Lewis M Very well said I like the AMG line but the interiors need work, buttons, knobs gear shifter are just in odd places even they put a modern look to the air vents that stretch across the front dash there from the 70s. But that does not mean I’m hating on them if like BMW has flaws as well but in my opinion the BMW M-Cars are what I like better my F90 M5 is amazing. Ok I agree let’s hate on Lexus and maybe Audi’s so we don’t single one out .

First and foremost don’t listen to those little boys that make rude/immature comments they just don’t know any better . Thanks for reviewing this car as I bought it for my daughter as a graduation/ 17 th Bday gift for her first car. I have to agree the interior dose need improvements like you I drive M-cars much better qty. You do an amazing job and the fact you are not Bias to any one brand make your videos authentic and true reviews. It’s ok you sold your M4 the Porsche was a great choice but I’ll stay with my new F90 M5.

Great review. I'm a longtime BMW owner/fan as well and am glad you called them out on the 3 series interior. It really is subpar. Ended up getting a 5 series this time around because I just couldn't stand how cheap the 3 felt. (And no, they didn't squeeze more money out of me with this "upsell" gambit; the lease on my 5 was cheaper than a similar 3 at the time as well similar Mercedes and Audis). Even the much maligned e36 had a somewhat higher quality feeling interior. To add on to what you pointed out: -the plastic around the gear lever is very hard and cheap. IN past 3 series they would use the same trim as on the dashboard (wood, aluminum, high gloss, etc) for that area. -the 80s pixelated font on the climate controls -the Hard plastic on the lower B pillars -Seat belts aren't height adjustable (even my base Nissan Altima rental car had that feature) -No button to sync the dual climate controls (not a deal breaker, but an odd omission) -No leather gaiter on the base automatic shift lever (sport automatic lever does have this however) -The plastic piece under the climate ctonrol has 2 noticeable seams on either side. almost looks like it could slide out, but of course it doesnt -No button to release the catch on the center armrest; you just pull on it and it feels pretty cheap. Past 3 series always had a button atleast. (I could go on, but that's enough for now. I honestly think that a base VW Golf (not even GTI) has a nicer, higher quality interior than the 3). I agree on the base steering wheel looking and feeling terrible. But I haven't been impressed with the Msport wheel either (similar but not identical to the wheel in your M3). Because of the shape of the hub, you can see the hard shiny plastic on top of the steering column, and the buttons don't feel very good (some of mine acutally wiggle around). Plus they use plastic instead of aluminum on the silver colored trim piece on the lower spoke. It actually squeaks when pressed. Fortunately, I think this piece is different in the M cars (real metal as well). And as far as exterior, the front-end still hastn' grown on me either. In particular, the hood line looks somewhat porpoise like in the way it bulges and then plunges downward. And the front seam is poorly placed and often uneven. Would it have killed them to bring the hood sheet metal all the way to the grill as in the past (or even as they currently have it on the x3?). I have to disagree on the cruise control buttons being a great feature. Yes, the 1 and 5 mph increments are nice, but I much preferred the stalk they used on the e90. No need to turn it on, and saved room for other controls on the steering wheel. Also find the knob to sroll and select music somewhat annoying. Half the time it says "loading..." and you have to use the radio controls to switch tracks, and most of the time i just want to skip forward or back 1 song (which the old up/down buttons worked better for). Why not have a scroll wheel for the volume as Audi does?
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 9 жыл бұрын
I agree, the scroll wheel should be for volume not track selection. A rocker switch for next/previous track works so much better.

Needs to be msport or m to get that ace wheel, later f30 seats are really comfy once adjusted correctly and you have adjustable lumbar support. Dakota leather is not as plush as the individual or those found on the m models agreed. Would be ace if they would fit same seats as in the latest 5 series.

So funny hearing about people's reactions to the C-Class. I love that you're not biased, the positives of the cars deserve all the recognition they can get! C 300 was very impressive to say the least. I can't wait until the new A4 is released, then compare it to these other two. Ps. I don't like those F30 headlights either, they look awkward in the middle.

Exactly. I test drove an F30 335i and the interior felt SO cheap!! I owned a previous generation E90 328i and it felt so much more expensive. The 5 series is classic Bmw. The feeling it gives you reflects it's price.

Thanks for the review! Image quality of most angles is just fantastic. One thing i would suggest, when you're doing the split-screen with the specs on the right, maybe try and keep the video on the left in the correct aspect ratio, even if that makes it smaller vertically. It doesn't look good all squished together like that.

I really like the 3 series. I am not sure why so many people are hitting on the interior but I think its unique and matches the charisma of the car overall. I also find the LCD wide screen display pretty impressive matched with iDrive. What i wish is if BMW could make that amazing M sport steering wheel standard on all their products (free of cost) whether M or not.

