@@JaySosaNY Best advice I can give you is buy the book yourself. And get the scanner danner premium and basically treat it as a field guide /class. Make a schedule 2-3 times a week to go through premium classes. During the weekend workout some deal to get vehicles to practice what you have learned with known good. If you can have a couple broken ones to tryout your new knowledge that you have practiced then even better. The couple hundred you will spend for the year is worth it. Their is a ton of free info and paid stuff out there to get the book knowledge. I bet you have a ton of friends and family to practice with known good vehicles and problem vehicles,. Plus the stuff you work on at work. After all that and you are confident and being realistic with your abilities, then you can start negotiating your pay at your current or other places.

Nice job Paul catching the illusive lazy O2 sensor. My favorite is the one with 35 DTC’s & the customer’s complaint is poor fuel mileage. ‘How about we start with the safety issues first, like getting those brakes & stability system to work properly.’ Sometimes its not wise to let the customer set the priority.

Paul I would just like to mention that if the coil boots are replaceable on those coils, it's a good idea to replace them when doing plugs. Obviously one coil is getting replaced so that one is good. From all those heat cycles the rubber gets very weak and pliable and can allow the spark to arc out to the head instead of going through the plug. You probably already know this but just mentioning it for the viewers👍. Great video on catching the slow front o2 and good explanation why it's happening the way it is.

Just bought an 05 civic LX last week to hold me over for a few weeks (15yrs of owning my 92 ka24e 5sp kc rw hardbody, I accidentally didn't realize the coolant temp was toasted.. reading nothin.. overheated and messed up the head gasket. Gap checked the head all over the place and it's ok, THANK GOD!). When I bought it, tstat was out but sealed housing, ran right in the middle of the temp dial, had a cel though. Hooked up my scanner, saw 0301. Swapped plugs 1 with 4 and noticed the coilover wasn't at tough on 1 as it was with 4... No misfire after that, but I was curious... Swapped the coils altogether just to make it random and see what might go down. Nothin! Drove over 350mi so far and no CEL or mis on live data (about 40mi to work and back total). Lol I've never seen a car with so many miles be so clean AND run so smooth and perfect! How do u flip a digital odometer?! Hahaha! 300389mi! Drives perfect! Only 2200 bucks! GOD IS GOOD! also, cleared codes after writing em down before doing anything. Dude said it ran fine and his brother fixed it years ago, when the valve cover leaked a tiny tiny bit lol (I was like... That's all?! Holy crap!) , never felt an issue, but he felt a rumble a few days before he sold this due to his brother out of state (he's a friend of a trustworthy friend whos brother was a civic fan and was always there for his lil bro). All stock. They wanted to make it a million mile stock car! To have a vehicle cheap, and this seemed too simple to just fix it before I even bought it, I am SOOOO stoked! Such a blessing!

I just resolved this same issue on a 2015 Malibu. Car would lean out stupid under light load and stall when the guy backed it out of his driveway. It didn’t have cam sensor codes like this car but what it ended up being was an aftermarket upstream O2 sensor. So the last shop that had it had actually made the correct repair, just with the wrong component. A lot of Indy techs still don’t know the newer the car is, the more important it is to ONLY use OEM O2 sensors. Manufacturers are building these things sooo strict now to keep a death grip on the parts revenue. I’ve personally noticed that GM’s and Subaru’s are incredibly picky with their parts. You can’t use aftermarket on those things any more. Even if it’s quality aftermarket like Denso, Bosch, etc. If it’s not OE it will not work.

Another theory is that the lean condition from the O2 sensor caused the coil voltage to increase in an attempt to jump the gap of worn spark plugs. Bottom line, couldn't have made that theory without the detailed information you delivered through following the data in the video.

2014 Malibu with the customers main complaint being an intermittent stalling problem. We found in the process of recreating the stalling event, that the car had a bad misfire, a bad catalytic converter, an idle lean condition, a leaking valve cover gasket (into the ignition coil area) and a few other issues. As many of you know, a customer won't bring you his car, even though he has been staring at a check engine light for years, until he can't drive it anymore. Our job as technicians is to navigate through all of the problems he has, to find the one issue that is making his car undriveable and advise him along the way with all the other stuff. Sometimes one problem can set many different codes and sometimes there are many different problems. If you find yourself not making money performing diagnostic work, then you are not billing for it properly! Here is the short pulled from this case study kzbin.infoU1sqOTLEPSg
@JAKEaudio22 жыл бұрын
.....Damn it man, THIS is hitting the nail on the head. It is SOOOO hard to NOT fix everything you find wrong -EVEN when it means you just fix it along the way and don't charge the customer. It is just damn near impossible to see and KNOW a problem and it's solution and then not fix it. Great post Brother, real world stuff
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
@@JAKEaudio2 the hardest part is balancing what you are seeing wrong, and determining if that will fix the customers intermittent stalling problem (as in this case). The ignition coil that was faulty and causing a misfire, the leaking valve cover gasket into the coil area, the bad cat, and the idle lean condition had NOTHING to do with the stalling issue. It was a bad new oxygen sensor that was the cause of the stall and there were no codes associated with that. That right there is the hard part of our field and people just don't get it. Especially the customers. They think because they are paying for a diagnostic fee that you should be able to tell them every single thing that is wrong with there car. Ridiculous right? I mean, when you go to the doctor you don't just say, "I'm broken, fix me"

