2015 GMC Sierra turns off, stalls/dies randomly while driving. electrical problem finally solved!!

GMC randomly stalled out and electrically dead. Always started right back up but the problem persisted when turning corners slow. Here is what I did to fix the problem for good!
Also, make sure you respray the area with flat black paint to prevent rust from building back up. That makes a huge difference with issues like this.

UPDATE.....the problem came back. Took it to the dealership. They determined that there was a extreme voltage drop coming from the lead battery cables. They replaced the negative and positive cables that are at the beginning of where the lines connect to the battery. The problem is completely solved now 100%. It's been months, no issues whatsoever. Total cost was about $300. Warranty paid for most of it. Those negative and positive cables coming off the battery goes bad often. They actually have kits to replace them. I was in and out the dealership in a couple hours. Hope this helps.

It does. I was just discussing with someone how the negative battery cable can go bad or corrosion on inside. Mine was not old and the connection was horrible. Either one will fix it. Thicker gauge wire also works best

So glad to find this!!! We were pulling into a parking lot recently and KAPUT mid-turn. Horns were honking and I am sure a few middle-finger salutes were given from the people behind us as we tried to restart. It had been happening rarely - but this was the most terrifying occurrence. My 2016 Tahoe kepy randomly cycling through service codes on my dash (service power lift gate, service stabilitrak, service brake assist, open driver and passenger window and then close), the radio screen would go black, my car would power surge going down the road where I would have to put it in park and restart. The only time it would happen more often was when I was parking, making a right hand turn. It would snatch the steering wheel back to the middle and even made my brakes stop working!!! I took it to the dealership and they wanted $1000 to replace the negative battery cable and a fuse block but didn’t have the parts handy and they weren’t sure if it was even the problem. I took it somewhere else and they said I needed a new BCM. I watched this video and my husband climbed under the passenger side and you wouldn’t believe the clumped up crap that came off of it! My low voltage reading is gone and it hasn’t done it since, thanks so much, it was such a scary problem to have that literal professionals didn’t even think to fix.

Thats why I do what I do. Look under the drivers side and there is one more right under the drivers door. I believe that one controls the fuel injectors and a few other things according to a diagram. My truck started a fuel injector voltage thing and I cleaned that one. That problem stopped. Make cleaning those grounds part of your annual maintenance and dont forget to give it a light coat of flat black paint so it doesn't rust. Thanks for watching!!

It definitely cure my issues. I also painted mine since i noticed the grounded to bare metal and rust buildup can also cause it repeat itself overtime. Any primer/paint combo will do. Get some krylon flat black when u are done and give it a light coat and call it good.

My 2015 GMC Sierra was doing the same thing. Shutting down completely in traffic and during sharp turns at low speeds. I went and pulled that ground, cleaned the bolt, all contact points and re-installed. Today everything seemed to work fine with no issues. It's hard to believe it was this simple. what I don't understand is, the ground wasn't loose. So I don't understand how the contact to the frame could have diminished. But I'm not complaining. A dirty ground is not a good ground. Because of its position, it can pick up road dirt especially if you live in country. I madebit part of my annual checkups and it hasn't been a problem since. Also, the ground for the fuel injectors I found under the drivers door. Clean that one up as well. Thanks for watching!!

@@uncledave287 man that is a good question. I dont get it either. I would say its a bad design for sure. Just a note, after you get it down to the bare metal, put it back together. Then spray it with black spray paint with primer and that will keep it from rusting and acting up again. I did that and it worked like gold!

After you clean the grounds on the frame, make sure you give it a light coat of spray paint. I noticed that you can get rust buildup if you don't coat it after you clean it off. After I cleaned it the first time, I noticed rust starting to form because the metal is constantly exposed to natural elements. So I sanded it down again and gave it a light coat of krylon black paint. The primer paint mix. Never had a rust problem again and truck cutting off never happened again. I've been on a 2 13.5 hours drives since and truck operated flawlessly. Hope that helps

After cleaning multiple grounds, I still had the same issue. After doing some research online, I found that the 14-17 model trucks have a recall on their electric power steering. And it stated the exact same issues we are all having. So I took it to the dealership and they reflashed the EPS module. And i haven’t had a problem since.

I haven't seen that in the tech bulletin but I would rule it out. Still have not had an issue since I did mine. After you clean it, you need to repeat a light coat of paint primer to prevent rust. It costs nothing to do that, but your findings are worth looking into if fixing the grounds is not successful. Thanks for your input. GM owners appreciate it!

