The Jeep has only 14 pound feet of torque more than the Touareg but it comes in at a higher rpm and the Jeep is 400 pound heavier than the VW is. This is why I find it funny that Sami says the Jeep has more torque than the VW and "you can really feel it". Really? I find that hard to believe.

One thing people over look is the Axle Ratio. Sure the Jeep has a slightly lower ratio of 3.45 to the VW 3.27 but even that small of a difference can be felt when punching the gas.

I drove a '15 Grand Cherokee with 60K miles and it felt loose and cheap. I bought a '12 Touareg TDI with 78K miles and it felt much more solid and quality. Now I understand why there is such a strong following on these VW machines.

The styling of the Jeep looks overwrought and gaudy. VW has a clear win here, with it's classy & sophisticated lines. Hard to beat the Infotainment system on the Jeep, but the VW wins again for overall interior quality...some cheap plastics In the jeep, especially around the cupholders and the lower dash/doors

Take the Touareg as it drives wonderful and does not feel heavy. Corners well, pulls good and is quiet on the highway. I was surprised how easy it is to park and drive in tight spaces. I just love it.

I would pick the Touareg over the jeep in a heart beat. it's so much classier and luxurious. if I saw the two parked side by side I'd say the person with the Touareg has more money (appearance wise). the only two things I can see the jeep has that the VW doesn't is the cooled seats and air suspension. but nobody will ever really use the air suspension for anything but snow. it's not a bad thing that VW sells less than the Jeep. it makes it more exclusive...my parents are car hunting and I'm suggesting the Touareg all the way

I've driven both and the Touareg definitely is a better driving vehicle if you ever experience a "corner" or a road that doesn't have a bend in it. For me, I'll spend the extra money for a Touareg, Audi Q5 or an X5.

After two months of research.. I bought a 2014 VW Touareg TDI Lux. I drove the Grand Cherokee and I did not like it.. it felt like I was almost driving a suburban.. the material felt cheap inside. The Touareg is refined.. it is a solid vehicle. The drive, turns and speed feel like I'm driving a high-end sports car. No car wins here.. try them out yourselves first. The 2014 VW Touareg was considering one of the best vehicles in the world for that year. Good luck.

Adaptive Cruise Control is actually pretty common now...most Touaregs in Europe have it...I have in on a 2013 Audi a3.... Air suspension is also one common option....maybe half of the touaregs have it... The rest of the options are also available...such as ventilated seats etc....

Dinu G In that case you are right but a caveat. If you are travelling in deep snow or deteriorating road conditions(which most wont be doing) then you definaitely should get AWD. However, I too live in the north and currently drive a sports car as a daily driver, I assure you proper tires and patience will still get you to your destination. This was more evident this past brutal winter.

The reliability for the grand Cherokee has been terrible with the new 8 speed. Even the VW which is not known for reliability is much better. The Touareg had the better interior, certain parts of the grand Cherokee interior feel very bad for its price tag. I do wish the Touareg had air suspension in the US, then it would be a complete winner.

+Lathan Starnes This is a flat-out lie. Both cars have good rankings, but the Jeep gets some reports from folks who off-road them. The VW is basically just a BIG AWD car, while the Jeep is true off-road capable. Jeep will always get more issues reported because of people abusing them (as expected). Our Jeeps have been more reliable than previous Subaru and Audi Q7. BOTH cars have great warranty packages available, so this is all a non issue anyway. Buy the VW if you want a more upscale road car with lots of room. Buy the Jeep if you need more serious snow & off road capability. They're both very good cars. For now I would not own a VW because of the fact that they lied about their technology and got caught acting despicably.