I have been dealing with what I believe to be a rich condition in my 02 chevy express 5.7. I have your book, an autel 808s scanner, years of working on vehicles and love watching your videos more than TV. Some of what I've seen from you points me in one direction lean and others point rich so confuses me a bit as I'm learning computer diagnostic still. Only codes I'm getting is random misfire and maf performance. Old and new maf data is .02 lbs per second which works out to like 9 grams and from my understanding should be like 6 for my motor. At idle all o2s go full negative trims and come back around 0 driving. 5 and 7 misfires at idle mostly and 6 and 8 driving mostly, sometimes other cylinders are in the mix too but at lower counts. It's my only vehicle so drive it daily and very little time to diag anything because I'm always fixing someone else's vehicle or house lol and no shelter to work under either in the pnw weather. Anything you can advise on to help narrow down my path of chasing many causes would be greatly appreciated because the gas bill is eating away my funding for living let alone parts I might need. I think there should be more emphasis put on the lean condition, because a lean cylinder is harder to fire and loads the ignition system greatly. Which can cause coils and plugs to burn up. If u replace 1 coil and 4 plugs and a o2 sensor ur likely going to be in the same "boat" or garage in a few months if u don't correct that lean condition.

Just curios, I’ve been working on a friends 2010 Terrain (2.4). Many codes were repaired and a broken timing chain guide so everything (timing chain, VCT sprockets, guides, VVT solenoids, etc) we’re replaced. The main issues was exactly as you described in this video, when vehicle warmed up the fuel trim went crazy, O2 sensors were erratic, timing was erratic, misfires and stalling. You mentioned the O2 sensor and/or computer ground you believed your brother corrected that corrected those issues. I replaced both O2 sensors). I’m curious (as you could no longer re-create that issue, if when the vehicle was returned to the customer whether or not the stalling issue returned again?

👍 Chris: you nailed this one ! Good video, would like to have seen the new sensor activity ! Without “skipping” a beat ! Weird one , but with a “plugging” up Cat, the O2 don’t know whether to shit or wind it’s watch ! Causes vacuum leaks & possibly kicking the egr off it’s seat, causing a STALL @ idle ?! Is there a probe/setup you recommend if you absolutely HAD to see the secondary waveform on this style coil? I ran into this the other day on a 4 wire coil on a Mercedes and ended up going through the PITA process of swapping it for the same reason of not being able to get a good waveform. I found the problem anyways (was the coil) but would like to avoid the extra work if I have a problem on a similar car where it's a pain to swap the coils.

This is where as a backyard mechanic, I struggle. If I took this to a shop if the main mechanic worked on it I am looking at like $400 easily for these repairs. If they put one of their understudies on it I am looking at maybe double that. For $400 at Rock Auto I can replace all the coils and spark plugs both oxygen sensors and the map sensor. So I guess my question is. When do you involve a professional versus throwing the parts canon at a problem at home.
@ScannerDanner Жыл бұрын
If you have a trusted diag tech. Every time it is worth taking it to him. Sure you can roll the dice and get lucky, but let's say you're wrong in this scenario. Now you changed a bunch of coils and plugs that were good, to inferior parts bought online (ALL OF THEM ARE INFERIOR). You may have even added a problem by replacing parts, that's how poor the parts market is these days.

customers are not ignorant to the fact that cars are getting alot more complicated and more difficult to diagnose.. when people have been riding dirty with thier check engine light on, they know that they have been neglecting to have thier car serviced. why there is a mindset of people not wanting to put money into thier cars is something that I think happened due to the longtime abundance of cheap cars this country enjoyed for many decades.. it has always been should I put 1,000 into this car, or go buy another one for 3,500 dollars that runs and drives... this option is no longer the case, and will never be again in my opinion.. people need to change thier mindset abt investing in the car they have, and keep it running longer .

