If you need to clear your drain lines before or after your motor replacement, check out this video:
• 2014 Ford Explorer Sun...
OEM info/link found below.
Thank you for 18:43 of your time! Today, we're going to replace the sunroof/moonroof motor on our 2014 Ford Explorer, as well as initializing the new motor to the vehicle. If you need help with this, then hopefully this will help. This "should" be applicable to all fifth generation Ford Explorers (2011-2019). We also show you the inside of the old motor to see if we discover any water damage or if it just failed on its own. This is an easy fix. It just takes a little time and patience but it'll save you a few hundred dollars doing it yourself, rather than paying someone else to replace it.
Please know that over time, products do get discontinued and therefore the links below will probably turn into dead links. If that happens to be the case and you would love to help me out, leave a comment and either I'll find you a new link to the same product, or link to an alternative product that I trust would benefit you.

Initialization Process: 1.) Open driver door 2.) Turn ignition ON 3.) Turn ignition OFF 4.) Turn ignition back ON 5.) Push "IN" the TILT button then IMMEDIATELY let it go (quick push) 6.) Then push "IN" and HOLD the TILT button until it finishes initializing. The sunroof should move within 10-15 second. NOTES: Let initialization finish before letting the Tilt button go. Once it's done, you can let the TILT button go. When you turn the ignition ON-OFF-ON, do it IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait too long between each one, or it may not work.

Exact instructions, worked perfectly. The only problem I encountered was that I bought an aftermarket motor, a cheap one for $60, before watching your video. That replacement motor did not work, the tilt only opened the sunroof incrementally, and then it wouldn't close properly. The slide button would tilt it up and back down, but it kept it in a "too low" closed position. Then that messed up the shade slide function. So, I ordered the Motorcraft replacement, and voila! Perfect. Moral of the story, don't go cheap and buy the off brand motor. It WON'T work. Thanks again, awesome instructions...

Thanks, and glad you got it back like new again! Yea, I've been hearing and reading more and more lately that those cheaper aftermarket alternative motors have been failing and just not working correctly. Some things are good for aftermarket and some just need to be OEM. Hope you were able to return that aftermarket motor for a full refund. Glad to have been of help.

I bought a refurbished motor from Amazon for 60$. This was a great price since all the new ones ran from 160$ to 300$ depending on the seller. It took me several hours from start to finish to do the job myself. I had to change the Initialization process because the one listed in the video did not work for me. It was a slight tweak, but it worked. On step 4. I had to put the car into Power on mode ( DO NOT ) start the car. If I actually started the car a second time, the process did not work. After trying the initialization process 4 different times without success I did a little more research and found this change. The first time I tried to initialize without starting the car it worked. This was on a 2014 Lincoln, MKS. My driver's side sunroof drain got clogged and the water backed up into the motor. When I took it apart, it looked just like yours. Thanks for the vid.

Yea, some vehicles have slightly different steps but I'm glad you were able to figure it out. And yes, from what I've seen out there, most of the time the driver side gets it first. I really wanted to clean it up and re-solder the connections and see if it was just rust and gunk messing with the connection or if the board really got burned out. I need to look around to see if I kept it.

Thank you for the clean instructions. Most likely my drain lines got clogged and water accumulated ending up corroding and ruining the roof motor. I'm going to tackle it once spring comes out. The weird thing with mine tho is the shade motor works for the rear part, but not for the front, I would think that should be powered by the same motor, but who knows nowadays.
@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
The shade motor should only work with the shade. The glass is on one track and the shade is on another track. If the shade isn't fully opening or closing, then I would start the process of elimination. 1) Check if there is debris getting in the way of the shade moving (not likely since slight blockage will most likely and immediately burn out the motor but doesn't hurt to check); 2) Check your manual or online for the fuse box locations and check to make sure your fuses to the sunroof are good; (not likely since the shade is technically working but doesn't hurt to check); 3) It is very possible that the shade will not work for the front part until the damaged motor for the sliding glass is replaced, first. I'm banking that this is the case with yours.

Hi. Thanks for the video. We have a 2013 Ford Explorer and I think the sunroof motor for the tilt needs to be replaced so I can clean the drain holes because water leaks into the car from the headliner right above the front of the sunroof but just sometimes when it rains. The shade slide motor and switch seems to work fine. But I need the tilt button to work (I assume it is NOT the tilt button switch) so I can clean the drain holes to prevent the leaks. Since the tilt button is on the far left can I assume that would be the left motor (driver's side) I should replace? Also, the car has 190,000 miles and will soon be retired to an occasional use car. So if we want to just stop the leaks in the sunroof and not use the sunroof going forward is there a way to seal the sunroof at the top so the water does not get in at all from the sunroof? This would be a less expensive and less complex fix if it would work. Thanks
@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
Sorry bud, been super busy lately. Yes, the tilt is the sunroof, which is the left motor (driver side), and the shade is the right motor (passenger side). Both motors are the same, so if you have time on your hands and cannot get a new motor, you should be able to remove the sunroof motor and use the one for the shade (in theory), to see if that'll get the sunroof to tilt and move out the way. Then you can unclog the lines, close the glass, then move the motor back to the shade side, unless you want to leave the motor there and just leave the shade open. At least until you can get a motor, because eventually you're going to need to clear those drain lines again in the future. Hope that helps!

