Mine was replaced under warranty and just like yours, it happened again. This is a common problem even in the first and second generation Honda Fits. Unlike the new Fit, the older FITs at least came with an access door so you could pull the cable and unlock the hatch if this problem occurred. They engineered out this older fix even though they knew this situation was a common problem. 😠

I believe the older models have an access door allowing you to pull the cable as well. Sadly they removed this door in the 3rd generation.

@@HondaFit4Adventure They should have made some sort of provision to use the ignition key to insert into a key unlock by the tailgate latch..like the old days of unlocking a trunk lid. Cost cutting measure by the bean counters in my opinion.

fyi- if you go in from the inside and move the latch over with a screwdriver it fixes it for good. there are other videos on that technique too..

Hi Sean, it's actually a wrap. I believe this style was called "Dry Carbon" There is also a "Gloss Carbon" that looks a bit darker and of course a glossy finish.

So your trunk opens, but you have to stand close to it to do so? I would guess the battery in your key fob is getting low and it's unable to send a signal a far distance.

Battery is fresh. Hatch will not open even if fob is in the car.

My 2018 Fit Sport has the same issue. I just sprayed a little silicone lubricant on the handle/lever and it appears to have done the trick. The inside cover is all one large piece. I assume it just pops off, in case I need to get in there. Does anyone have any experience with popping the cover off. Thought I would ask before I try.

That's rough. I got rear-ended in Colorado kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYrWc4aiatxqsJI so I ended up getting a brand new hatch all together. We'll see how long the new latch mechanism lasts for. I've been slowly taking apart my Honda Fit and documenting the whole experience on my KZbin channel. If the locking mechanism fails again I will figure out how to fix it and make a new video.

Glad to hear! Would you believe that 1rst & 2nd generation Honda Fit's had an interior hatch access panel? If the trunk ever became stuck you could easily pop off the little cover and pull the cable to open up your trunk. They got rid of this access door feature on the 2015 and newer Honda Fit's. It's as if Honda want's you to come to the dealership to fix this COMMON issue.

Good to know that it works on the other models. I think your HONDA FIT has an access door somewhere in the back. If you pop off the door you should be able to pull the trunk cable and open the rear hatch. They removed this access panel on the 3rd generation HONDA FIT #SadFace

Ran into this with my 2017 Honda Fit (only 28,000 miles on it). Normally all doors including the tailgate will unlock by pressing the 'door unlock' button on the ignition key fob when I'm standing by the driver side door but lately the tailgate won't unlock. Was able to get the latch to unlock by putting the ignition key right up to the latch and pressing the 'door unlock' button on the key; then I oiled the sh_t out of the lock mechanism with penetrating oil. Did this 5-6 times in a row worked OK hopefully if I keep the mechanism oiled that will be a permanent fix. Older Fits have a tailgate latch access panel on the inside of the tailgate but mine doesn't.

You are correct. The first and second generation Honda Fit have an access door that you could remove to open your trunk if it ever became stuck. It seems that Honda Removed this little access panel from the 3rd generation Honda Fit even though they knew this was an ongoing problem. Are they trying to force us to come back for the dealership for repairs?

HondaFitFact: The older model Honda Fits had a little service door on the inside. This way if the trunk stuck, you could pop off the little service door on the inside and pull the trunk cable to open it. Why they got rid of that service door I have no idea?

@@johntheblindman. That's what I did, blindly sprayed up into the handle at the hinge points and wiped off the excess. I don't really know if it helps but I don't think it does any harm. I stay away from anything that will attract and hold dirt, like oil or grease. The silicon (I hope) keep moisture away. If you find something better do let us know! Good luck.

Someone rear-ended me, and now my warning beeps are gone. The trunk still locks (with more force than before) , but there is no beep when I lock or unlock the car with the remote. It also no longer beeps when you exit the car with the ignition still on, which I found out when my battery died as a result

Hi Rookie. Does your horn still work on the steering wheel? If so, try this... Open and close the hood on the front of the car. I wasn't getting any warning beeps either but my horn was still working. I realised my hood wasn't closed all the way. Once I slammed the hood down the warning beeps came back. It's a long shot, but worth a try. Let me know. If not, I bet it still has something to do with the latch.

@@HondaFit4Adventure Didn't work but thanks. I think it has something to do with the latch mechanism, the rear door had a small dent but it must have been enough to damage something in the door lock mechanism, maybe a little electronic sensor switch or something

Get yourself a friend to push the unlock button on the door while you press down on the hatch lever. I would recommend replacing your key fob battery. That is the easiest and cheapest solution to this problem.

If you spray WD-40 on the metal and spring around the plastic handle, it will solve this problem.

Jeong, that did not work for me. You also shouldn't use WD-40 as a lubricant. "The main reason for this is that WD40 is not a true lubricant; it is a water and oil displacing solvent. This means that it can actually remove any lube already in the lock, leaving it dry and susceptible to sticking"

@@HondaFit4Adventure Without taking the interior hatch panel off, I sprayed it directly between the handle and metal plates where are placed on the left and right side of the plastic handle using WD40 attached with a thin straw. Also I sprayed around a spring on top of the handle. Then, moved the handle back and forth more than ten times and sprayed it again. The straw helps to spray the oil between the handle and the metal plates that causes a stuck handle. BTW, I got lots of useful information from your video. Thanks.

Fire the engineer. The 1st and 2nd generation Honda Fit had an access panel, so you were able to pull the cable from the inside when this happened. They removed that access panel on the 3rd generation causing you to go to the dealership instead.
