Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! My Optima did the same thing two weeks ago while I was away from home. I managed to get it home without a tow, and I started my mad research on how to fix this problem without involving the dealership. My dude pulled the safety plug out to get to the fuse, and he tested it. It still had its original 125 voltage fuse, and the test meter read 0.0(nothing). I tossed that fuse, and replaced it with the 150 high voltage fuse. Voila'! We got rid of the check engine light by unplugging the battery, and letting it sit for a spell after replacing the fuse. Back in business! Thank you again for sharing this video. I'm not down with wasting money, and you saved me from that.

@sirshark1092 Did you test your battery to see if it was bad, too. Maybe it was just the fuse. My Kia Optima Hybrid has been acting crazy and won't start up the car. I don't know if I blew the fuse. My auxiliary battery is putting out 12 volts so I don't think that's the problem.

Thank you so much for this video! Replaced the safety plug fuse with one purchased from eBay ($85). Sonata is working again. Went to the local dealer for the safety plug. Parts guy said item isn't stocked. $325 & 5 to 7 day wait. He also said the safety fuse rarely goes bad, and I need to replace everything (EV battery and all at $$$$$). The 12V battery was bad. Not sure if that caused the safety fuse to blow. So awesome you posted this video. Thank you!!!

Thank you. I’m suppose to go back tomorrow, 5/28/2022 to purchase a 2011 Hyundai Sonata and the engine light was on. The salesman knew nothing! And the energy flow level was near the “low” mark. He called his boss and the boss man says that it gets to high level the more I drive and that it basically charges and powers up while driving. I added extra wire beyond fuse, still occasionally goes into charging system warning situation, once this warning happens, the voltage I measure ACC battery is really low, like 7 volts or something. I don’t understand how does the fuse works? I suspect something in the generator get something wrong, but no clue of it. I believe there is no ACC alternator like conventional car, during the car in drive ready stage even engine is off, the ACC measures over 14 volts. What the hell of Hyundai hybrid system, so unreliable.

Just had the same thing happen in my 2015 Hyundai sonata hybrid. Luckily it was only 2 blocks from home. Tow chain got it home. I'm a professional auto technician/mechanic for 25 years now. I work on all makes all models. I have replaced over 100 high voltage batteries mostly in the Prius and Camry. And have been to more hybrid classes than I ever wanted to attend. I'm going to test the fuse first. If that fixes it? I will probably replace the relay assembly as well and Carry an extra fuse,the old relay that is still working and few tools and some high voltage gloves in the trunk then if this happens on a road trip I can swap out parts in a parking lot or side of the road. I'll get going on this tomorrow starting with fuse and retesting. I also have a snap on scanner with up to date software. I checked battery voltage in every block and all are in spec. And the voltage is just about identical in each block.

Okay, yeah I would suggest you start at the fuse. Chances are it’s the fuse. The good new is it isn’t hard to test at all. It’s really a quick fix.

@@superwhosuperI tested the old fuse it was blown. Had to get the safety switch/plug/ lever that was the only way the hyundai dealer parts department sold it. My old fuse was a 125amp the new one is 150amp there is a TSB from Hyundai and Kia to upgrade to the 150amp fuse. I put the new fuse the car works perfect so far. The high voltage system has to be pulling a few more amps than it did when it was new. I going to check every connection and insect the cables just for my own piece of mind. I did have to clear the code out with the scanner to turn the check engine light off. My car is a 2015 Sonata hybrid limited with 90k on it but I'm not the original owner so I was told warranty was up at 60k. Thanks for the video and the info.

I don’t kno why they gave you a 150amp fuse, but the sonata will be able to handle it. I didn’t have to connect the code scanner, after driving around it went away on its own. But hey look at you Brent. Other people just sold the car/ got rid of it, not you. You choose to look up the problem and fix it and You did it. DIY-ers like yourself is the reason I made this video. No problem. I would suggest you change that fuse after testing it. My car is still going strong. Like I mentioned in the video, I looked high and low to find a solution to this all over the internet. I even called the dealership but neither was that helpful. After diagnosing it, I found out that fuse was the main cause. The dealership wanted me to buy a new relay, a new safety plug and pay for labor. I wasn’t with that. I changed it the same day I posted this video and it’s still running great 😊

Is the fuse bad? potentially. If the fuse is bad, you have to ask yourself why a 125amp fuse blew in the first place. That is not normal and usually an indication that there is a different problem, or a "root problem" if you will.

My guy, you are so right! But a quick tip, buy the higher amp fuse (150 amp) instead of the 125 amp. It appears Hyundai had a design flaw and under estimated the power usage.

