He pretty much retired by himself. Injury is just an excuse as MaLong and XuXin have injuries too. He achieved big fame and gained big fortune too in a short time period as table tennis is highly appreciated in China. There is news about him being spotted dating with popular female actress from time to time after his grand slam. He’s lost motivation to this sport. Zhang Jike is unique to any other Chinese players. He almost lost chance to represent China for world championship game. He is infamous for not following orders. He won national championship which gained him a spot in China national team, otherwise he weren’t be selected. Chinese coach gave him nickname ‘Zang Ao’, which was a dog breed in Tibet, famous for its aggression and hard to train. Zhang Jike is a meteor, a table tennis legend.

You are allowed to catch the ball like that, as long as it has passed the end of the table "volleying" is legal

You are allowed to do that. If you do it over the table it is a point for the opponent but if you do it behind the table nothing happens
