2015 Chrysler 300 "Service Shifter" light: Not a Bad ESM

In this video I get challenged in this tough diagnostic for the communication code that the 2015 Chrysler 300 had for an Electric Shifter Module not talking. But finally after failing and becoming a parts changer, I buckle down and diagnose it properly.

I’m currently an owner of a 2016 Chrysler doing this exact thing shop told me the knob underneath was dirty with a liquid spill and cleaned it up and is now up and running

Great step by step trouble shooting. I am retired now from the instrumentation field in the paper industry which involved lots of troubleshooting electronic equipment. One of our instructors commented on first step in trouble shooting equipment was ensuring good supply voltages, good grounds. Second step was to insure all wiring connections had good integrity. Will save you a lot of headaches. Again, great video.

Right now I have a 2014 Chrysler 300 that intermittently will not go into Park. Got any ideas? How difficult is it to get that center council up to get at that coca cola damaged connector?

Issue resolved. I want to pass along how my problem (shifter won't go into park) was resolved in case anyone else has this problem. This generated a PO850 code and check engine light. This was a real freak situation, It just so happens that a small stone had kicked up and got wedged between the emergency Park Release arm located on transmission and the transmission case. I have the 8 speed transmission. This caused the arm located on the transmission to reposition itself slightly. The Park/Neutral switch that tells the computer all is well is apparantly located on this arm internally in the transmission. The computer TCM (Transmission Control Module) thought the emergency Park Release lever in the car had been pulled and wouldn't let me shift into park. The car actually did go into Park but the indicater light on the handle wouldn't come on and confirm this to the TCM. I had taken this to Chrysler garage and they wanted to sell me a $2200 transmission. I was pretty sure transmission was ok since I could took it down the road and all internal shifting of the transmission appeared normal, I than took it to a little shop out in the country by me who charged me $50/hr rather than $140/hr that those so called expert Chrysler mechanics charge, Ended being a $180 stone . Problem solved. PS: I would recommend this little shop in the country to anyone. That kid was sharp and didn't have all the accreditations and schooling these supposed Chrysler mechanics had..

Hello Sadel, a question: at the 29:36 mark the BUS voltage dropped when you plugged in the ESM. That surprised me as I expected no change. Is the drop just due to the resistance of the ESM? I figured that all good modules would not affect the BUS voltage. I’m curious as to why it dropped? Ps- as I type this I have not watched the rest of the video. Thanks!

Thanks for watching, the cause of the "drop" when the esm was plugged in, is due to further stabilization of the bus with both modules are now plugged in,

bypassed the connector and tied the wires together
