The balance shaft is used to counter engine vibration caused by the rotating assembly. All engines have some risk of vibration at any speed, not just idle. It depends on a lot of factors, but natural frequencies and number of cylinder and their arrangement are factors. An inline 6 cylinder is one of the few common setups that is balanced by itself, although firing order plays into that as well. Typically, the harmonic balancer takes care of all the vibration, but some arrangements require additional hardware.

Nice job so far. Now I was told NOT to use the plastic tensioners because of the frequency of failure issues. I have a 02 f150 w/5.4l and I just did the timing chains and when I tore it down it had cast iron tensioners and no colored links on the chains so I’m assuming they were original factory. I bought the Cloyes timing set and I was disappointed to see they came with plastic tensioners. So I bought cast ones instead along with a new Melling oil pump and a new factory water pump, new factory coils and plugs and new injectors. I guess I should have mentioned that the pickup had 225,000 miles and I was getting lean codes along with misfiring codes. So I decided to put some money into it, it’s a real clean pickup so I did t want to get rid of it. I like your videos and wish I found you before I did the work but it’s running great so I’m not disappointed. I to wanted to do a compression test while I had it apart but time restrictions prevented me from doing it. Looking forward to seeing the next video!

your engine is a 2 valve per cylinder. there are some design changed from your earlier engine and this one. i have been using good quality parts (as you see in this video) with absolutely no issues. some argue the plastic is bad to break....on the other hand if cast breaks and gets pumped through the engine oil to all the bearing surfaces.....you now need an engine.

I always mark the bolt that I’ve torqued down so I won’t forget wish one I’ve torqued I use green first orange on the last step. Works for me. Maybe I’ll try the chisel to the bolt mark just to give it a try 👌🏼👌🏼

i dont suppose it matters what way you mark it.....as long as you can tell it has been done. i like the chisel mark only because it wont wipe off.

I have heard of people using the ratchet style chain tensioner from the older 2v. And putting them on 5.4 3v. In order to be less prone to failure. Have you heard of this? Or recommend it?

Good demonstration; and I have only operator serviced not repaired the Deutz air cooled engines on my generators. When I sold the Rental company; in the maintenance department there were The supervisor, ( a HD equipment mechanic) a truck mechanic ( 1/2 ton to 18 wheel custom TT), welder fabricator, machinist , two service technicians, 1 electronic technician. With additional help from the stocking staff. All equipment was checked before being put back into shelves. At this point all equipment including the rolling stock needing service was sent 3 bays over to the service area before being rechecked back into inventory. Those were the good days except for dealing with the banks to keep inventory financing the expansion in excess of 20% per year. When they wanted a safer growth of 5-6% in an industry that was growing at 30-40% per year; and would have opened the market for competition. After I sold to the company to my major competition, ( we each had 45% of the market) a year later; three other large rental companies moved in, 2 from Hollywood and another from Eastern Canada. I still miss it 27 years later. But was burned out by the business end of business and working 80 hours a week average for 30 years. But I am still here and 90% of my peers are gone. The Motion Picture and TV industry is tough. Most don't live to retire. the old guy Bert.

great job JC looks like its coming along well.. i do things a little bit differen when cleaning bolt holes i always run a tap down them first then do the rest of the process exactly the same as you..

I cleaned the threads the first time i put the heads on. i use an old head bolt that i cut 3 vertical slots in like a tap. i put a little grease in the cuts so catch the the junk. the next video is done and i will publish tomorrow morning.

Just did one of these but ran in to a problem. For what ever reason my timing chain resting on the "floating guide" rubs on the bottom of the fixed guide. Any idea why this is happening? (When looking at the engine from the front, this is happening on the left side) Thank you!

I really like the 3 valve setup, but there's a lot of moving parts here...l guess when Ford bought out Jaguar - that's when all this happened...but they did bring the Thunderbird back & we got independent rear suspension with out board brakes...is that balance shaft just on the 1 bank? I like the way you take extra steps & cover all bases...with those rings already having 20 minutes on them - l'm thinking the compression will be good & even...l don't think you'll ever get an LS motor in there, but l like your approach & explanation as you go through these rebuilds...l'm learning/seeing a lot here...come a long way from A block mopars (shaft mounted rockers) & straight line sixes with gear driven cams (no chain)

Any time you put a lube on a bolt to be torqued, You are changing the torque specs. Its lubed, so it goes in easier, bolt gets stretched too far. This is why you don't put anti seize on lug nuts.

JC, have you been inside a 6.2L Ford gas yet? The One I am looking at is puffing antifreeze smoke out the exhaust. Its a 2011 model with 40K. Prob have to break it down for heads/gaskets.

i have not seen any problems with the 6.2 yet. i currently have one with 240k miles on it and going strong. i did hear about one that the crank timing gear stripped the teeth off. i have not heard or seen anything about losing antifreeze or overheating yet. if you buy it be sure to do a video about it. i would enjoy it!

I am with you JC never ever do I re-use headbolts, my motto with headbolts is "one and done", they were used once and they are in the scrap pile if they come out, I dont see how a guy can trust em, are they cheap no, but to have something happen to an engine you just put hundreds or thousands into because you re-used headbolts..no way I will chance that. JC what program are you using for the engine specs etc. I think you may have mentioned it previously but old age is catching up to me and for the life of me I can remember...lol Like you tip about gently using the vice for the tensioners, I am going to be stealing that for the one day down the road where a fella might need it

i have the snap on verus pro and the solus. if i continue to play with these ford trucks i am going to get the ford ids. i borrow a friends from time to time when the snap on wont do what i need. i am not a pro at any of this. i dont have any training so it sometimes takes me awhile to get things figured out. if i go through with it, the new business deal may interfere with my truck projects.

Any engine mechanic or engine builder would never reuse any head bolts or studs that are torqued-to-yield. Engine manufacturers design everything with saving weight and costs as priority, and usually spec every part to maximum yields and minimize size or weight. If you really need reuse bolts, increase the size of the bolts or studs while maintaining the same torque and clamping pressure to reduce risk of stretching the hardware to it's maximum as long as the castings and/or forgings can support the larger thread holes (i.e. 1/2"[13mm] to a 9/16"[14mm] head studs). It's common practice done with purpose made racing engines which are usually rebuilt in a hurry, using the same hardware, after a certain amount of runs or laps during a race or event.

Hey JC I'm putting a 02 v10 back together and the cam caps say 71 foot pounds but at that rate I broke a bolt do you know the right torque is .

thats not 71 ft pounds. i cant remember off hand what it is. my advice is to get a service manual. i have one for the superduty trucks at my other house. i dont have it here or i would look it up for you.
