On the fluid debate, I have also used Valvoline Maxlife ATF in ZF transmissions ZF6 and ZF8 in BMW’s and after several years and thousands of miles have had good luck. I’d say the shifting feels smoother and quicker as well. I also prefer changing it around 40,000-50,000 miles for good measure. The BMW dealer was reluctant to change it at my request as it stated “lifetime” fill, however the service writer said that customers have brought in the Maxlife fluid to use and it has worked fine. Of course, they recommend OEM fluid while under factory warranty. But after that, he said the Maxlife hasn’t given any issues. Just sharing my experience.

I don’t think it’s really a debate. The manual says “use only Mopar zf fluid”… it’s pretty clear. Do you put random oil viscosities in your engine too? Mix HOAT and OAT? there is no debate - if something says “manufacturer recommends” that is much different than “use only”. Transmission is an awfully expensive part to gamble with to save $100 on fluids

The diameter of the hose and pickup tube on this sprayer is much larger than what a regular sprayer which makes the job a whole lot faster, especially when needing to transfer several gallons at a time. The trick is to find a way to seal that larger hose to the threaded sprayer fitting without leaking under pressure. Obviously the guy that makes these figured it out.

update from a complete flood truck restore, 3.6l 2014 ram tradesman edition: i restored or recovered the truck in 2018 and have been running this fluid since, no issues, im doing a fluid and filter change today or tomorrow
@okhotrodder Жыл бұрын
I'm working on my first ZF8 trans. I usually use oem everything. Went to the Dodge dealer yesterday. The Mopar 8&9 speed atf was $35 per qt. It cost me $76 for 2 qts after tax. All I was doing was making sure the trans was full of fluid since the rotary dial electronic shifter is stuck in park. I'm guessing the valvebody or something internal got damaged while flat towing it behind an rv. The owner states she pulled the park release cable on the left side, left the trans and transfer in neutral and pulled it over 1000 miles. When she got to her destination, she couldn't drive the truck because it was stuck in neutral. I replaced the rotary shifter control at a cost of $850, which the dealer diag suggested. Now at least it'll start, just stuck in park. I'm able to fool the shifter as it's starts before it gets synced, and all that happens is it tried to move forward in reverse, neutral, and drive, but just for a moment before it's just starts making noise. Once you place it back in park, it's stuck again. In my experience, using different fluid sometimes isn't a problem with the trans itself, but could lead to other issues like coolers or fittings leaking. Temp not being at optimal under loads could also be an issue. I have no clue on the ZF but if someone were to pull the max towing capacity on the truck/trans, and the wrong fluid is used, it may cause an issue that normal or light loads won't cause. I do know many other videos I've watched in the last few days trying to figure out what's wrong with it stated not to use the red fluid. Oreillys told me none of their oil is capatable according to their computer, which includes the LV fluid. So it's conflicting info which I'm not the expert to say it's wrong. I've decided to replace the trans with a salvage yard unit. The dealer wants $6k for a new trans and $5k for a reman. The valve body/trans module cost is $4k so no point in just replacing that when a whole new unit is 1k more. I found a salvage yard trans with 120k miles for $850. The truck has 260k on it. The owner says the ecodiesel is running fine and I've did most of the repairs on it for the last 100k miles. According to my research and everyone I've talked to, the only other thing it could be is the trans itself because of improper towing. The manual states damage will occur is the trans isn't placed in park while recreational pulling. The transfer is placed in neutral. The owner states she put the trans in neutral because she thought transfer case meant trans. There's limited info on the technical aspect of the ZF out there. I don't work on enough of them to be an expert on it so I'm not making a video covering what I'm currently doing. The pressure can looks like a motive bleeder bottle that has been modified, which many brands use the same bottle. It cost about $48 on Amazon or you can buy kits with fittings for about $100 or so. I normally use a pump oil filler with a curved nozzle. The same type all lube places use. They cost about $70 for a cheap one and about $200 for name brand. You can get by with a radiator filler nozzle/pump for $20.

On my jeep I just used a brake fluid hose and pump. I ran the line from above the engine almost straight down into the fill hole. I ran the clear hose into a water bottle that I cut the bottom off and poured the fluid into the bottle and raised the bottle up and the fluid flowed right down into the fill hole. That is a lot easier than pumping it through the wheel well or from underneath.
@rickshutt3974 Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the tip on the Fluid Tool, but I was hoping on some information on how to drain the other half of the fluid in your system. The torque converter and transmission cooler in the radiator holds the other half of the 9.5 quart total. I noticed you didn't change the filter, which is part of the pan, and your new gallon of fluid you just put in, is now going to mix with the other dirty gallon in the system. Maybe you could work on doing a complete fluid and filter change.