How about for the fog lights is there any connected grounds or power not getting any power already check fuses and relays not getting power

On those i would check for power at the fuse with the fuse in. Get a volt meter and verify you have power there. Since fog switch has multiple functions, dont rule that out. Could be faulty. Then unplug light and check voltage at plug with voltmeter. If no power at plug, trace wire back as best you can. Sometimes pigtail connector is bad. At least it was on my 05 before i replaced it. Pull codes with an advanced code reader and start there. There is also a ground undercover drivers door. Make sure that one is good also

No i did not. The ground is a double ground so you dont have to. If it makes your feel better, take the negative cable off and the battery then the other side and clean it.

I have been having this problem with my 2015 Sierra for a couple of months now. originally I took it to a mechanic and they said the alternator was bad, so had it replaced. Having the same issue where it just shuts down. probably every other month or so. At the same time I am getting a code that says service air bag (maybe separate issue). Also on occasion I am losing power when the car is off since my the time in the truck is hours off. I have an appointment with dealership Friday but not feeling confident based on comments.

Just did this on my 17 Silverado, the wire was caked on both side with the factory frame wax. I really don’t even know how it was grounding anything for this long. Cleaned all the wax off the frame and connector. Have not had an issue since. The ground could be moved by hand so it wasn’t even tight from the factory

Not yet. It does sound like you may need to check your transfer cases. 4x4 trucks normally have 3 cases. One between thr front wheels, one in thr middle, and the rear axle. Make sure you service all those fluids so you dont lose one of them. On my older GMC, service 4wd meant one of them was low on gear oil fluid. Dont ignore that message. Also, thr stabilitrak message had something to do with my switch on the dash. I replacee mine and never got that message again.

Check all of them when you can. Its a voltage drop that may be caused by what is mentioned in the video.

My 2019 Silverado has done this twice in the last month at a 4 way stop light . Pull up to stop light waiting for green then boom 2-10 secs after initial stop complete electrical failure . First time it happened I was able to fire the truck up seconds after i realized what happened. The second time the truck wouldn’t fire up till after a cycle of the stop lights . I had traffic backed up 4 blocks . Truck was dead in the water . Then it just started up nothing on the information center regarding anything . Just weird

Yes! The suburban i believe have the same motor and set up. Follow your negative battery cable to where it attaches on the frame. Clean that off and hit it with some flat black spray paint so it does not rust and act up again

Replace your negative ground cable off the battery. Someone reported months ago that their (-) cable was the problem. Last resort would be letting thr dealer look at it. Unfortunately they can't fix it if they cannot duplicate thr problem

You can always retain the hole and use a different bolt. Its just a part of the fram so it won't hurt anything

It could since everything needs a ground. It worth the time to get under there and clean them off and make sure you give it a light coat of black paint so metal don't rust and cause problems again

I was having the same issue, losing power a few seconds or minutes after driving. radio would stay on however. I cleaned the ground connection underneath passenger side by removing the 10mm bolt and cleaning the area with a wire brush, now it is idling very rough or not starting at all....... before cleaning the ground connection it would start right up no problem.... any ideas?

There is another one on the driver's side under the door that grounds the fuel injectors. I experienced something similar a few weeks ago when my truck started misfiring but the injectors and plugs turned out ok. After I looked at some diagrams, I found that other ground wire under the driver's door grounds a completely different set of electronics. clean that one and reset your battery. I hope that helps you as it did me. No problems since....

Thanks! I ended up cleaning the driver side frame ground as well. I found a Bulletin No.: PIT5405C that talks about removing rubber material from the grounds under the dash. There are various videos on YT explaining in detail how to remove the portion of the dash and clean up those grounds behind the speakers by removing the dampening/rubber material. I have since done that and the truck hasn't died at all. The truck is having trouble starting now, cranks but doesn't turn over until the third or fourth try. I've had the battery tested as well as the starter and they are fine, so I will be replacing the negative battery cable. Hopefully this does the trick and it starts right up. I may also be adding a ground cable from the neg battery to a grounding point.

My truck is having this issue. Did you happen to notice the voltage prior to this happening. I sent my truck to the dealership and they said they couldn’t duplicate it. I have driven it the last two days without it doing it but the voltage has stayed at 14 or above. Before I had noticed it had dropped below 14 and that’s when it seemed to do it. After you cleaned post does voltage stat up on gauge? Either way I’m going to clean the post like you did.

Thats the problem. It couldnt be duplicated by the dealer when i took mine in. An electrician i talked to said this kind of issue is a all or nothi ng deal. Normally an electrical failure that leaves no signs in a grounding problem. So i checked every ground i could find and found that one caked in road....whatever from years of stuff being thrown at it from the tire it sits behind. Still no problems til this day. I unhooked the ground, scraped the area with a putty knife, then a wire brush, then some decreaser and a rag. Did same to ground tip and bolt, then reinstalled. Problem hasnt been back since.