On the Chrysler systems that used a PWM heater circuit, the Bosch O2 is absolutely NOT compatible! Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here too

Out of scope question for SD, but how far have you got with learning wideband O2 systems ? Any tips for working with low power issues on wideband systems ?
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
no different than using the narrow band O2, you just need to learn the range of the sensor and each system is different. I just did one a few days ago and performed a high rpm deceleration event to monitor the lean side (decel fuel cut off) and then a WOT run for the rich side, all while monitoring the downstream O2 to confirm. You're just not doing voltmeter testing on the signal circuits on these. The range is from 2-4ma on these sensors and you are just not going to monitor that low of current. So scan data diagnostics on these for the most part is all you need. You can see heater circuit operation and the signal itself too of course. I'd say the only time you need to perform voltage measurements on a wideband is if you have a steady, unchanging signal on the scan tool and you want to confirm there is not a broken wire.
@daytonpyro2 жыл бұрын
how do you know it needs a cat? i didn't understand that part. and if you did that pressure test connecting to the upstream O2 port, do you think it would of showed over 2 pounds of pressure?
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
Needs a cat for an efficiency issue, not a restriction. I'll get you a link on a cat test for this error
@daytonpyro2 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner oh interesting. so, some precious metals have left the system maybe?
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
@@daytonpyro I believe the catalyst substrate can start to melt down before it ever becomes a restriction. Also contamination. And so it can no longer catch and store oxygen as it once could.

Heater circuit codes are Typically either a wiring problem on the heater circuit (broken wire, blown fuse) or a faulty O2

This is something I fight with my boss and manager with.. they get in this whole “fix everything” and they lose their a$$ on diag time…. I fight with them all the time about focusing on customer complaint FIRST.. then they can sale another inspection or what not AFTER addressing what the customer wanted in the first place

EXACTLY!! Especially when the customers main complaint is intermittent and you have yet to duplicate it! That is a serious unknown to be playing with and it is not time to sell the customer all the other stuff yet.

@scannerdanner hey Paul! You should snag a shotgun mic for recording, when you have a guest. I've been doing audio engineering most of my life, but I'm also very mechanically and especially electrically inclined... I watch your videos like crazy and I seriously understand your conclusions (and the few times that they become a pt2). Anyways, back on subject lol: if you wear your lavaliere mic, use a shotgun mic for the guest or direction of interest, and use a compressor/gate (honestly, don't buy a compressor and gate for input recording, considering what your use is. Use a software one for during editing)... So, instead of standing by Danner, you can be at any distance. The gate allows you to set a volume threshold (I'm sure u can already figure, but still, allows sound to pass at a particular db level), attack is how fast it reacts, release/decay is how long it stops reacting.. and same with a compressor except it has a ratio to "compress" louder noises, so everything can be more even across the board. If you find a gate/compressor/exciter, the exciter keeps loudness at the volume u set it at (usually after the compressor), but boosts the quiet parts, so u can separate background from foreground noise. Once all is set, write down and/or save the settings, and then it's just minor tweaks depending on the video... Of course there's "gain" (raw premix audio) and volume (edited postmix audio). Lol I know ur pretty particular about that aspect of ur clips! Seems especially with ur brother! But I guarantee it'll make a massive impact on all of ur shots, and especially ur class/workshop ones when ur hands on with ur students!! I seriously want to join ur school! Really thinking about doing it man. Thanks for another great insight on some tricky stuff!

She's doing okay. Year 4 of her battle with this blood cancer. Praying the Lord gives me many more with her. It is in remission (sort of) right now. The low dose chemo that she takes 3 weeks out of every month is the way they battle this cancer now. Life expectancy used to be about 3 years from diagnosis back in the day and it is now up to around 10. But the side effects of the chemo have definitely taken there toll on her, but it is keeping her alive and her quality of life right now I would say is still very good. I know this cancer will take her some day, I just don't want her to suffer. Thanks for asking Jarin!

I'm trying to think of another trade where you would be expected to know such radically different systems/tech. From manufacturer to manufacturer and even year to year you could be looking at completely different data. Come to think of it, that's why a good understanding of the basics matters. (Yes you say that all the time😂)
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
absolutely spot on! What we deal with is crazy sometimes but yes, indeed, learn your fundamentals and you'll be able to navigate any problem. That is, as long as it can be duplicated right? I got lucky and saw that O2 do it;s thing right at the end

@@ScannerDanner in the automotive trade we need to be an electrician, electronics specialist, plumber, hydraulics tech, hvac tech, mechanical tech, data analysis tech, customer service representative, so on and so forth. We also need to purchase the tools to work on and diagnose all of the relevant systems that we see on vehicles, yet we are paid as "just a mechanic". Completely under-appreciated trade imo, the best thing I did lately is get out of the trade and get a job with 90% less stress and labour, that pays twice as much. I appreciate what you do and admire that you persevere.

This customer really shot themselves in the foot by not maintaining or repairing problems promptly. Spark plugs being replaced on time might have saved the coil, a new ignition coil could have saved the O2 sensor and avoided burning up the catalytic converter. Penny wise, pound foolish.