VW quality more than makes up for gimmicky Chyrslers "equipment" that you dont necessarily know if it doesnt or does not work. You essentially gave the offroad to the Jeep because it's a Jeep and has a offroad knob. The jeep won because it was cheaper in this test. what you worry about is like 10 years ago man, have you ever even drive one of those modern diesel cars nowadays? You barely hear that diesel noise( outside sure you do, inside you wont notice too much ) and for the fuel price? have to tell you, sometimes even cheaper than the gas! It seems everyone forgets the the most important factor of all; COST OF OWNERSHIP. Hate to say it, but you will get better resale out of the VW and a much lower lower COO. The Grand Cherokee does not have the track record of VW for the long haul of ownership. When I run my vehicles well over 100,000 kms, I need to know what the cost per km will be.

If you want to see which one is actually the better car watch the 2 of them take the elk test or moose test where the grand Cherokee almost rolls over lifts tires off the ground is uncontrollable at any speed the touareg just slipped through the test with barely a movement of anything

Resale is lower on the Jeep and rated under the "Not buy" category. It was part of the Dodge/Fiat group that used taxpayer money to get out of receivership. Yes, vw, BMW, Audi, etc did something similar, but then Isuzu, GM etc made vehicles that were knowingly unsafe. The VW looks cleaner and also ran the Dakar rally, BAJA etc, which this Jeep could never do. Yes, I know they were modified.

Any Jeep short of the Rubicon requires soooooo many upgrades to make it do any serious off roading that you might as well buy a Land Rover. Here's my list. I think this should be a video. Hummer H1. Land Rover Defender. Mercedes G Wagen. Range Rover. Discovery/LR3/LR4. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. VW Touareg/Audi Q7. Porsche Cayenne can do it but it gives up a bit for street performance. The rest of the Jeeps are not hard core off road vehicles fresh off the show room floor. The proof is in the aftermarket segment. There is an endless array of upgrades for Jeep to help it tackle the terrain. Except for the new Cherokee. Chrysler upgraded one and said it cost them a couple of hundred thousand to do it. They had to cut the body and you can only raise the vehicle another inch or so. So if you want real off road ability. You can buy the Jeep and spend the equivalent of a good used Jeep in upgrades or just go buy from the list I made. Lol

Antwion Cooper for half the amount of money you would save with the GC over the mall crawlers your mentioned, you can outfit a GC that could go where the others could never dream of going. They make tons of aftermarket items for "Offroad" because people buy them to go offroad and there is a market for it. Putting a winch bumper on a Touareg, and half the other 4x4's you mentioned, is wasted money. On a Jeep it is a useful item because you can get into terrain that you may need it, the others can't even get there to be able to use it.

Can the new corporate grill on Volkswagens be any more boring? Build quality is a nice thing to have but I don't think bland equals "sophisticated" when it comes to looks. However I do think the Jeep has the opposite problem. Gaudy in this trim level and overstyled. I preferred it before the 2014 refresh.

As for the Cherokee having more 'bling', that is not exactly a good thing. More bling-bling, more breaky-breaky. You need a manufacturer that has a proven track record of all the extras not costing you a fortune over time. I've been in the Jeep and it's not even close to my 2007 A6 Audi for fit and finish - way too much plastic, ill fitting interior, vented seats that didn't work, rough idling engine. That was enough to scuttle any thought of a test drive. This new Jeep is exactly that - new. New suspension for the Jeep, new 8 speed, - yowsers! I'd like to give it a year or two to see how they play out. On the other hand, Vdub has had the bugs worked out of the Toureg for years. Handles better, lighter, better fuel economy, tows more, classier interior, hmmm, seems like a easy choice for me. Heated steering wheel a must?? Nah, wear gloves! So please explain to me how you guys rated the Jeep as the winner???

VW is too ordinary. VWs are much more expensive to fix. I'd definitely get the Jeep between these two. It looks very nice inside and out and just owning it would make me want to find somewhere to drive it off road. I wouldn't buy a diesel in the US. More maintenance, more expensive fuel, just more of a hassle. You've gotta put urea in it and all that. Not all gas stations have it. More expensive by a significant amount. Just doesn't make sense.
