Easy choice for me. I would take the 3. The Mazda appeals much more in so many ways. A car that appeals to both head and heart.

I just bought a Mazda3 hatch last year and couldn't be more happy. I put in many hours of research and decided that it would be cheaper to repair and is more reliable than the Golf. I originally wanted the Golf as well, and I would still consider getting one in the future. In the end, both are great cars; Just expect to put a little more money into the Golf over the life of the car.

Funny you guys mention reliability and build quality. My wife has a 2010 Mazda CX-7 w/ 2.5 4-cyl (non-turbo). It has about 75,000 miles on it, and to this day, not a SINGLE issue has arisen. It is a lot of fun to drive, handles well, gets decent gas mileage (not great compared to newer cars), and it doesn't have a single squeak or rattle in its body. The thing is a tank. Not discrediting the VW, but I highly doubt VW makes a more reliable car.

As a Mazda employee and former Volkswagen employee I am quite disappointed with this test. Its almost like it was a Volkswagen bias test because you didn't touch on the benefits that true Mazda owners love. Here we strive for a fun economical drive. When someone is buying a car price is a huge factor and our vehicle is going to save you money down the road. When comparing labour and part costs Mazda is much much more affordable than vw and I have experienced this first hand being an owner of both. Our transmissions require no maintenance and we have a timing chain not a timing belt. You were touching up on how much space is unavailable in the Mazda in terms of back seat and head room. I am confident that our vehicle is still more comfortable to be in because we actually raise that front seat a little so when there is a passenger in the back you can get your feet comfortably under the seat for that little extra room to spread out and it is proven that customers enjoy that more than a little extra head room. And overall if you were that concerned about space enough to let that be the deciding factor you should have touched up on the fact that Mazda has a sedan model as well and in terms of cubic centimetres it actually has more space than the sport you were showing so we are more versatile and have more models to fit anyone's lifestyle. Finally the road noise. We appeal to customers who want a light vehicle for better fuel economy and a responsive drive. In return and our customers understand that they will be getting a little bit of road noise because we have less material between the driver and the road. I recommend an undercoat for anyone who this problem is a big issue for and even with the undercoat we will still be less expensive than Volkswagen. And on a related topic even though we have lighter and less material in the car as Volkswagen we still have a better safety rating which you didn't even touch up on which I am disappointed because that should be the most important part. Overall the vw might seem like the better choice at first glace but when you actually take some time and research what each brand is appealing to you will find that the Mazda will always be the better vehicle because we appeal to practical matters such as cost and drive where vw appeals to autobahn drivers which I will never get to drive on.

I've never worked at VW but I do work at Mazda and can tell these cars are built to a price. Everytime our detailer does washes for cars for the showroom or a customer delivery, all the exterior lights like the tailights fog up and get water in them. Our dealer and others in surrounding areas have gotten numerous complaints of faulty lights and cracked lenses due to the water. Mazda has recognized this issue but still isn't updating the design. And if you crank up the bass on the bose system, the doors rattle like they have gravel in them. The VW's fender system is miles better and it helps that the doors are much better built! I'm a very open minded guy. I have bought a ton off different make cars and loved them all. I only buy whats best for my needs and wants. And I was about to buy a Mazda 3 GT but drove a base golf for fun and found it more rewarding and much nicer interior. It's a hands down win for me. I'm taking delivery of it today!!!
@jamesgjt9 жыл бұрын
Brandon Friesen well i have the same mazda 3 above with undercoat, the road noise is barely heard, that is true and it is recommended. for the bose system, i am not hearing any door rattling at all even i put it on the maximum. the interior quality is solid built and really up the market. the leather is soft and have a nice feel about it. I found that is even better than the golf. I choose the mazda over the golf after I test drove them both. I am not sure about the fog problems on the headlight tho. But seriously, if u talk about handling, the focus is still the best fun to drive hatch.
@brandonfriesen53899 жыл бұрын
jamesgjt I will agree that the Focus is the most fun. The Golf may be 3rd out of these three, but it will hold it's value better, it's better on fuel, especially with the TDI, its more practical, it's built better, and with the base car, it has best in class value.
@admrob9 жыл бұрын
Jared Germs VW doesn't use a timing belt anymore either. Also, no transmission "requires no maintenance." That's called planned obsolesce so they can sell you a new one.
I've owned an 03' jetta, and an 01' Protege. My Jetta's transmission cooler decided to give out at 80k miles causing damage to the transmission and it would have cost me too much $ to repair it. I also had to replace the water pump shortly before that and the gas mileage was more like that of a v6. I took over my Wife's Protege and got her a 2010 Camry. That Protege ran untill 175k no major issues and all the electronics worked. I just recently traded the Protege in for a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatch after the protege required struts, cv joints, and tires. It all hit at the same time and if I had the money to fix the car I would have, however I was able to get into a newer, safer mazda 3 with no money down. And the 3 is beautiful, runs great. With all that being said the reliability of Mazda is what made my decision for me and because of my Jetta I didn't even consider VW

