in the car. You are free to decide for yourself.

How can check the transmission fluid without a dipstick like other model? 🤔
@FlyBeee5 жыл бұрын
As you have said, there is no ‘dip-stick’ per se! But you can still check the fluid level. Pause the video at 1:33 count. The screw above the trans fluid drain bolt is the ‘over-flow’ screw. Open it, If the fluid drips from the over-flow opening it means the car has the correct fluid level.