@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
If your glass didn't work before but the shade did, then I would just replace the glass motor (driver side) and once you do the initialization process, they should sync up. If you feel like it could be the switch and if you can find the schematics, you should be able to check voltage and continuity with a simple multimeter. Maybe you could hit up Eric with "ADVANCED LEVEL AUTO" YT channel and see if he answers your email. His email is usually in his descriptions. He's good with tracking wiring issues.

Pull straight down and not at an angle. The motors that I have removed slid out easily and none have been stuck in the track. If you have a small rubber mallet and if you can fit it up there, you can lightly tap the motor to see if it releases. Also make sure you removed the correct screws and not screws that go to something else on the roof. Not sure why it is stuck for you, other than something else holding it in. Hope you get it out. And be sure to fix your water leak, which is your sunroof drains, that's what causes the motor to go bad. You only need the one motor if the other one works. Don't have to do them in pairs, unless both are bad which almost never happens.

So did this. And now I’m getting a noise. And the moonroof won’t open. you think its off track? I didn’t do the calibration.
@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
You will most likely need to do the initialization process or it may not fully work. You may also get weird noises from aftermarket motors. I doubt it's off track, unless you got a rock or something very hard stuck in there. I would go OEM, if possible, for these type of parts. Try doing the initialization process and let us know if you get it fully working.

@@EverythingInBetween22 when i installed it and before i put the liner back in. It worked fine. Then after i put everything back together it started doing that like it was stuck. Thats the type of noise it makes. I’ll check again and let you know. Thank you.
@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
@@samuelugh5729 Yea, that is weird because there's at least a 1 inch gap between the liner and the motor, so no part of the liner should be touching it and if it was working fine before putting the liner back on, then it doesn't sound like it's off track. It sounds like something with the motor. Try doing the initialization process if you still haven't done that yet. Maybe someone else here has experienced what you are going through and can share.... I just unsnapped the liner, removed the old motor, installed the new one, snapped the liner back, initialized the motor and everything worked great. I really hope you can figure it out. Let us know what happens, bud.

@@EverythingInBetween22 i just figured out what it was. Lol the middle screw wasn’t in so it was coming off the track. it was so hard to do it the first time. But second time. I figured out a way and actually get all 3 in. didn’t really have to calibrate, it was plug and play. now its just the fact of unclogging the drain.

Hi bro, can we use the same motor in escape 2011 model..
@EverythingInBetween22
@EverythingInBetween22 Жыл бұрын
No. They may look the same but I'm sure the internal electrical connections are a bit different. Try looking up Part #: MM1064 (15790). That should be the OEM part number for your 2011 Escape. Plus, it should be cheaper than this explorer motor. Go To ROCKAUTO and search it up. They're like $50 cheaper. Double check before buying it though. When it comes to electrical, I wouldn't risk plugging up a motor for a different year/model vehicle unless it was a junk car that I didn't car much about. Destroying the electrical system is a nightmare.

Can I fix it or do I need to replace it?
@EverythingInBetween22

It's resistors and capacitors. If you know how to work on electronics, I'm sure some of them can be repaired. Most people just replace. It's easier and faster to get the job done.

Took around 2 hours but because I was trying to film at the same time. If I wasn't filming, I can confidently say that it should take an hour or less to replace the motor.

Well, that sucks bud. It took me a few tries to get it right. You made sure you followed every step?... even leaving the driver door open? I hope you get it figured out. It's interesting you say that... I hear a lot from others around these parts as well, about Ford products being horrible, but we've owned Ford's since as far back as I can remember (like the 92 or 94 Ford Tempo - can't remember which one we had) and we really haven't had much issues, other than the typical head gasket after 200K miles (replaced myself) or the automatic seat belt getting stuck and normal wear/tear on our other Ford vehicles. I guess we've been lucky over the years. As for Explorers, we've had a 94 and 96, sold the 94 to get a 2008, sold the 96 to get a 2011, sold both 2008 and 2011 to get the 2014. And they all have been great to us. We'll eventually sell the 2014 to get a 6th generation (can't wait) but this pandemic car crisis will need to calm down first lol. Not paying those outrageous prices. Good luck and I hope you get the motor initialized.
