2013 Tiger 800 XC transmission sound?

So I began to hear a different sound coming from the left side of the bike, sounds like an unusual rattling. It all started while riding, I blipped the throttle, the engine failed to raise the rpms and I heard a "clack" noise. The downshift was smooth, did not notice anything odd about the shift, but I then started to hear a new noise while at the light.
Seems like at the beginning of the video, all is fine, no odd noise, but later, when the engine is warmed up and I put it in 1st. that's when the rattling begins.
Bike has 29k miles, serviced by PO when it was supposed to, they did the valve check at 24k and all checked out fine.
Any ideas? Maybe I'm paranoid, I know triumphs are infamous for making weird noises...

I solved the problem with the knocking in the engine! The problem was the engine oil. The engine was filled with a Castrol Power Racing 10W40. I poured a thicker Motul 7100 10W50! All the knocks are gone, the engine is running quietly! I drove only 1000 km on Castrol, apparently it is too liquid for our engine, although it is recommended by the Triumph factory

@@pkhkp Yes, that's right. I installed a mechanical engine chain tensioner. The engine works with it in a completely different way, as if it were a new engine. It turns out that the chain of my engine was rattling, apparently the factory tensioner failed.

But the mechanical tensioner must be adjusted correctly.The chain should not be stretched too much! And yet, after installing the mechanical tensioner, the chain stopped rattling, but the rattling, knocking of the engine on the left somewhere in the area of the cylinder head remained. Not strong, but not completely gone either. Apparently I had 2 sources of noise. I beat one of them by installing a mechanical tensioner, but there is another sound source.

Hello from France. I've got the same noise on my 800 XrX (2016), idem on the left part of the engine. It started at 10.000 km and got even worse with the kms. It occurs after the engine has warmed up. After many requests from me, and during my last control visit (30.000 kms) the garage chief-mechanic finally admitted to hear that noise. They opened the engine for verifications. They even sent a record of that noise to Triumph-France. Triumph answered: "you will not find anything" (?). After the reassembly of the engine they said that everything was normal, the engine ok, and that i had not to worry. Indeed I haven't had any trouble for the time it occured. Just that rattling which makes me crazy when i stop at a cross light. I also suggested to the chief-mechanic a track (that i read on some forums) which is a rattling noise coming from the SAI valves (Secondary Air Injection). He said that the valves were ok, and did not want to remove the SAI system : because will cause malfunction of the lambda probe, removing it is out of law, etc... But I'm pretty sure now (other comments on forums) that the problem is there. I'm going to insist and get that SAI system removed, at another garage if needed.

51.000 kms on mine, does that since 20k i think, mechanic said that all Tigers do that sometimes and is nothing to worry about.

I have found out that the sound is from the clutch basket. There is a lot of play between the primary gear and the aluminium basket. It is the same problem the suzuki dl1000 sv1000 have. Both clutch baskets come from the brand FCC

I have a similar noise and I am inclined to agree with you as the noise quietens when the clutch lever is depressed.

Hello, did you ever find out what the noise is/was? Mine is similar but it's difficult to tell how mine sounds against yours as the camera mike picks up alot of sound. Like a poster below, all this noise smoothes out above 4k revs (actually 3500 revs on mine!)

Hi there, maybe a little of topic, but nice to know for people who encounter a howling noise on their Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 and by accident are watching this video. My motorbike s a Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 XCA, 2016, I exchanged my 1500 Suzuki Intruder two cilinder, for this XCA and after riding a few hundred kilometers, it struck me that their was a very irritating Howl/scream coming from the bike. I googled and viewed some videos. My conclusion, it had to be the skid plate, reflecting the sound from the engine. I covered the inside of the skidplate (there are some video's here on KZbin about this) with caravan tape, but the irritating noice was still there. A benefit from taping the skidplate was that 20% of the engine noise is absorbed, so for the first time I could hear the sound of the exhaust. Then a triumph dealer told me, the noise is coming from the tyres. The Metzeler Touran Next could go for another three thousand kilometers, but with a 10 day trip in the Alps ahead, I choosed to change the tyres for new Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres, which was a good decision, they are wonderful tyres, but the irritating howl was still there. Grrrrrrrr. I removed the radiator guard, I put caravan tape on the inside of the plastic sides, but all didnt work. When riding 80 kilometers/Hour the noise was at a maximum and pulling the clutch, I heard the engine RPM go to neutral rpm reducing the engine noise but 80% of the howl was still there. It had to be the airflow while riding . Last week I examined the engine block, finding that there is a little plastic cap right between the front of the engine and the exhaust pipes. When I knocked on it with a small hammer, I heard a hollow sound looking like to be in the audio spectrum of the howl. Then I putted some caravan tape on it, thus changing the mass and resonance frequency of this plastic cap and tadaaaaaaa..... the irritating noise was almost 100% gone. When I pull the clutch now at 80 km/hour, I only hear the tyres, some wind noise and the engine at neutral rpm. Because I havent found this solution on the internet yet, you are the first to know how to eliminate the howling wolf from your Triumph, to let the Tiger back in again. Please respond if you encounter similar problems and if so, if changing the plastic cap one way or another helped you with this problem. Best regards!

I have a 2014 tiger 800 XC. The mileage is 12,000 km. I was driving along the highway, and the vdur engine rang for 1-2 seconds. I slowed down and everything went away, all extraneous sounds disappeared. But the next day, when I started the bike-it began to work exactly as in this video. A clacking sound appeared. And it is always there, when the motorcycle warms up more clearly. I don't know what to do, how to fix the engine? At traffic lights, when I'm standing, it's very audible, it pisses me off.

mine is making the same noise. The stator/alternator bolts holding the stator to the left side cover were loose. Thats the whining.scraping noise. Pull the side cover, check those bolts, reassemble.

2012, does it since new in neutral with the clutch out. it is just the clutch plates rattling in the clutch basket from the engine's firing pulses. Completely normal.

Mine does it too (2015 XCX). In neutral with the clutch lever out it rattles, i thought it was the basket but if all of you guys have it too i won't worry too much.

I have the same sound on my 800XC as well. Done over 22K km and this seems to be normal. Don’t go hunting for noises when they are seemingly all good. Learned it the hard way owning several thumpers. You have to learn to live with some sounds

Mine is pretty clatter at idle when warmed up and has only done about 6k. Does the noise go when you pull n the clutch?Did the dealer say whether they thought it was 'normal' and if not what they thought it might be?

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure this is the same sound my tiger is making. It's like a rattling, and which seems to go when moving and above 4k RPM. As I only just got mine I'm trying to figure out if it's normal or not. Lots of people have said it can sound like a bag of nails at time.

Good evening guys! I have the same noise on my tiger 800. I bought it with "in theory 13.000kms" i said this because is what the cluster says... But i have doubts being 9 years old. When i bought it, i drove it first and i found it while idle and when gets warm, on the left side too... I went to 2 differents workshops and they say it is ok.