Service interval recommendations are too long (BMW Chrysler). On BMW, Chrysler vehicles equipped with this transmission, the factory rates the fluid to last a lifetime. The unfortunate fact is that this is simply not accurate. Tests have shown that the fluid starts breaking down at around 62,000 miles. It is therefore recommended that the fluid be changed every 50,000 miles. Doing so will assure you a long transmission life span.

Am getting ready to change my trans fluid and like everyone else and am not sure about a few things. My old man is a diesel mechanic so its just the fluid selection that I am worried about. Awesome videos you do. Question, the drain plug on the 8hp70, is it a one time use or does it go back in and reseal if wanting to reuse the same pan? And you switched from Amsoil to Valvoline just because of price correct? And the Valvoline has been working just as good and no shifting problems yet? How is the wear metals in the pan, original to Amsoil to Valvoline? Is that Valvoline thicker similar to the Amsoil universal fluid or thinner like the fuel efficient Amsoil? I run Amsoil in everything but you have me second guessing this ZF transmission oil selection now. And Martins range rover problem, could that have been due to an over or under fill? Anyone know? If we all posted videos of our research and results like Shawn we would all probably be farther along. Appreciate it. Cheers

+Martin “MartinLoccz” Pulido JR From ZF - Once the transmission exhibits any mechanical or electrical problems, a complete rebuild or replacement is required. So This is the thing about ZF transmissions, they say never touch the fluid, its lifetime right? well some actual transmission repair shops have sent in ZF fluid on brand new BMW's and Mercedes and at 30,000 miles according to blackstone the fluid starts turning acidic. 70,000 miles seems like the magic number for and ZF transmission to start showing shifting problems and electrical problems if the original fluid has never been changed. The problem is once it shifts bad, your done, you need a new transmission, which is why i really stress changing this fluid at 30,000 miles no matter what kind of ZF transmission you have under a heavy duty cycle, or 40,000 miles on a heavy duty cycle, 191,000 and my ZF 8 speed shifts exactly the same way it did when i first bought my truck brand new. If you question my methodology on this transmission, look up mercedes source here on youtube, call the owner, he will re affirm the fluid change intervals.

All the ZF8 are the same except for the different models handling different torque. It all comes down to the data sheet for the oil and what the oil requirements are. OEM does not mean better, since they are about saving money more than performance.

There are literally many thousands of people who have switched from the ZF OEM Fluid to MaxLife full synthetic and have put hundreds of thousands of miles on their ZF transmission with the MaxLife with only good results including smoother shifting than when the car had the stock OEM ZF fluid. One person now has over 400,000 miles running the MaxLife in his ZF trans (8HP70) and it still shifts like new. You just need to do a little more research. Valvoline Maxlife is specifically listed as ZF Lifeguard 8 compliant. The Lifeguard 8 fluid is a Dexron clone. sharena21.springcm.com/Public/Document/18452/9e447451-fe75-e711-9c10-ac162d889bd3/3fa3136a-09bd-e711-9c12-ac162d889bd1

For the life of me I can't understand why Chrysler continues to use junky German automatic transmissions. I understand they had no choice when Daimler bought them but their no longer owned by them. These transmissions have been unreliable and expensive to repair and difficult to service with their so called " sealed for life " system.

Not sure what your basing your statement on, but firstly German auto parts are widely known as some of the best... especially when it comes to reliability. Second there are several articles out there talking about how good and reliable these transmissions are... their used in literally dozens of models of cars across a multitude of manufacturers. If anything there reputation for reliability went down once chrysler built a plant in the US and started producing there own version..lol
@desiderious14 жыл бұрын
@@jdouglas7516 Yes at one time German engineered and built cars were reliable, cheap and easy to maintain, no more. The latest example of failed German engineering and reliability, the ZF transmission used by many automakers including Honda who's sterling reputation has been tarnished and why they stopped using the ZF transmission. Or how about VW's dual clutch automatic that has been an unreliable and expensive disaster. And let's not forget the GDI technology developed by VW then used by other German then American and Japanese automakers that have also been a disaster due to carbon buildup on the intake system. This is why Toyota came out with GDI and port injection technology to fight the huge amounts of carbon buildup common to GDI engines.
@jdouglas75164 жыл бұрын
@@desiderious1 well I cant speak for every ZF product made... but the ZF 8 speed transmissions have a stellar reputation as I stated before. Honda never had a good reputation for automatic transmissiions had a good one for standards. All I know is you call an auto parts store (or even look online) more often than not the German based parts such as MOOG, MEVOTECH, BOSCH, BILSTEIN, and countless others have the best warranty, best reputation and are the most recommended. Here is one example of several articles speaking on the reputation of the zf 8 speed transmissions www.caranddriver.com/features/a23367341/automatic-transmission-best-zf-eight-speed/
