It's amazing to me that old stories still hold relevance today, as if the human experience even when it advances still relies on the very basic fundamentals in order to experience a fulfilling life. So much of life is centered around escapism that we forget what we are escaping to.

It's the same story again and again. The same feelings, same emotions, same aspirations, they never change. Laws of human nature stays exactly the same, that's why history is a great source to learn about humanity. I recommend reading Robert Greene's books.

Using my rare free time on Christmas holiday to binge watch this playlist. Planning to go through the lectures between 2015 and 2017. I am in awe of his ability to understand and teach us about the human mind and soul. It’s even more exciting after having spent an entire year reading and listening to Ancient Greek and Roman epic, and through that getting ahold of Joseph Campbell’s Hero of a Thousand Faces, Jung, and now this playlist. Peterson helps me to understand Jung better, although at times I need help with understanding Peterson. Mostly I understand but it’s just his processing and delivery speed in comparison with mine. One of my goals for 2024 is to go through Jung’s works and practice Individuation. Watching Peterson and reading Jung is like learning about the soul in stereo. Thank you!

Mr. Peterson I hope you can see just how on time you are. You are bridging a major gap for the world. Bridgmakers of the world really deserve so much respect, they tear down walls and use the rubble to make bridges and roads to help people go places they might not have otherwise gone. Thank you for shedding light on subjects that have for so long been hidden in the darkness of mankind's own ignorance, innocent or otherwise.

I'm surprised that Professor Peterson didn't say, "This is what the story means in a sociological context." I imagine that the mythos has multiple meanings in multiple contexts. Excellent lecture. Thank you.

* conscientious people are more likely to have narrow interests * perhaps part of the reason that they aren't motivated in the lab is because researchers haven't tapped into their specific interests

It's incredibly interesting how the idea of Osiris and Horus seems to have been the Egyptian way of visualising perhaps the importance of having both the right wing/left wing for a successful state.

Horus got it. The Strong male son came to the rescue of Osiris. How many sons do we have among us who are strong enough to really be able to help the father (family) these days. Most are still children in their middle age still needing to learn the lessons of life but are so arrogant they believe they know everything far more than their parents.

If you dare, it’s worth reading the first few books of the Old Testament. You can get the theme of what God wanted, and it’s actually simple.

3:07 Here! I would actually argue that this is indicative pf the process of simplification brought on the abundance of pre-existing knowledge. It's a form of knowledge being utilized by the mind as wisdom in order to reduce the load on the system. Essentially, it's your mind "skipping the filler" and keeping note of whatever it may be that the individual in that instance perceives to be important. Much like visual peripheral focus, or the lack thereof. Question mark

Whilst I enjoy these lectures on myths and everything else. But I don't agree with JP's claim to the question "is it true?" is a tricky question. Because there are two types of truth both objective and subjective. Mythologies are subjective truths told in metaphorical style since they depict stories of human experiences. So the question "is it true?" is a pretty straightforward question. If someone asked me that question regarding a myth I would probably say that myth's are not meant to be taken objectively or literally but metaphorically as they present ideas or tell a story of similar experiences in a fanciful way like fantasy movies or novels.

And God looked at all he had created and saw that it was very good. Not perfect very good. Perfect is dead as a diamond. Good, or even very good is better, it is alive and dynamic, capable of change.

Would someone help me understand this? It just sounds like sophistry on the same level as, “war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength”. I get that it's supposed to be a poetic way of conveying an idea, but what are you trying to get across beneath the paradox?
@angelvollant864
@angelvollant864 9 ай бұрын
@@ha.alamin I wouldn't call it sophistry. This person seems to want to explain why God used the words "very good" when it comes to his opinion of the world he created. Why those words instead of "perfect"? Well, diamonds are pretty much "perfect". And those things are dead. Valuable and useful, but dead. The world, being alive, dynamic, and therefore, evolutionary, is not perfect. It can probably never be. Why is it changing? Because it's not perfect now. But it's trying to be through something like trial and error, which is essentially what evolution is. It's just a hypothesis of what God means by "good/very good" when he speaks of his creations. It also seems that you have a misunderstanding of what sophistry is. Though it's been 6 years, so I'm guessing you've evolved since then

The segment about authoritarianism intrigued me and I always wondered why academics state authoritarianism is "right wing" considering the two most genocidal 20th century regimes were Communistic. I think the difference is that right wing authoritarianism, like you said, is motivated by disgust. Its very xenophobic and wary of "outsiders" and seeks their destruction. Therefore, its traditionally psychopathic, in a hunt the prey fashion. It's sadistic. This is probably why Nazism is the regime we first think of when we hear "authoritarianism." The sadistic nature of it is deeply unsettling. Communism, on the other hand, does not seek the destruction of others. There is no others. Marxism opposes traditionalism, which divides up and separates groups based on cultural inclusion. Marxism seeks to destroy that. Its cultural death, wanting to turn everyone into a singular, monolithic mob. Right wing extremism might lead to totalitarian, predatory aggression. Sadism. Left wing extremism leads to nihilism, or death from within. Masochism This is why communism continues to squeak by, and people are still willing to return to it. It's not predatory per say, but its failures lead to the devouring of its own people.

Entropy applies to absolutely everything and things can full apart for every individual or organisation if you’re wilfully blind, untruthful, too corrupt, etc. You can reverse entropy in biology, increasing longevity and bolstering the immune system.

Many levels of abstraction over a long time lead to detailed layers of philosophy and wisdom and can be told in stories, as in the Bible. We can rewrite the World if we take it steady.

We were fortunate with AIDS but have done a lot better with COVID-19 due to improvements in Science and Virology and working together across the World. The Spanish Flu in 1919 was arguably as deadly as WW1, just not as bloodthirsty. So, we’ve come such a long way and the World has become immeasurably better in the last 50 years.

At around 44 minutes in when Dr. Peterson states "Imagine the hierarchy--top is pure--bottom is contaminated." Upon hearing this I can help but relate to something I read in Mark W. Muesse's "The Hindu Traditions" where the author states "Like the word Hinduism, the term caste is not an indigenous Indian word. Caste derives from the Portuguese word casta, which means 'pure' or 'chaste.' Although casta does not fit the Indian social system precisely, it aptly calls attention to the fact that the basis of the system is purity." Many Hindu adherents also engage in daily ritualistic bathing and the most common form of funeral among Hindus is open-air cremation.

Agreesive-diplomacy tries to prove that the stable value, argument,fact is not stable while the unstable value, argument , fact is stable. You do that so you can control the timing of events, that's why people bow to flags instead of humans, that's why people bow in science instead of scientists, that's why people try to bow in the right ideas in general to solve their problems. If you bowing to your needs, then you bound yourself to your needs, but specific needs leads to statical ideologies because ideologies are tools to extract specific goods and when a Ideology posses everything, you end up to lose the freedom of yourself and that leads at forms of war (your ideology is the good so everyone must bow to that) I believe that was the core hypothesis of Christians that led to that ideas, but maybe I am wrong, because I have a picture of that by the orthodoxs and not by all christians, maybe I am biased

America is a melting pot, but what kills me is that knowing that we are a diverse society, why are we constantly fighting with one another we live backwards we react as opposed to thinking first then reacting, people don’t speak to their neighbors. Aside from that most of our thoughts aren’t our own they come from TV, when personal experience should be providing most of our thoughts and actions.
