I was reading that the lower control arm frame bolts should be tightened with the the wheel height at a level similar to where it would be during driving or the wheel on the ground. Do you think that is necessary?
@BUTTEWORKS Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can leave the bolt loose, drop the truck with the wheel on and tighten it. That actually makes sense so the rubber bushing is not under tension in the resting position. Although I don’t know of the bushing will move in its housing which in that case does not matter.

@@BUTTEWORKS I am 58, I always got mechanics to do the work but once I started watching KZbin videos I have learned so much. I did my brakes all around, rotors and pads, took my time, did it right and even taught my son to do his brakes on his car. One thing I noticed is brakes in Northern states should be taken apart yearly, grease hardware etc and parts last much longer. My back brakes on my 2019 sierra where wire because the pads seized to hardware and wore rotors. If I had taken apart yearly that would never have been changed. Hardware kits are cheap to replace if corroded.

Thank you. I use a Gedore 20-100Nm. Above that I use a cheap LEXIVON that actually works very well. I added links to the video if you want to check them. The Gedore is top of the line and very expensive, it was a gift from friend.

You should always torque the nut side of the bolt, not from the bolt head. That way the resistance of the bolt turning in its hole is not a factor in the torque spec.
@BUTTEWORKS2 жыл бұрын
Agree. Lower control arm I could have done it that way, there were a few other where the torque wrench would not fit, but yes, you are right. Good point.

Great, complete video! I'm thinking about attempting it. I was told at the shop that I need lower ball joints, and they quoted me $830. I have a 2.5" RC level kit, so I'm thinking about getting the RC upper control arms with included ball joints, and just replacing the lower ball joints and not the arms, since the lower arms are pretty expensive. Also, what are the torque specs for reinstalling the CV axle? Should the cam bolts be torqued all the way prior to having it aligned, or will they torque it if I go straight to the shop for the alignment? Thanks again!
@BUTTEWORKS3 жыл бұрын
Brent, the torque of the one nut in the wheel hub is 180ftlb and in the other end, where the CV axle connect to the transmission (six bolts) 58ftlb. And yes, tight the cams to specs for safety, you don't want these loose even if the wheel is misaligned. The alignment shop will undo it and get it aligned and retorqued. Good luck with your repairs and thank you for your feedback.

To replace the ball joints , you have have to replace the whole control arm?
@BUTTEWORKS3 жыл бұрын
No, you can buy only the ball joints as well. Removing the old ones is a pain (in my opinion) plus the rubber bushing will be worn out too. But if you want to replace only the ball joints you actually can. I believe each one is around $50 if you buy the Mevotech TTX.

@BUTTEWORKS3 жыл бұрын
I’t makes sense what you say. I don’t know if they do it under load on the assembly line since the truck is in a conveyor. In any case after this job I brought the truck to the alignment shop where they get them loose to do the alignment job so I hope they tighten them down the right way, with load, if that is the case. I’m glad you found the video useful.

@@BUTTEWORKSexactly, Anytime you change outs suspension parts it’s good practise to get an alignment, cheap investment for expensive tires.
@RG-ij7ge Жыл бұрын
You absolutely should do it loaded and at ride height. Alignment shop is not going to mess with lower arm, no adjustments. If you put it back close they wont touch the top ones either, they mess with the tie rods. Just experienced this and had to redo the work I did by loosening everything and retorqueing with tires back on and off the jack. It started to creek and pop after about a week. Reworking it fixed the noises and clunks instantly.

As far as they are compatible with your model and year it should be ok. Check the the website of RockAuto.com they have the same component for light, medium and heavy duty made of different materials, steel, aluminum... So if you want to upgrade to a heavy duty aluminum version they will show if there is any option for your truck. Or if you want to stick to the steel ones you may have they will most likely have it too.
