You sure got lucky that day. I’ve been whale watching off Vancouver Island for 20 years and have seen some great sightings, but never as lucky as to see all 3 resident pods together. These Orca and the Humpbacks and not forget the Greys are my passion. So Thankyou for posting such a breathtaking video

Yes, it is so fantastic to see such beautiful creatures. This video was on TV as well as you tube! It was also on local news, 5 pods of them were in active pass just showing off! Everyone was so excited about them as they seem to be on the increase with baby whales close to mom!

What an experience that must of been!! So jealous!!! ;)

thanks Stephanie, last year was not a good year for our resident orca, not many salmon returned, some youngsters died. Hopefully this season will be better. They're spending a lot of time out in the open ocean at the moment but as soon as the salmon start to show up they'll be back!
@stephaniedaigle59306 жыл бұрын
Gary Cullen I really hope so! What time of year do they come? And how do u know when they pass behind your place? Do they go everyday? Or ?how can u time this perfectly so u know u will be able to see them?
@stephaniedaigle59306 жыл бұрын
Gary Cullen it"s Beautiful to see more than one pod hanging out together! It's not "natural" for them to do so...so to be able to witness this right here is One amazinv miracle of nature :)

The local residence can come through Active Pass at any time but more so from May through Sept. There is a network of people that live along their route through the Gulf Islands and they keep in touch with each other to let us know if they are heading our way. Their normal routine when the salmon are running is they start in Haro Straight off San Juan Island WA and head north into Canada's Gulf Islands. Then up past Pender Island, Mayne Island, into Active Pass heading east (Galiano is on the north side of Active Pass, Mayne on the south) then north east out into the Georgia Straight (some maps have the new name "Salish Sea") to the mouth of the Fraser River where there are lots of salmon especially later in the season when they are heading up the river to spawn. From the Fraser river they head back south to Point Roberts WA (and interesting place cut off from the rest of the USA, look it up) back down through the San Juan Island to Haro Straight where they tend to hang out before repeating the whole trip. In peak salmon season they may go past our place at least once every 24 hours (often at night though) and sometimes we've seen all 3 pods come through in one day at different times or on a rare occasion like the video, all together as a superpod. They really are creatures of habit, unlike the transients, and they almost always come in close to shore where we are located. Look up those areas on a map and you'll get a pretty good picture of their routine in salmon season.