No. After that fuse was replaced, the issue was resolved. Hyundai & Kia are the same company but I personally don’t have any experience with Kia. I would suggest you check that fuse if your car has one.

I replaced the alternator, the fuse , not the battery yet but I had the battery tested and they said it was good cause it will start up but it has to have the jumper cables on the car anybody have any suggestions? 2014 Hyundai sonata blue hybrid is the vehicle I still keep having the error code “Check charging system” as the one in the video. I had it towed to the dealer & he said it’s the transmission & for parts & labor it’s $6,000. My mechanic I normally use said it’s not the transmission he thinks it’s a fuse somewhere around the charging system.

I just had the same thing happen. The dealership called me and said it was the safety hybrid plug and it will cost me $499 out the door. I called the parts department in Daytona and they said the part cost $239….and that it was a “risky” do it yourself fix because it has 40,000 volts. I am having the same issue, check charging system warning comes on while driving some times, but after stopping and turning the car off and letting it sit a couple minutes, I am able to start it and drive it as normal for a little while. What was your issue, was it the fuse?

I am randomly getting the "check hybrid system - stop driving" message with all the beeping, in my 2012 Sonata hybrid. However, to this point, it still runs like a new car 99% of the time. I have gotten the message twice in a month. And I just stopped, turn car off, back on, and kept on driving for 3-4 weeks until it happens again. Being that this is intermittent, and not dead in the water, would you still think its this fuse causing the issue? Thanks for any info!

im in the same boat as you. i disconnect the battery terminal it resets. i bought a new battery from dealer today because mine was from 2018 for $240 and it didnt solve the issue. Alarm happened shortly after omw to work. disconnected wire again to reset, drove all the way home no issue. ive watched a few videos now and one said our older cars have a 150Amp relay in it and there was a service bulletin to replace them with the 175amp relay. but the fact that our car still starts and runs most of the time i think the relay is fine and it might be a failing power module that costs a lot more money...

@ryanshryock4243 i meant 125amp was original and now its updated to 150amp*. i hear ya...last time this happened to me was months ago and i had put a trickle charger on my battery to ensure it was fully charged. thats why i thought to myself lets just change the battery...but it still faulted. i just ordered the 150amp fuse...its very easy to replace...i'll try to remember and reply back if it fixes it. one video said the power adapter assembly doesnt break and its usually the fuse so we shall see i guess. i have a 2012 as well with 213k miles...drives just fine except for the hybrid system faulting.

@@seaweedmike I bought the new 150 amp fuse online last week for $40. OEM Hyundai one. I am just carrying it around just in case it blows, since it seems to be an issue. I see its easy to install. But I don't think I will replace it until it blows. A fuse is either blown or its not. Obviously mine's not. My car has 186k on it, but had a brand new transmission put in at 100K under warranty, and a new engine per the recall, at 150K. So I can't get rid of this car! Its still pristine. lol

How do you install the fuse ? I know how to replace the safety assembly but i am unsure on how to replace the fuse.

One more thing. I called tbis service lady about the safety plug and she said the fuse was inside of it? Not sure if that was true considering there was the fuse listed for sale aswell

It’s two clips on the assembly it’s self. Pry them open and pull it off, it will reveal the fuse and two screws.

Wow. Did you check the HV fluid levels? And I would suggest you check the voltage. You have your accessory volts and you’re HV volts. Use a multimeter and you’ll be able to tell.

@@brittanylewis8419 you will need a multi meter. If Yu stay in a apartment Yu can a maintenance man for one. If not you’ll have to buy one. Put it on the resistance setting and if it says 0.00 it’s bad

That fuse is connected to the relay that makes the car run. If that fuse is blown or damaged. It won’t work

I apologize, I’m just seeing this comment. You may have a connection issue. But testing the fuse is the first thing you should do. If you get a chance I would love to hear a update.

Yes. Within it there is a 125a fuse.

It’s going to work. You may need a jump afterwards, but that’s cuz your car battery may have died. Other than that you’re going to be good

With your error, did you just get the 'check charging system' error, or did you also get the 'Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do not Drive' error too? When I get my error I also lose throttle response and can't drive the car. Is that the same issue you had?

Yes. But I also learned that, that was due to how much power was left in the EV battery. But either way this will fix that.

@@superwhosuper Welp, I just pulled out that safety plug to test the fuse before buying one and got perfect continuity, which I guess means I have to get the power relay replaced.

@@RyoGrattius correct. Unfortunately. Your safety plug is good, which means your power relay is bad.

@@RyoGrattius when Yu are replacing it make sure Yu are very careful!!!!! Very careful, Yu can seriously injure yourself. Make sure no wires touch, or touch anything else. Take your time, use black tape to cover up exposed wires.