I researched both vehicles last year and went to people I know who owned both mazda3's and Golf's for sometime, along with other make ad models of cars. When it came down to reliability the Mazda wins easily, The amount of electrical problems with Golf's was a big problem, The earlier models of Auto's in Golf's had major transmission problems, were the mazda's had none. Mazda still use a 6 speed gearbox not a piece of garbage CVT transmission like a lot of other Japanese manufactures. The Mazda had no complaints by owners over the years they had owned them. I opted for the Mazda3 and have never looked back it is a fantastic vehicle and shows longevity unlike the Golf's that had been towed and repair way to much for my liking. Golf's can't handle Australian conditions. I don't know if the US gets a better quality vehicle but the Aussie one's are no good.

I test drove both and ended up with the Mazda 2.5 petrol. The sporty steering and styling was what won me over but I have to say that after owning this car for a while the tyre noise and stiff suspension on long trips does become tiresome. There was a sturdiness about the Golf that the Mazda can't match also, just closing the doors is a constant reminder. The Golf would have been a no brainer if it wasn't so bland.

A few comments below this one talk about build quality and reliability. I have just traded my 2010 VW GTi for the 2016 SP25GT. Why? Well, the water pump, the power steering pump, the engine pretensioner, the gearbox AND the clutch pack...and the final straw that broke me was the blown turbo. All of this after just 6 years of mostly gentle driving with it being regularly serviced by the dealer. That's nearly 20k of mechanical repairs and maybe 6 weeks or so off the road. True, most of it was repaired under warranty but that isn't the point. I adored my Golf - the swoosh of the drivetrain, the seats, the balance of the chassis - but it just kept on kicking me in the guts. Such a pity. My ownership experience with the VW was simply appalling.

Why is everyone fighting over which one is the best? I like them both, i own the gold my bro owns the mazda 3, they both got strengths and wraknesses and appeal to different groups... my brother and I like to talk about how they are different but find them both to be awesome and still quite similar in many ways. It comes down to this for most car enthusiasts, do you want a car that is more connected to the road but is less refined in comfort (mazda 3) or a car that is more refined in comfort but has less connected feel due to the softer suspension(golf). One thing i can tell you however after driving both (and im not biased about this, just honest) is that the golf, even tho softer, is stil faster and can handle equally well when driven agressivly, however it does not feel as agressive as the mazda in the process. I own the 2012 base 2.5L engine golf (170hp originally and 182 after some modding) my brother owns the 2014 skyactive mazda 3 hatchback 2.0L (150 hp originally). You can ask me any further questions on other differences or similarities cause i only skinmed over performance and feel, all i can say is that they are both great cars for their category.

I personally cannot stand these reviews because they are always comparing over priced press version cars that no one who is actually buying a compact in the USA would actually buy. I was in the market for both these cars and test drove base models of the 3 hatch and the Golf. I also work for a rental car company and frequently drive Focuses, Cruzes, Corollas, and Elantras. Ultimately I went with the Golf over all those cars, especially over the three. Things you have to consider with the base models: 1. Golf ha smore horsepower (almost 20 more) in base trim and a lot more torque than the 3 does with from what I saw was pretty similar fuel economy based on how I drive and where I live (New Jersey). Golf's motor also sounded like a car motor, the Mazda's sounded a bit like a really good lawn mower engine. Light years better than Focus or Corolla, but not as good as Golf. I never drove a 3 with the 2.5L engine. 2. Golf gives you leatherette seats (if you can honestly tell the difference then you must be fed from a silver spoon) while the Mazda gets you cloth, which are infinitely more comfortable and way easier to clean than the base Mazda's cloth seats. 3. Golf has a bigger roof line, more headroom, and a way more comfortable back seat both in terms of leg room and seating position. 4. Golf has a much more compliant suspension while still having a chassis that is just as planted, if not more planted, than the Mazda's. 5. Golf is way better for users or portable GPS units such as myself, with a lot more room on the dash to place a Garmin on top of (I will never use in car navigation). The Mazda beats the Golf out in terms of styling (it really is gorgeous inside and out while the Golf is much more staid, though hardly ugly), automatic transmission (it's one of the few non CVT automatics that seems okay with going slow or leaving from stoplights), and infotainment system (Volkswagen's voice commands system seems to be unable to recognize certain people's names, a problem I intend on rectifying during my next service visit). I still feel the Golf is a way more well rounded car than the 3, though I would not fault anyone for buying the Mazda of the Volkswagen.

