2014 Gibson SGJ: Installing Grover 502C 18:1 Locking Tuners

My Fave gets a nice little upgrade for Christmas. I think he's happy about it. I am. These tuners are really nice to use. I've been using them on my standard for a while now and it was enough to convinve me to change these vintage Gibson Deluxe tuners out for another locking set of Grover's. It's a worthwhile upgrade if you have the extra money. It's like a good set of brakes for your car.

You've got to use the jaws of life to keep those vintage tuners in tune...I switched them on both my Les Pauls...the gold top with Gotoh and the burst with Grover.

love your videos! I saw that Scott Grove video on tuners and it's one of those "to each their own" type deal, but after taking his advise on roller saddles and you and Phillip McKnight's on locking tuners I am never going back.! my strat is way more consistent !!

Put these on my Epi Les Paul as a direct replacement, all the holes lined up perfectly. So pleased with the results would recommend them to anyone

I only recently got my first guitar with locking tuners (my 7-string Schecter) and I'll never go back. They are *so* much more convenient and useful than standard tuners. I've already replaced the tuners on my PRS SE245 with locking tuners, and plan to do the same with my MIM Tele as soon as possible.

Just bought Fender Nashville w/locking tuners, so far they do not keep the guitar in tune any better than any of my other guitars. That said, I have not changed strings yet, but am thinking about going to a heavier gauge soon, we'll see then. By the way, Mic is great, our world needs more people like you and her. Later.

Installing those locking tuners is a nice and easy upgrade. People seem to like those PolyTune Clip tuners. I think when my Snark breaks that will be the one to get.

Hi, My first time changing out machine heads. What of the letters and numbers stamped on the back of the Grover’s? Namely, “PW 1, and PW 2, 2 PW, 1 PW”? There’s no PW 3. What do these pertain to?

One of the tuners on mine broke (the rubber feet that hold the back in place snapped for some reason, just real shitty outdated design tbh), I ended up having to replace them with rotomatics the other week because Gibson don't let you buy single tuners. Just adds to the long list of things I had to replace on my SGJ. That's Gibson for you

Kluson makes 2 kinds of locking tuners to replace the original Gibson or Kluson tuners: Revolution locking 3 x 3 tuners (wheel lock) & top-locking Klusons. I have 3 sets of the Kluson Revolution locking tuners.

Putting a new Tusq XL nut on my SG and those locking Kluson's are next. I'm excited that they exist for my SG won't stay in tune. Hopefully new nut and tuners will do the trick.

Unrelated: Can someone help me? I don't know much about guitars. I want to replace the nut on my Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, and I don't know what nut to buy. I was looking into the Earvana nuts, but I'm not sure which specific Earvana nut to buy. I'm looking for a nut that will just drop in with no need for modifying it or shaving it down.

Thanks man. Nothing's wrong with my nut per se haha. (Other than the fact that it's cheap plastic) but I plan on using the tremolo a lot so I want a better nut for better tuning stability etc

TUSQ is good stuff, but plan for some cutting and shaping now matter what you go with.. When properly cut and receiving the occasional application of Big Bends Nut Sauce or something similar, I think bone is the best of both worlds.

Don't you find the Grovers make an SG a bit neck heavy, Nelson? I always do.

Pádraig Floyd move the neck strap location to the top horn. I've seen SG's w/ the robo tuner and the strap button at the horn location and it perfectly balanced on the guys finger

My 2016 Les Paul Traditional came with Vintage tuners 14:01 (:01 WTF?) with Grover Green Buttons. I thought they were 18:01 (:01 just kidding) since they are so accurate. I know people say locking tuners are a waste on a hard tail guitar. I just think they should come standard on every guitar for just the ease of changing strings. I want that Poly Tuner for Christmas now.

Scott grove is actually correct... and so was the guitar tech that told me 20 years ago that i was wasting money swapping tuners....Firstly... the ratio difference is hardly noticable, specially when using a winder, secondly.. tuners are made up inside of a cog gear and a worm gear, that goes for all of them.. the cog gear CAN NOT turn a worm gear, its impossible, thats why they are designed the way they are and why with todays technology they still have not changed the design.... anyone who tells you their tuners are slipping is full of shit... it is impossible for them to do so,

Locking tuners make a difference though... String slippage is possible, even if tuner slippage is improbable. The thinner poles on kluson style tuners are prone to a lot of slippage... Source? I own a Gibson.

GOTOH SD lockers with conversion bushings weight much less than the original vintage tuners lessening neck dive. Why are you adding Grovers and adding a ton of weight???
