There's a program called OpenCore Legacy Patcher which will let you run the newer macOS versions on this and the performance can be quite good especially with an SSD. There's also a way to run up to 10.15 on that really old iMac although it is fairly slow.

You should be able to get newer MacOS versions running on it with the OpenCore bootloader.

Hi, definately replace the aging and slow fusion drive with a SATA SSD. It's worth it!

I dont think Id want to do that. I definitely prefer to reliability of macos over most linux distros

Sk hyinx ssds work best for macs. By far the most reliable after probably 8 different types of drives. Spinning hard drives are, terrible. Spinning hard drives fail in probably 1 or 2 thousand hours on the dot, where apple has made most of its money in tricking people into needing new machines, when its the disc that is crashing, and then slowing down after to unusability. Have not had the sk's fail on me ever. Theyre fast too. I use a 2012 macbook for EVERYTHING. And its keeping up better than my cell phone from the same time. I think its got about 5 more years in it. Apple took a dive in 2015, big time, china black market took over and they produced invasivewear. But the stuff before was gold. And, if you lube the ram socket pins, they free up to make more reliable contact. This is about all you can do with these older machines, besides running cracks on the os which is about 20 percent success rate. The hd makes the biggest difference, pny and samsung and m.2 have failed big time.
