How to change the rear differential fluid on a 2015-2017 Ford F150. Rather than remove the rear differential cover to drain the fluid on this 2016 Ford F150, I elected to use a fluid extractor.
Removing the rear cover allows you to inspect general condition, backlash, etc., but if you don't have reason to suspect any problem, this method is pretty simple and straight-forward.

@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 4 жыл бұрын
@@sacem52 found this on the web "All differentials use gears, bearings and shims. Limited-slip differentials have additional clutch packs. Since there is nothing in any differential that is not in a limited-slip differential, there should be no harm in using a friction modifier in a non-limited-slip differential, although there is no need for it."

What gear oil would you recommend for a 2018 f150 with the electronic differential? I was thinking Amsoil or royal purple or even valvoline but all of them contain some friction modifier additive would it be ok?
@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 4 жыл бұрын
Ford calls for Motorcraft 75W-85 Synthetic in all their 2018 rear diffs. Using an alternate brand with a similar protection range (with or without a friction modifier) is acceptable.The friction modifier helps keep limited-slip friction plates from sticking. It it doesn't have limited slip, it will have not effect. The electronic locking rear diff is not affected by having or not having a friction modifier.

How bad is it to use 80w90 in the rear diff? My 16 f150 called for 80w90 in the front and 75w80 in the rear, but the mechanic put 80w90 in both. Wondering if it's a big deal and if I should take it back.

I'm sure the oil weight will be fine. Hopefully he put in a good synthetic that will hold up for a long time. The rear diff gets more heat and load abuse than the front diff. Conventional oil will be fine too, I'd just do a follow up service a little sooner than if it was synthetic (like 30k instead of maybe 60k)

@steveyd101 3 жыл бұрын
@@MasterJacks sorry. Meant to say 75w85 for the rear (not 75w80). It's not that much of a difference. I think it was a synthetic blend. I sort of treat synthetic like it's normal oil. Yeah the oil might not brake down as quick, but it's all the stuff floating around in it that will mess things up haha

Pulling the rear cover allows you to check out the rear gears and to clean any settled grime that may have accumulated. At 39k, I don't think you'd see much wear.

Also, the magnet is built into the fill plug. They don't put one in the bottom as it can dislodge and take out bearings.

Is LS additive necessary on a '20 Raptor?
@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the raptor has limited slip or not. Adding a friction modifier will not harm a standard differential, but it is necessary if it is limited slip. Short answer, if you put some in you're safe either way. If you bought the fluid from your dealer, they could decode your vin and let you know what you have.

If the Raptor has a L6 (elocker code is on the driver door label) then no modifier is needed....only a limited slip diff requires modifier

So what? Still doesn't mean a drain plug wouldn't be helpful or nice. Removing the cover to drain is dumb
@markk3652
@markk3652 Жыл бұрын
@@stevenc9207 not dumb at all. There is a sump area at the very bottom of the housing that holds quite a bit of oil. This is where most of the debris from gear wear or lsd clutch wear will settle out. Pulling the cover allows for a better removal of this oil containing the debris, which gives a better resultant fluid change out. That debris cannot be removed from the vacuum method shown, this will cause accelerated bearing wear if left in place.

Industry standard is around 30-60k, but it really depends on the extremes it's exposed to. Heavy towing or a lot of around town start/stop would have me lean towards or more frequent interval.
