I love this guy compared to most car review people! He doesn't down the diesels, he encourages them!!!! I love my mom's Jetta TDI so much. She averages 42-46 combined and I've hit 58 mpg highway as my record fuel economy. No Pruis can hit over 40 easily unless you abuse city driving for the numbers, and it will never beat a diesel in performance.

I have the same car minus the sport seats/paddle shifters. It's a great car, but Audi needs to design a few things more friendly for the driver. I am 5'10" tall. complaint #1 is the heater controls. They are a long reach to make adjustments, to the point that my shoulder gets slightly hyper-extended to reach them, or I have to reach forward. Controls should never be a reach, but a very simply touch with the raising of your arm/hands and fingers. Complaint #2 is the front seats: the base, where you sit is too short from your lowerback/hip to the front under your thigh leaving ill support to the underside of your thigh (kinda making it feel like your seated on a bench as apposed to a couch). This can be remedied with the purchase of the sport seats. Complaint #3, the computer dash display (driver information system) AND the MMI display does not have a memory. Say you select the dash display (the one in the center of the gauges that shows mileage, fuel economy, etc, or whatever you wish for it to display so you only see the speedo and tach) once you turn off the car, it reverts back to the standard display being shown with all the data. Same with the MMI. You select radio presets for instance as apposed to the entire list of stations available. Once the engine is turned off then turned back on, it reverts to standard radio. Lastly (at least for the moment) as usual with VW and Audi, the tilt steering wheel needs more "down" positions than "up". I could not even imagine a person say well over 6 feet tall having to push that seat all the way back and the steering wheel would be even further from the driver's thighs. I remember the day where cars in the 70's and 80's you could just about have that steering wheel laying in your lap. ...Oh and the accelerator pedal is very heavy

Another quality review as we've come to expect from you, Sofyan. Any thoughts on the long-term reliability surrounding these complex common rail diesels that VAG's currently using? Their previous pumpe düse designes weren't known for being overly reliable and the long-term (10+ years) durability of the TDI concerns me a bit. Will the fact that VAG uses a timing belt for more precise fuel combustion in this engine generation add to additional maintenance worries down the line too?

I'm curious, how do you compare the overall driving experience between the Audi A3 and the Mazda3 s Grand Touring? I'm in the market for a new car, and I really want all of the premium features and especially the technology features (particularly adaptive cruise control, which is a must-have for me). The price is not really an issue; for me it's more about having a good driving experience that has as few compromises as possible. How would you characterize the driving experience of both cars? Which one is sportier, which one is more comfortable for long drives, which one handles better, which one feels quicker, etc.?
@ahastar11419 жыл бұрын
So just out of curiosity, I read something that you would have to drive a diesel vehicle for at least 80-100 thousand miles from new to offset the upcharge of the Diesel engine vs an unleaded as well as the more expensive fuel price in North America and make it financially a better choice. Anyone know if this true?
@Justin-ig8cd9 жыл бұрын
Two of the major costs of car ownership are fuel and depreciation. In the U.S., diesel is comparable to premium gasoline prices (your alternative for any other Audi). If you consider resale value, the TDI would be a smart choice as it holds value especially well and you get better mpg in the meantime. If you are leasing (with little chance of having equity at the end of the lease term), then you should weigh the difference in fuel costs between the two motors offered (base on the number of miles you drive) vs the difference in monthly lease payment.

SlipknotMaggot0526 Isn't diesel taxed more in the US? At least that's what I heard.
@geragosian8059 жыл бұрын
SlipknotMaggot0526 theproweb No, diesel has tax incentives through much of Europe, which makes it much cheaper to operate. With that said, they're likely going to take those incentives away as opinions about diesel changes due to the smog problems created by diesel. www.autoblog.com/2015/02/02/uk-admits-supporting-diesel-cars-was-wrong-decisi/ www.bloomberg.com/bw/articles/2014-06-05/london-leads-eu-in-car-pollution-diesel-fuel-blamed www.autoblog.com/2014/12/01/france-moves-to-ban-diesel/ Also, gasoline preference is not just a US thing, most nations with strict rules on NOx, high demands for the lowerest sulfur diesel, and with few incentives to lower diesel operating costs, prefer gasoline in light vehicles. Eg: Japan and Australia largely buy gasoline for passenger cars like the US.
@sic22l9 жыл бұрын
Geragosian "diesel has tax incentives" weren't based on fuel but other running costs like road taxes etc. In Europe diesel and gasoline are similarily taxed. In the US though there are more taxes on diesel that's why it's more expensive. PS. There's very high demand on low sulphur diesel in Europe.

