Thanks for the video man! I will be doing this on my Wife's 2014 Laredo soon. I'm getting a code for Inaccurate 2nd gear ratio, as well as ratio clutch 5 defective; the car has almost 150,000 miles, and the fluid has never been changed. The shift from 1st to 2nd has become increasingly worse, and it actually led to both engine mounts failing, as well as the transmission mount failing all within a couple months of each other. Cheers from Princeton, TX!

I have a great deal of experience with ZF transmissions and there is no need to run the transmission wheels spinning. Just put it gear with your foot on the brake and allow the torque converter to heat the trans fluid. Unless it is very cold outside it doesn't take long to get into the range ZF wants. This works on 5-6-8 spd transmissions. The fill is all the same for them. Without a lift the pan is a PITA to remove and frankly if you change every 50K miles there is little need to change the pan. The car will go over 200K easily with almost no service but drain and fills... Nice job laying on your back.

Would you say the rear has to be higher than the front? I had a shop do my transmission fluid drain and fill on my 2016 JGC and he said it only took 4 quarts. They did it on a lift. He said they brought it down, started the engine, let it warm up then checked the level again and it was still full.

Hi mate, nice video! I’ve done the procedure last week, and worst part was dealing with the exhaust bracket that’s in front of the filling plug. In your video seems that the bracket is in place, how you deal with it?

Nice video! I have a 2014 EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee...Has just over 70,000 miles now and transmission is making a funny sound. Dealer says according to FCA it is a "normal sound". Do you still have your EcoDiesel? If so, how is it running???
@PrincetonProjects
@PrincetonProjects 4 жыл бұрын
Still have it. Running great and there should not be any noise from transmission. Try changing fluid and see what happens. Does it shift OK?

The dealer says transmission fluid is good for life...when do you think it should change every 25k mikes or more like 50k miles? When should the pan and filter be changed or do you think it’s good never need too since sponge filter?
@PrincetonProjects
@PrincetonProjects 5 жыл бұрын
If you change pan and filter then manufacture recommends every 60K. Without the pan and filter, I would do it every 30-40K since you are only replacing about half of the fluid. Ignore dealer. I wish I knew easy way to remove the pan and filter.

No fluid is "good for life". Don't trust that statement they give. Stick to usual maintenance and you will be fine but hey what would I know, I just own a Automotive repair shop.

@@PrincetonProjects Great video, thank you. I just picked up a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 95k on it. I am in the process of replacing the fluids as a new baseline, These steps you show are very good and I know are recommended. I am looking at first to do a hybrid approach, what do you think? I have a very good oil siphon. I was thinking of waiting for the engine and oil to be stone cold (and not running), then run the siphon down the transmission fluid "sealed" tube on the engine and see what I can extract for transmission fluid. I would carefully collect and measure all of the transmission fluid that was extracted (I estimate maybe 2-3 qts max). I then replace it with new/cold ATF+4 at the same fluid amount. It would obviously mix old fluid with new fluid, but also give the oil new life. If that was successful, do it a couple more times, maybe once per week for a couple weeks. I don't see the harm if both oils are measured and added at the same temperature unless I am missing something? Thanks.

I am afraid not because I don't even trust that Jeep filled it right when the car left the factory.

I had the same idea. Have the transmission and the new fluid at room temp. Then drain the fluid, then put the exact same amount in.

Interesting. Does not make sense that filter can not be changed. ALWAYS, loosen fill plug before loosening drain plug. Never want a situation where you have drained and cannot add back because fill plug is fused tight.
@PrincetonProjects
@PrincetonProjects 4 жыл бұрын
I think filter can be changed but may have to remove a cross member on the sub-frame. I am going to try removing the cross member for the next time which is coming really close now! Thanks for the fill plug tip. By the way, you can fill from the drain plug if you are in the bind which is what my MB ML320 has i.e. there is NO fill plug in ML320.

Has any of you guys that’s done a transmission oil change with the pan experience any slipping after you guys did so? I insured that I cycle through the gears while at the determined temperatures and waited for a light drizzle and then plugged it but for some reason I’m starting to slip? I did notice that I had some gunk on the magnets from the old oil pan a very gray slime very fine I’m thinking that the transmission was wearing itself out but never showed any indication that it was giving out until after I had done the oil change. The car was only use on long trips no off-road with only 103,000 miles it has an 8HP 45RE transmission
@PrincetonProjects
@PrincetonProjects 3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest you try the fill process one more time (No drain). You might be simply low on fluid even after following fill directions. Just pump a quart of fluid in and do the gear change-> temp->drizzle again. I suspect you are low if did not experience the slip before. I have another jeep KJ with FJC transmission which loves to stay over filled.

Yes, if you drop the pan then you may be able to get most but to all of the oil. There is always some oil left in the transmission body. Let us know how you drop the pan if you decide to do it.
