doing a drain and fill with the new Motorcraft yellow to replace the specialty orange that has 106000 miles on it. I will do this a couple of times and then at the next oil change to change out the almost all of the old coolant. Dilution is the solution.

Gotta run the heater. Airs trapped is why half went in. If there's no bleeder port you gotta bleed cap off.

I hooked up a vacuum system to mine and used it to check for leaks and then refilled the system using it. No air in the system afterwards, but still didn't get all the previous orange coolant out. I'll probably do similar to Adam and simply drain the system again and add more yellow coolant till the system is flushed of the orange.

I have used Prestone yellow coolant and a good rust inhibitor and water pump lubricant on all my vehicles sine the 1980s. I also use distilled water as opposed to tap, well or any other water that contains minerals that can create deposits and reduce efficiency of the cooling system, With all the water pump failures on Ford and Lincoln engines you have to ask yourself why the orange fluid was discontinued but I am going to assume it wasn't providing adequate lubrication to the water pump bearings. Prestone is universal in it's qualities to protect all metals, plastic and rubber. I'll stick with it. If the requirements are met everything else is just hype for increased profits. I do appreciate your video for insight on how you do things. When it comes to bleeding the air out of the system I simply leave the fill tank cap off, start the engine and allow the car to idle with the heat set on high. This ensures the heater core will fill and leaves an easy path for air to exit. I continue to add fluid until the engine heats up enough to create a surge back into the overflow reservoir. At the point I quickly put the cap on, turn off the engine and allow it to cool. After that I use the specified bleeding procedure to ensure there is zero air in the system. Whatever works best is the tact I typically try to take. Thanks for sharing.

Good video. Replaced the orange for the new yellow coolant too. But I tried to bleed it the way you did on my wife's 17' Explorer XLT, but the coolant level wouldn't go down, hardly any heat from the heater, and the temp guage just kept going up. So I tried doing it old school by leaving the overflow tank cap off, let it idle for 10 minutes, occasionally revving it up the 2,500 rpm, and saw lots of bubbles coming to the surface, as well it sucked in coolant down quite a bit, and then it would push air bubbles out with some coolant, as well as go down again. But it did work that way. Go figure I guess.
@macker0077
@macker0077 Жыл бұрын
That's actually a good way to do it...leaving the reservoir cap off, running it, and revving to 2500 until the reservoir is topped up and no more air bubbles, which was the problem you had initially (trapped air in system).

So, what is advantage to premixing? How about pouring distilled and concentration directly into overflow tank?

I have a 2010 Taurus With specialty Green mixed with the new Yellow because I ahd frain and fill done about 29000 miles ago. I want to do the drain and fill next week. I can't remember how much my buddy drained and filled it with the last time when he did it for me.

Hey Adam, I know this video is kinda old but if your sister still has her Edge, did you only have to drain and fill twice? I have a Lincoln MKS with the 3.7 which i understand is a very similar engine (appetite for water pumps too) and did she ever end up having an issue with the pump?
@adamanderson8631
@adamanderson8631 Жыл бұрын
Still has it. After i did this i did one more drain and fill at the next oil change (so 2 total) She now has 145k on the original water pump, no issues as of today. I have prepared her for what to look and to possibly replace the water pump as preventive maintenance in the next 10-20,000 miles.

To be more safe you should of flushed it with distilled water until the water coming out of the radiator comes out almost clear. Should take about a good 5+ trys. Then you should of added the full yellow concentrate at the final fill. With about 5 or 6 quarts of water that stay on the block and heater unit and then adding th remaining amount of pure concentrate you would have a almost close 50 50 mix. I know they say they are backwards compatible but I don't believe nothing ford says at this point. I think the total capacity of coolant on the 2013 3.5 edge is 11.7quarts.

@@Brownnproud91 Ford has also told us that the orange and new yellow are compatible, we don't agree. Whenever we get a car in for a coolant flush or cooling system repairs that specified orange coolant, we just flushed it all out and filled it with yellow. We've seen all to often that the orange coolant doesn't hold up.

i agree with you! Dexcool is no good, I'm going to do my dad's taurus but I said what the heck I'll do my mom's chevy malibu because she already lost a water pump! If it works in dexcool systems I'm sure it'll work better in the chevy then the real deal.

I also extracted the orange coolant and replaced with motorcraft yellow on my f150. It turned my coolant pink. It bothered me, so I just flushed it a couple times with distilled water.

The right way would be to flush with a garden hose for 20 minutes with the car running and the drain plug open. Then a quart or two of white vinegar needs to be dumped in next before running 10 ish gallons of distilled water through the system. Last step would be to top off with some concentrated coolant and adjusting the ratio.

Hey Adam, quick late question hahaha, i got the same car, so.. do you recommend me to use the same exact coolant and not any other one? Im from CostaRica and im not that sure if the coolant that the manufacture says tu use, is put of circulation here too, am too scared of changing it not gonna lie haha, so what would you recommend me to do? Great video , and thanks ford reading this message !

I would flush the system and put in a good quality coolant if you can't get the yellow stuff. I know there are other youtubers that really like peak coolant. I would use something you can source easily locally.

if your engine has an internal water pump, do yourself and your wallet a HUGE favor & run Motorcraft YELLOW!! fully flush your system of the previous coolant...run a garden hose with the engine running into your expansion reservoir with the drain plug OUT & once the water going in looks like the water coming out, you're good. At that point, run through 3-4 cycles of distilled water to flush out the hard water. Then, add 100% concentrate to your expansion reservoir, which will offset the distilled water that was left behind your thermostat Once the system burps, add 50/50 mixture or straight distilled water, depending on the climate of where you live and you will be pretty close to 50-50.

@@LTSRIDE24 City tap water from a garden hose is full of minerals, the values depending on your location. This Yellow coolant works best with ONLY distilled water. Not even de-ionized water is the best choice. I drained the orange coolant, then put distilled water in ia 2016 Taurus about 4-5 fill & flush cycles. Then put in the Yellow concentrate coolant. I’d neve flush with city water, just distilled. Now the reservoir is bright yellow.

Just over 11 litres (approx. 3 motorcraft jugs) according to my owners manual (2013 Lincoln MKX. Thing is, you can't get all the old stuff out with the procedure done in the video, and I'm not sure how you can without hooking up a machine that cycles the old fluid out (Dealers have these I believe)

Hello, new owner of a '17 Edge Sport and I'm not car-smart. lol. Took my car to the Ford dealer and they recommended this flush for my car but wasn't considered urgent. I wondered if you were going to continuously do the 'drain and fill' in order to flush out the orange 100% or is this 10-15k mile Coolant Flush considered regular maintenance according to the manufacturer? Doing a coolant flush that often isn't something Ive ever had to do. Im new to the brand and have never done this service on any of my other cars.. Unless I was neglectful. lol

I have done this twice now and i am confident all the orange coolant is out. I will then do a drain and fill every 30-40k and this will help keep the water pump and motor happy.

Boys, Adam is wrong about bleeding that engine. Over by the throttle body/battery area is a hose with a screw plug that turns with a small screwdriver. Loosen to drain old, and loosen to fill with new. It will weep coolant when full, but retighten and test drive to make sure it's full. A new engine, installed, is about $6000. Sorry boys. I'm 69 and learning things ain't like they used to be. Happy motoring.