Would you choose Audi A3 over the Acura ILX (newest model) with similar specs? Thanks.
@theredline9 жыл бұрын
We'd go with the A3 Quattro model over the ILX simply because we love the interior and AWD of the Audi versus the ILX.
@waruilewi9 жыл бұрын
***** The A3 interior is more attractive than the ILX but I think the new '16 ILX is a better value and certainly more reliable after the warranty ends. To get adaptive CC, lane assist, etc. you're looking at Prestige line packages which is only available in NA Audi's top trim. The A3 counters with more upscale optional appointments like power folding mirrors, a Houdini-like hidden nav screen, panoramic sunroof, leather seats with thigh extensions and LED ambient lighting that Acura lacks. As a commuter, the ILX wins in the transmission dept, as the DCT (S-tronic) 6-speed slightly lurches about in stop-and-go rush hour traffic, while the 8-speed DCT in the Acura has a torque converter to offer noticeably smoother delivery. Maintenance on the Audi S-tronic DCT like VW's DSG is every 40k and will set you back about $300-400 while the Acura DCT is good for 100k. For more efficient commuting, the ILX also has better gas mileage over the 2.0 TSI, Slurpee-capable upholders, multi-view rear camera, visor extenders and seating memory which are not available on any A3. Then again for inclement conditions the AWD on the 2.0 TSI may come in handy, and the A3 ride quality and interior noise levels at speed both better the Acura. Smaller turning radius and shorter overall length with the A3 both help in tight urban conditions. For audio with only 15 minutes' listening, I consider ELS surround and Bang + Olufsen offerings to be a wash. Initial fit and finish is also superior on the Audi but longer-term durability sides with the non-turbo Acura. So yeah, I can't decide either...

Doesn't owning a diesel save lots of money on fuel economy and cost depreciation? Glanced over two comments that savings are negligible yet I am staring at a peer-reviewed study at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute based on 36 months of data. Are they way off?
@47driver359 жыл бұрын
Arthur E. Michalak This Michigan review based much of their research on ESTIMATED miles per gallon and limited the review to three to four year ownership. While the three to four year ownership is close to an American average (five years), it leads me to wonder if Americans own a car for five years because the car needs major mechanical work by them, or are they bored? There is an error while using estimated mileage reports for cars. Because, most folks report much higher mileage than the sticker says on the diesel engines. My 2 liter said I'd get 36 on the HWY, but after 120,000 miles, I am still getting 40. In the city, it said 28, but I get 35. I drive my car like I stole it too. I do believe the Michigan study is skewed. Here is my data. My operating (not purchase) budget for a fleet of 6 midsize cars was 52 cents per mile per car over five years. When I swapped to Jetta TDI, this price dropped to 38 cents per mile per car over the last six years. that savings is massive! And I will keep this fleet 50% longer, saving the cost of purchase.
@steph35789 жыл бұрын
Ok look, people buy hybrids to save money on gas. If someone bough a diesel than they would have to pay almost double on gas. Diesel gas cost a lot more than regular.
@47driver359 жыл бұрын
Steph Diesel isn't Gas. It isn't double either. On average, it is 30% more, with 40% better mileage. I bought mine to save money, and so far I have. I don't have to worry about all those batteries I'm throwing away when the car is dead. I don't charge it with coal and don't worry about energy waste from the distance of the power plant to me either.

There's so much ignorance in this review. Not having spark plugs doesn't mean easier maintenance. When it comes to maintenance cost, they can be just as much, and often much more expensive to service mainly because of emissions systems. Also, 230-something pound feet of torque in a 2.0L turbo 4 is nothing to write home about. In fact, it is even less than many modern turbocharged gas engines with equal displacement.

well, diesel has a lot of advantage or disadvantage. unfortunately, if you want to buy real diesel, German car is only choice for the best. there are lots of people driving diesel around the world excepting US, Canada, or Russia. relatively diesel fuel is cheaper than gas excepting US or Canada. you guys are not familiar with diesel car anyway. that's why people has bias. of course, diesel car should be taken care well if you don't want to break it down. diesel even clean diesel euro6 whatever. diesel is just diesel. costing on maintenance is way more than gas. engine oil is twice. even transmission oil is more. glow plug is expensive than general spark plug as well. it's also carbon nightmare if you don't care. you should clean intake injector whatever for period of time. it's hassle. basically, diesel car is normally expensive than gas car.

absolutely no reason to buy the diesel version. slow and not frugal enough to make a meaningful difference

55 mpg hwy makes a difference. And it is much more frugal than any hybrid.
@Veyronp879 жыл бұрын
sic22l 55 is not a realistic normal driving average. the TDI is several grand more expensive AND diesel is a 1 dollar a gallon more expensive
@sic22l9 жыл бұрын
Veyronp87 It actually is (on the highway). TDI isn't much more expensive than CT200h, fuel price varies in different states (it's also seasonal).

Veyronp87 Slow? I regularly have set my cruise control to 120 mph on the autobahn and still get 30MPG. Now in the states, I get 40 MPG on a six year old car with 120,000 miles. I can't comprehend why folks don't do a bit of their own research before publicly speaking.