Mazda has had this issue forever and have never come to grips with it. The next thing was the lack of power, I had a Honda Civic gen8 and it had more power than the Mazda and it's a 1.8 vs the Mazda 2.0. To say the ride is stiff in the Mazda is an understatement, I'd say ride like a go-cart more like it. Here in Australia we travel very long distances on poor roads and I just don't how anybody would choose a Mazda3, the road noise and the ride would kill me.

#1 reason to buy a VW Golf instead of some other hatchback like the Mazda3 or Hyundai Elantra GT = LOW BELTLINE of the rear doors. That means that if you carry small kids then in the Golf your kids will actually be able to SEE OUT OF THE REAR WINDOWS in a Golf, while in other hatchbacks all they get to see is Sky because the beltline around the rear door windows is so high on those cars.

TekGeekHD, I agree with you. But for a start most people still do not know how to drive a stick shift. Second, over time it becomes tedious as you age, especially in large cities. Last of all, the software in the automatics is so good now, that they usually get better gas mileage than the equivalent stick. I'm about to get a new automatic(Mazda3), but I won't trade my stick shift in for it because it is so much fun. But I can tell it is getting more tiresome for me to drive. The best thing about a stick now is a lot of young people don't drive them, so often they are more difficult to steal.

O have already owned a Mazda Protege ES 2.0, Mazda 3 and a Mazda 6(all early-mid 2000s). But those Mazda's are no match to this year's Mazda 3.

I sat in a Mazda 3 at the dealer. I am 6'2" and couldn't get in the car without breaking my legs. So I found the little guys review skewed. I hate getting in a car where my head can hit the headliner. Sat in the golf and could get in and out easily. I sat in a lot of different cars and I am amazed that they seem to be built for little people. I found it is where they put the dor pillar and how big the opening is. I couldn't even get in the Nissan juke the opening was so small.

Zach Payne i'm 6'3+ and have yet to find a car that i can't fit in comfortably (ok maybe a 90's Accent i test drove). The seats adjust in modern cars. I tend to recline the seat a little if headroom is an issue.

after a test drive with the golf and mazda 3, I realised that where the Mazda 3 still makes so much in 6th gear at about 60mph, I didn't even realise I was going 65mph in 4th gear with the golf and I was only at 2000 rpm. so you may brag about having a 6 speed transmission but it is not as practical and well engineered as the golf 5 speed. but when I step on the gaz pedal of the golf, I still get a really nice noise from the 1.8 l tsi that has proven it's reliability over the years.
@perandersen1178 жыл бұрын
+Charles-David Bérubé Is it in the US the Golf only have a 5 speed? I noticed a lot of stuff in the video, I found confusing. First of all, the Golf VII came out in 2012, so comparing a 4 year old car to a 2 year old, isn't quite what I could call fair. The screen the in the video (On the golf) is the smallest you can get, go for the Discover pro, and you got 8", so that point i really dont get in this comparison. Ohh well back to the transmission. Here in Europe the Golf has a DSG transmission with 7 speeds (if you dont go for the Manual with 6 speeds, which in the norm here in Denmark, just because of the price (its a 4000 Dollar ekstra if you want the DSG).
@perandersen1178 жыл бұрын
Charles-David Bérubé Ahh Sorry mate! Guess the last name should have tipped me of ;) But yeah, we are just waiting for the 2016 facelift of the Golf VII now, and perhaps the Golf 8 in 2018 :) But go look at the Golf GTE, and you should have an idea of how I think the Golf should look like (well with leather seats, and the sunroof as extras). But agian the 8" screen is a extra aswell, so perhaps its not featured on the videos here on youtube. Noticed you said 1.8 TSI aswell? Only engine to go over 1.4 here in Europe are the GTI and the R model..Else its everything from 1.0 to 1.4..So atleast you get bigget engines :P
@charles-davidberube11748 жыл бұрын
Per Andersen we get pretty much the same engine that Audi uses so yeah I guess we have a more powerfull engine.
@perandersen1178 жыл бұрын
well its the same over here, guess the cars just use smaller engines due to emisions