I've owned both the old model (2008) and the new one (2015). A few comments I can also share: This car definitely feels wider- both inside the cabin and on the outside. The trunk is noticeably shorter and gives it more a 5-series look. Back is definitely bigger. This car, albeit a smaller engine, is definitely quicker. The steering isn't as numb in sport mode. It definitely tightens up as you go Eco -> Comfort -> Sport. I always felt the 2008 model had too tight of steering (it was completely mechanical). BMW might have overcorrected. Damping is definitely softer, as Nick described. It's harder to drive on snow. I can't even imagine how fast this car would be with sport tires on it? Maybe 5 seconds? You can easily get 30 mpg on this car on the highway, even with AWD. The skirts are mated towards the back. Literally press the the side skirts near the back rear tires with your hand and you'll get lots of wobble.

Totally agree, the leather sucks it feel like sand paper, the steering wheel feels cheap if you don't opt for the m-sport package, and everything you touch feels like cheap plastic. This is coming from a 328d M-sport wagon owner, other than that the car fees solid.
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, I just don't understand it, there is no reason for them to cheap out at this price point.
@pcasso87
@pcasso87 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed, i paid 53k for the wagon and it feels way cheaper than my E-92 M3. I was so close on trading in the M3 for the M4 but i convinced myself to wait for the M2 and get the wagon as a daily driver. M2 looks to be a bit more promising than the M4 as a dedicated weekend clubracer. Its funny because i also like bmw but i do have to agree with all the stuff you pointed out, the steering feels way softer than the e9x 3 series and you can definitely tell there is a ton of body roll. MB continues to impress me but i really think the cla amg will be no competitor to the M2 and im not talking about numbers just plain driving enjoyment.
@NickMurray

N-SPEC .Racing Oh the CLA AMG will not be in the running next to the M2. A bit more power, a locking diff and more aggressive looks and it could be the best in the range

Great review! Nick, the push button start on all vehicles today don't require you to hold down the button to engage the starter. The starter electronics and the push button are not directly connected in any way. The push button is only a unit that sends a signal to the ECU to tell the car to "start the engine". The ECU does its checks and then engages the starter for the required time to start the engine. I don't know why it bothers me so much to see people hold down the start button as if it's some old school momentary switch. I see people do this all the time.

You know why I do that, because in my girlfriends VW Jetta which has push button start, it does require you to keep holding down the button until it has started. Annoying indeed but I get into the habit of holding it if I am not in my M4.

Rob Booth Automotive That you must hold the start button down to engage the starter? I don't understand why it would be designed this way. All of the Japanese and German cars I have tested only require a quick push of the button to initiate the engine start.

A lot of your negatives can be adressed by selecting the Msport package - this will give you sports seats, M steering wheel, sport suspension to get rid of body roll, improved steering feel. Also MSRP is higher but most people lease. BMW has very aggressive leases esp on the 3 compared to Audi and MB, which actually make it less expensive.

As ever, great job. Really appreciate the work that clearly goes in to these videos. Hope, there is some more 'older' German cars in the list - Loved the 6 series and the 356 videos especially. Also, be good if there was some way that people who appreciate the work and are happy to make some small contribution to what must be a fair investment you make in hardware etc to keep making the production values better could do so. So, maybe set up one of the virtual tip jar type services? (Not everyone on the internet thinks its the end of the world if something they value that requires work; thought; investment requires the cost of a cup of coffee from them occasionally).

Hey Nick, great videos! Could you do an in-depth review of the M235i with all options ? I love the BMW M line, would love to have a M4 but can't afford that, I would like to see what kind of tech options the M235i has, like collision avoidance, blind spot detection, lane keeping and so on. There is a lot of videos talking about the M235i performance but none of them speak about the technologies onboard the car it self. thanks much! greeting from Brazil!

Great review Nick. I like the fact that you go into details like that, espacially regarding the engine and the interior. And of course, honesty is always appreciated. But I wish you had dedidacted a part of this video to the xdrive system (maybe you have in other videos). Many videos are available out there on this system, but what is your opinion? I mean we wouldn't ask a 3-series to be as efficient on the snow as a Range Rover, but is it good enough to go skiing and face roads in a snow storm? Keep up the great work.

@Nick Murry, Thank you for the video. It was much needed, for me especially. I have an E90 330i W/ M package and the car is good, but it's got a very firm ride. And living in atlanta with that car, where most of the roads, if you live in the heart of the city are full of pot holes. I drove a 2016 328i rear wheel drive as my loaner car when i took my car to service at the dealer. The seats are really uncomfortable to sit in, especially for me because i have a herniated disk. E90's seats compared to F30 are extremely comfortable. The steering is also very light. I don't know about the body roll that you talked about. I didn't feel any when i took sharp turns. 17 inch wheels are actually better if you want the ride to be smooth if you live in the city like Atlanta. Did you get a chance to drive it in the snow to see how useful the four wheel drive was? And do you think I should upgrade to a 328i drive? My car has already clocked 137k miles and an upgrade is much needed.