I did not notice because it was an instant alll or nothing deal. After I cleaned that ground, I didn't have any more electrical failures. Its been a months now. Make sure to give it a light coat of flat black paint to keep it from rusting. If you don't, the problem will occur again

Not sure how to answer your question. Its not losing ground completely. I highly recommend checking yours and cleaning the tip off and also where it bolts to the frame. If you live in a state where you could have rust issues, clean it up then spray it with a light flat black primer paint. Still have not had an issue since I made this video Also, there is another one on the driver's side under the front door. Clean that one as well. GOOD luck!

is it a double ground cable or a second single. also, dont forget about the other grounds mentioned on the truck. in stead of adding a second ground. replace the original one coming off the battery and make sure you have good contacts on both cables.

There was another video I saw where a guy had a pinched wiring harness that was causing issues. It was on a Tahoe in the rear above the spare tire. Hope that helps…

Happened to me this morning while pulling in to the parking lot at work. Lights, radio went off, and it died. Turned the key and got a message on the dash. It said to open drivers side window and then close. I did that and it started. Radio was changed to AM and clock was wrong. So I know it lost all power. I will trying this tomorrow. I was planning on doing an oil change any way.

Sounds like you may have more than a ground problem. The best thing to do us get it hooked up to a diagnostic computer that can look over the whole cars system. It may have codes in the history that have not turned the check engine light on. I checked someone's car today and that was the case. Let a dealer run a diagnostic on it. You dont have to fix everything. Start small and tackle them one at a time. If there are any. Good luck!

Ive gotta 2015 Suburban. I believe this is happening to mine as well. Sometimes my radio Flickers, And more often than usual the truck will be completely dead when I go to turn the key. I MEAN DEAD NADA NO POWER. As soon as I pop the hood and go over to the Negative battery terminal and wiggle the "BOTTOM" cable, the truck clicks back on. If the ground that you showed in the video which is behind the passenger side wheel leads to the smaller negative cable on the terminal, than I'm about 80% sure thats my issue. I will be cleaning it tonight. Any thoughts would be greatly accepted.

@@minni1094 I have not found it yet. But I think its the Negative battery cable. There are TWO leads that go into the 1 in the negative terminal. When my truck is dead sometimes. All i have to do is wiggle those cables and the truck will come alive. Its the craziest thing.

so i did everything in this video and although things definitely got better, it still acts up from time to time. after further research it seems that the Negative factory cable has some sort or problem over time and the ground wire itself is the problem. i have ordered a new factory ground wire and will replace and update here, you may also just be able to add a ground of your own to the system to alleviate the issue but just make sure you run it through the loop sensor. if it works that might save you $80 i just chose to order the factory cable with new sensor to eliminate the guess work. hope this helps and if the new cable remedy's it for me i will be back to update this comment ..

@@user-cx5jl5ze6d this was the problem. negative ground cable was bad somehow. you can either buy a new one and replace it or you can run your own custom from the battery, through the sensor to the firewall ground that goes to the engine. i believe the problem is in the cable end where the lead was cast for the terminal connector.. if yours dies/blacks out , dont touch anything just pop the hood and move your negative cable around and jump in and see if it starts...if you have connection you know that the cable is the problem.

I have a 2017 Sierra SLT with the 6.2, I've been having pretty much all the problems lol. losing steering power and all interior power as well. I lose all electrical power for a split second when i hit a bump or give it a little too much gas. So far I've replaced the negative battery cable..... pain in the ass.... and I've replaced the throttle body because I've been getting the reduced engine power issue. I'm at the point I want to rip my hair out because the dealership wants to keep the vehicle for over 2 weeks minimum and I have no other vehicles. Read plenty of things online about the g218 issue and this issue but they aren't it so I'm really not sure anymore. When it happens the door locks all go off and I get a info pop up saying either stabilitrak or service 4 wheel drive. Sometimes the steering wheel jerks even without the electrical problem which makes me think it may be a separate issue altogether. If anyone has an idea on a fix for this please let me know its a safety issue just as stated in the video.

Hey man, sorry you are having the same issues. I went through and found and cleaned every ground cable i could find. Thats a start. Electrical issues like ours has to do with electrical interruptions, which starts with bad grounds. I covered mine so hopefully that helps. I love my truck but this situation sucks.

Then once those are clean. Verify that your splash shield on the inside of your driver's wheel is still good. Your fuse box is right on the other side of it and if your splash shield is gone, you may have water damage on the bottom side of it.. Check the grounds first. This kind of issue is normally a bad ground on frame or coming off battery

When I clean and re-attach a grounding wire, it's even better to add some (copper or nickel based) ANTI SEIZE compound because these are ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS (dielectric grease us an INSULATOR). Grounding wires HATE being insulated. Then I'll spray paint over it. The color or glossiness is not important, but I do prefer high gloss because I imagine it sheds dirt and water better.
