2015 Ford F150 Battery relearn when installing a new battery

Newer vehicles require a relearn procedure when installing a new battery. As the old battery wears out the alternator will increase its output to compensate. Nonsense. Ford F-150; Install new battery. Procedure must be completed within ten seconds. Turn key to on position, do not start engine. Flash high beams five times. Press and release brake pedal three times. Battery light in dash will flash three times within fifteen seconds, indicating reset complete. I have two F150’s and one F250 and this works every time, with no issues.

Changed my battery yesterday the owners manual said after changing battery lock the doors and let vehicle sit for 8 hours to relearn voltage. No issues

You can still do battery installs yourself, you just have to read your manual. Install the new battery when you are done for the night. Turn off all accessories, power down everything that can be powered down. Keep the keys away from the vehicle (as to not confuse it and give it a good night's sleep). Now just make sure it is locked and fully powered down and leave it alone for at least 8 hours. The owner's manual tells you how to do this. No you don't need a $10k tool or enter in 1990s cheat codes (5x flash, 3x brake) No you don't need to cast a magic spell or empty your wallet, just make the battery is approved for your truck and read the manual. Shut everything down, lock it up, and let it sleep.

Yes. The alternator needs to be reset so that it won't overcharge the new battery. We use a snap on scan tool, but you may be able to reprogram the computer without the use of a scan tool. Not all cars/trucks do this. This particular truck needed to be reprogrammed.

How stupid some of these new features are. Cars are supposed to be smart cars but in actuality have gotten dumber. If there are other manufacturers who don't have these features I want one of those cars.

I assume you do the BMS reset after new battery is installed but prior to first start with new battery? Or does it matter?

Correct. Once the new battery is installed but before you drive the truck, you want to do the reprogram.

Can't you just plug in a 12v power supply to cars OBD port to keep computer powered during battery change??

New vehicles have alternators that increase voltage output as the battery ages. It's not about keeping the memory alive. It's about resetting the alternator back to its lower voltage output so you don't damage the new battery.

I've heard you don't have to do that and I've Watched videos changing batteries and it looked OK then I heard you have to. I'm confused, what's your thoughts.

It all depends on the specific car. This particular truck had to be reset. Some European cars like BMW and Audi have to be reset also. Their charging systems increase voltage as the battery gets older and weaker. If you install a new battery in those systems and don't reprogram them, it can overcharge and cause your new battery to be damaged.

@@WinterAutoRepair 5.0 had auto start stop which is AGM battery. Those require reprogramming. My 15’ Lariat with 3.5EB no auto start stop has a standard non AGM battery. No reprogramming needed.

great video! i have a 2013 ford explorer, key start. AFter changing the battery it wont start, dash lights up but no start at all. no turn over or anything. we tried the bms reset (flash brights, press brakes) , we tried letting it sit for 8 hours (didnt lock the doors though, does that make a difference?) ,, it still wont start,, it started fine prior. --- it sat for a few months without being started,, the original battery was dead so we swapped it out with a loaner battery just to make sure it would start and it did, no problem,, took out the loaner battery and bought our own battery (bought from ford made sure it has 12v), put that one in now no start. any ideas? someone suggested maybe the key has to be reprogrammed

Honestly, it sounds like the battery is no good. If it is brand new, it could have a bad cell from being dropped or sitting on the shelf for a while. It has enough juice to light up the lights and accessories but not enough to crank the engine. I don't know what size battery your car requires but make sure its large enough (Cold Cranking Amps) is very important also. Take the battery back and exchange it and let us know how you make out.

Absolutely! So batteries have volts and amps. The battery will be 12 volts its entire life. If you look at the sticker on top, the battery will say how many amps and cold cranking amps the battery is when new. As the battery gets older, the amps will go down lower and lower. The average battery is around 650 cold cranking amps. After 2 years it will be closer to 600. After 4 years, it will be around 500. Once it hits 450 amps, you will get a no start condition. It will run your radio and headlights, but not the starter for your engine. At our shop, we test every battery, alternator, and starter before working on the car or changing the oil. Once the battery hits 25% life remaining, we recommend replacing it. On a 650 amp battery, that would be around 500 amps. This prevents a no start condition in hot or cold weather. I hope that helps explain it a little better.

Hundreds of way cheaper scanner can do relearn battery, throttle relearn and all those stuff 😂 you don't need a snap on 10k to do that that's a damn lie 😂 even with one of my scanners that costed me 100$ have those functions 😂