lol its 2017 and i am still watching it. nicely done, nick ! Just have few personal opinions~ I own both M4 and f30 328xi sport line. I would say that the 328xi steering feeling is much better than m4. I can easily feel the hydraulic assistant when i turn the steering wheel, but not in M4. And the body roll you mentioned in the video, i am not sure if it is caused by the snow tire. The 328 I have has 19 summer wheel, and i felt the car is quite firm from daily drive perspective~. i think the body control in 328 is absolutely superb,much better than new c300( i owned c300 before the 328, i traded in the c300 because of the rubbish sound system). u should try it again when the summer tire is on. :)

So disappointing for car in that price range. especially if you're not specing up the engine/drivetrain, the interior HAS to carry the cost of the car. Interesting review, thanks Nick. I have the 3.28i Touring - rear wheel drive. The engine and gearbox are brilliant. I am less fussy about the interior so it works for me. It is hard wearing and intuitive, the twin hatchback making it a very practical car that's capable of the occasional astonishing blast of acceleration when needed. My real issue is road noise. On perfect tarmac, the car is quiet, with a bit of wind noise around 80mph. But a droning, wearing roar from the run flat tyres on most GB roads. This is my third 3 series Touring, and by far the best - but the dBs may send me off to look elsewhere for the next car. Did you get to drive the Golf R you mentioned? A video on that would be fab.

Awesome review! I completely agree with your comments on the interior - I am a pennyless graduate and always have to look at the price tags first when looking at cars. As you know BMWs are quite expensive here in Europe (even used ones) and to then be served such a dull and early 2000s interior (both from looks and features) is disappointing. And having to add it all as extras is in my position (which many consumers are) not really an option. I don't agree with your comment on the headlights - I think it is one of the most appealing design elements of this car. However, I'd definitely choose the LED version. If at all, I don't like the rear of this model. I still think the E90s are one of the best looking BMWs ever.

Im surprised you don't get a back up camera. I drove a (2013) 535i and it didn't even have one. I honestly don't see a $40k-$50k car when I look at a 3 series but, I still love BMW. Will you be able to do a review of the Lexus or Cadillac equivalent?

Good video Nick. I have a few questions/comments. I was wondering why BMW would understate their engine specifications. During the video you compare the interior to that of the MB C300 and the BMW M-series but also allude to previous generation BMWs throughout. I have searched high and low for a authentic comparison between the BMW F30 and E90 with little success although Road & Track has an article that is quite good. Can you compare the new 3-series to the previous generation addressing specifically the 328i xDrive? I own a 2011 328i xDrive 6-speed manual and would really like to hear your thoughts.

hey, Nick, I've been searching for a car and found this 2015 BMW 328ix that you reviewed, so with 43000 miles, do you think that this car would hold for another couple of years? or should I look for a newer? German cars depreciate quickly, at least here, in Canada. (3 years 50%) thx, Gregoz

You have very fair points Nick. I would like to comment on a few things though. The reason this car is so much faster than the Mercedes is probably because the Mercedes in reality is heavier. A Swedish car magazine weighed the new C220 CDI Wagon. It's rated at 3560 lb but when they weighed it using the same method as the law states (full tank, driver 70 kg) it weighed 4100 lb!!!! It COULD be the same here, not saying it is. But looking at the performance it probably is a bit overweight. And yeah the BMW engine probably is a bit stronger. -I really don't get how a 328i have halogen headlights as standard, xenon should be standard across the range. This really hurts the brand in my eyes, seeing these cheap-ass 3-series everyday pains me. -Dynamic Handling Package is a MUST for this type of car, even though with the xDrive you CANNOT get the lower and stiffer suspension, you do get adaptive dampers though, which are better. -The "Comfort" base seats are truly awful, get a sport line for the sport seats, they're amazing! -Sensatec leather is actually a lot nicer... I would never pay $1400 extra för the crappy BMW standard leather. -The "leather" on the steering wheel (is it really leather? lol) can be upgraded for $60 if you choose a "Line" to individual Merino steering wheel with the soft leather in my country (Sweden). But looking at the US configurator this isn't even an option? Weird!

1. BMW Dakota leather still has the marks on it from where the jockey was beating it. Honestly, I'd rather have the leatherette. 2. For BMW the standard seats and suspension are pretty much crap. You have to get the sport seats and suspension.

Hi Nick! Thanks so much for responding - happy to chat/discuss via email if you are interested - not sure how this works through youtube. I moved permanently to the U.S. in January this year for work and was looking for a good car channel by youtube authors who understand and love cars. If you ever want to exchange any thoughts via email happy to do so. Have a great evening!

I really wish BMW would ditch the Halogen Headlights and make the Xenons standard....halogens makes the car look so cheap or at least add it to the premium package or something because I rarely see any with them on the road.

Hi Nick, Just ordered a BMW 330i Xdrive. It this not part of the LCI for 2016? They said it would battle some of the steering and body roll on the current F30? Would you test it or is the change too small to motivate a new testing?
