Each iaidoka has to perform 3 katas of seite iai (decided by the tournament organizers) plus two katas of koryu (choosen by each iaidoka). Am I right?

I practiced Iaido for 8 years and never found it boring. But I never really accepted it being a competitive art. It should be a tool used to cultivate awareness (zanshin) and the Japanese sense of aesthetics. Competing one form against another just felt weird. It still feels weird.

Its not meant to be useful. It used to be but not anymore. Like many sports in Japan it has become highly formalized and is now more about fine detail and control than it is to be fast and deadly. But bear in mind, these are only Kata(meant to show control and form). other parts of iaido like tameshigiri is where they have to actually cut :)

Iaido is the most beautiful of japanese traditional martial arts. If one does not understand it, is a short sighted creature. Of course the competition can one be with Kata otherwise someone could get sliced. My God, this is fully understandable. I practising myself Shotokan Karate and I must recognize for my mental health that Iaido is the King. Can someone think that tameshigiri is effective with a two days work? For all even sake why this peolple does not read a little !

Ray Lee Iaido as a spot is katas... iaido in its original form was training to kill via unsheathing the sword. Kenjutsu took over once the sword was unsheathed.
@Eduardo-yh3rv
@Eduardo-yh3rv 9 жыл бұрын
+Ray Lee Like most martial arts practice always looks like choreographed, it is design to become muscle memory so when you encounter real danger (absurdly weird chance of it) you can fight correctly. Most fights are just crazy people hitting each other. And actually i think that iaido is the most practical of all because normally the first hit is the one that counts in almost every fighting sport and street fight. Iaido is made to make yoour first or second strike your final.

Proton1 ever heard of an Iaito? Most don't train with a real shinken lol, they're dull blades. Either way, what good would it do you if some hypothetical sword fight broke out? Would you rather sit down and hope you can revert to some gnarly kata thats going to somehow work or actually be able to defend yourself against an enemy?

Ronin 13 Am I ignorant, and do I lack knowledge when it comes to Iaido? Sure, but no amount of additional Iaido knowledge will EVER convince me that this is not boring. I'm allowed to think things are boring as are you. By your logic, if I were to learn more about Iaido, I would suddenly find it to be interesting, and it would no longer become boring... So anyone who thinks Iaido is boring is an ignorant no nothing? No. I don't think so. Iaido is lame... to me. If you like it, cool. If someone likes to do it, then more power to them. I just came here looking at different forms of martial arts that can actually be used to defend oneself and, clearly, this is not meant for defense.

Proton1 perhaps. Perhaps you aren’t intellectually equipped to do well the things that I do well... or to engage well in the hobbies that I engage well in. But so what?! This isn’t a competition. We need each other, brother. We are all deficient in many areas, and we cannot know everything just as we cannot be interested in everything. There’s nothing wrong with saying aloud what you think, and it is not in anyway tied to intelligence. Is there nothing you dislike in the world? For any reason? Are you less intelligent because you dislike it? Of course not. None of that is tied to IQ. It’s personal preference. Whatever my mind and gut tells me, I have no choice but to go with it. I’m not going to go against myself. Perhaps there’s a reality in which I find this (Iaido) appealing, perhaps not, BUT it has nothing to do with intelligence. You aren’t less intelligent because you initially think something is boring.