The thing that sucks about the mazda 3 now is you can get a mazda6 touring with leatherette thats larger for almost the same price. The 3 is overpriced now. The 6 is the better bang for the buck.

I like both of these cars a lot. I do find them both to be pretty expensive, though. I think the VW is just classier. Maybe a bit more subtle exterior, but still classier, and a beautiful interior. And at 2 Grand less, the VW is an easy choice for me. "Fender" Audio is so cheesy though. Blaupunkt would be so rad.
@godfatherNYC10 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I had a like a mid 90's Jetta back then. It was great at first but started falling apart. Like the bumpers would fall off those cars. Then it needed a fuel pump, I think, and they told me it was INSIDE of the friggin' gas tank, so they'd have to cut into it or replace it altogether or some shit. What a pain. It did drive nice and had more class than a Japanese equivalent at the time, but yeah, you're right. I hope the newer ones are better, though? Plus, once I bump up to anything near this price bracket again for a new car, I'll be getting a BMW again. I leased an '08 X3 for 3 years and never had one single issue, plus all maintenance was covered for free.

The Fender Audio is miles better than the Bose system in the 3.
@atrip90529 жыл бұрын
Brandon Friesen The audio system will outlast the car but when I look into buying a car, I purchase for the the whole car and just not one component. If i want audio only, I would just buy a set of the most expensive headphone and just take public transportation. IMHO.
@brandonfriesen53899 жыл бұрын
Atrip I didn't bring durability and longevity into this. I'm just saying on a pure sound system comparison, the fender system in the golf is hands down better than mazda. Fender even made demands that they redesign some pillars in the mk7 golf because the acoustics wouldn't be up to their standards.

i have nothing to say. both of the cars are brilliant but sure, every German car will win a Japanese car. also the golf is more comfort and Even cheaper than the mazda 3. in a lower cost you will get every feature you want in your car, it starts with a dual climate control until Automatic break. everyone, need a family car but still comfort and beuty? the golf is your car.

Although I am a life long devoted VW/Audi/Porsche owner/enthusiast, I still believe that the DSG = the *Don't Shift Good* Transmission (which are still having Mechatronic Unit failures) are inferior to their manual transmission counterparts. Besides, you cannot skip gears with any DCT (i.e.DSG) car like you can with a manual tranny. You must engage every gear while up or downshifting. (Say from 5th to 2nd, or 4th to 6th) and that SUCKS! Manual transmissions go into the gear YOU choose instantly! Anyone defending DSG's or the base Automatic Trans found in this tested Golf probably do not know how to drive a manual-transmission car, and thus have no idea what they are missing. And for all the kiddies that prefer STYLE over REFINEMENT, you'll learn. *Long Live VAG Automobiles with MT's!*

When I was building a Golf on their website I didn't see the option for upgraded headlights and tail lights unless you went with the GTI, and yet the one in the video is equipped with it. Can you turn off brake vectoring when you don't need it? I imagine that wears out brake pads a lot more quickly.

I am 6'1 210 lbs, and I had about 2 inches extra head room in back seat, and 4 inches between my knees and the back of the front seat, and that was with the front seat back far enough for a 6' 2" in front very comfortably. Pretty damn impressive! You can easily fit four 6'2" guys in the Golf.

Ummmm. I stand a modest 6'8". Just test drove one of those with a manual. It is one of the most comfortable cars I've been in. I have more space than my current 04 explorer. So if you find that car a little tight, you're too picky. Also, maybe the Golf has some advantages. But it's just too ugly in my opinion. It just looks like a lump of cheap car.

I'd get a lower model/mid level (manual) Mazda 6 with the 2.5L for the same price point as these and solve the lack of interior space in the 3 but still get a fun, 4 door, daily driver that gets decent gas mileage. Rear seats fold down in the 6 for extra utility with decent trunk space.
