Nissan Sentra: the official car of thinking a vehicle is reliable because you hit 30k miles without a catastrophic failure
@carplay5454 Жыл бұрын
Haha too true. My sis paid $5000 for a 2011 sentra with 100,000 miles. In 3 months, the cvt was starting to go. Sometimes the power steering wouldn't work too. It usually required two to three start ups to get the p.s to work again. I'm just happy she traded that thing in for $2000 at Toyota for a Camry.

Because who determines that? The dealership you take it to? will they actually be honest and replace or it let it go because they know you'll be back to have the cvt replaced when it blows?

They never got the issues fixed. It's considered heroic for a CVT to last 100,000km at best. Now it is difficult to know for certain, most nissan owners DO NOT do regular maintenance, but I did see a good number who, in fact, did have the service done in the CVT, and it still had broken chain links and the cones fractured or exploded. I literally don't get it 😂

@@HumbleHonkingEnthusiastthe funny thing is Nissan used to have a reliable foolproof design for the CVT, back in the 90’s and early 2000’s they had a Toroidal CVT. Basically it’s two regular CVTs fused together, so they can handle double the hp and double or even triple the amount of torque compared to a single CVT. Why they stopped making them I don’t know but maybe they should have stuck with that design. Because they could handle high amounts of power and torque, the parts used in them were stronger than the parts they use nowadays and on top of that, they didn’t need maintenance nearly as often as a Nissan CVT does now (which is a transmission fluid and a CVT paper filter change every 20k to 30k miles).

Those engines hardly had catastrophic problems unlike the 2.5 that replaced it (head gasket problems), the build quality was quite decent (not as great as Honda, but not as bad as Hyundai/Kia and Daewoo of the 90's), the transmissions were pretty reliable, and when people say "Big Altima Energy", they usually don't think of those first two generations. The shifter gets stuck in park each time it's put in park, use shift lock release regularly. Door got smashed into overnight, I went to a junk yard and found my exact car and color to switch doors, it's really convenient having a car so common in junk yards. The engine has held up and CVT has surprisingly held up. It has no power, the transmission is choppy on downshifting sometimes. Surprisingly no CVT whine yet. Nissan DID make an excellent economy car. The B13 Sentra was an excellent Sentra with high quality materials, decent space for small cars at the time, and gave us the magical three letters: SE-R. They did have some rust issues though... But they felt and drove far more expensive than what they really were. Starting in 1996, corners started to be really cut, and over the future generations, it's been a death by 1,000 cuts to keep the price down. Now it just feels cheap. I don't think you can even get any Nissan in a manual any longer. The Frontier was the last vehicle i knew of that they still made with a conventional automatic transmission. I have a '13 and it's great. Most of their other vehicles are junk now unfortunately.

I’ve had my 2015 Sentra since 2017, had about 16k miles at the time. I’m currently at 107k miles with the same transmission - only had to change the CVT fluid twice so far. Idk if it’s because I do mostly highway driving or because I’m always in “Eco” mode with less throttle response, but I’ve never had any problems. Definitely one of the cars of all time.

And the only reason I do is ‘cause my dad’s a mechanic w/ a shop and a lift (so no excuse not to) and would beat my ass if I didn’t. They don’t make the transmissions easy to service because the filler neck on the CVT is tucked deep in the engine underneath the ECU and has a sealed cap that you have to BREAK to put any fluid in. They fully expect you to bring it to a dealer service tech I suppose, but I’ve been outta warranty for a while now and I’m still saving for a Hardbody so I gotta keep this thing alive one way or another.

In the 5 years I had it before a drunk driver totaled it, it had 1 oil change(I was a poor college student who didn't know anything about car maintenance). The Versa was pretty reliable as well . For the majority of the 7 years I had it, I did basic maintenance my self. I put about 150k miles on it(235k total) before I sold it and got the iM. The iM has been a big step up in every department. I had been hearing how Nissan had been going down hill for years, so I decided to go with a Toyota. Definitely a good choice!

Every time Big Altima Energy gets mentioned I can't help but laugh. The facebook page is hilarious, but what most of the posters there don't realize is that THEY are the meme, not the content they post. They'll post a nice low mileage Altima without any damage and say something like "Just waiting for a CNA to hit a fire hydrant with it" or ANY car with the slightest damage saying "bIg AlTiMa eNeRgY aM i RiGhT?!" Although more on topic here, Back in 2014 I test drove an Altima and a Sentra. They felt like they were made by two different car companies. The Altima, believe it or not, with those "zero gravity seats" was VERY comfortable, reasonably quiet, felt well put together for a new car. The Sentra... not so much. Noisy, jittery, and materials looked and felt like something from the 90's someone would tell you "but it's recycled material!".

I ended up with a Sentra during the used car shortage in 2021. My trusty 2004 civic blew a head gasket and I had to either drop in a new engine (replacing just the head gasket was more expensive than an engine replacement as quoted) or get a new car. I didn't have cash enough on hand for an engine replacement, but I did have enough for a down payment on the cheapest car available, a 2017 Nissan Sentra. It's slow, it's terrifying to drive, and unfortunately it's mine. I haven't had problems with it but I know, I just know, it's only a matter of time. Currently working my ass off to get it paid off so I can trade it in for something different and better. 2021 was a hard time in my life, I had just broken up with my significant other of 3 years and dealing with that plus the death of my grandfather, it was just an awful year for me. Your commentary is epic on a Biblical level! You have some kind of reverse obsession with this car to the point of being bizarre and it's Chris' car. It looks like someone took some care of it, although it's dirty inside. I dislike Impala's as much as you dislike this one, but I'm not going off on it (I had a '67). I had a 2015 Sentra S and someone hit me. So then, I then got a 2017 Sentra S. It looks much like Chris' inside, dark gray outside (they don't change much). How much was his used? Mine was $18,640 new. It had a radio/CD player, but I upgraded it to a flat screen last year for $500. It goes from 0 - 60 in about 3 months. I never pass with it; but I tried it once. 139 HP is not for that; it is forbidden. I get 37 MPG in city. I love the way it feels and handles I'm an auto detailer, so it is pristine even after 7 years now. Yes about the 5 year loan; I paid mine off in 54 months. It's true the price is low, but I'm not a low-life for buying one. As a detailer, I promise you there are worse cars in its price and class, and yes it has one. I maintain cars worth 6 figures, but they're not worth it; I'm not impressed, but they are nice. It's paid for now and has 65,000 miles on it. It fits me and I love it, and I love not having a monthly payment. That frees me to do other things I could not otherwise do. Many people have a life-long habit of perpetual car payments; I'm not like that. Without drawn-out dramatics, the cons of this vehicle are the lack of power, and the CVT that are is its downfall. I know, I've had 2. Thankfully, I have an honest service department at my dealer I didn't even buy it from and not long before my warranty runs out, I had an oil change and they volunteered to replace the transmission, which they did. I didn't know anything was wrong with it, except a little slipping when putting into gear; not unusual for an older car. They lent me a gods awful Altima for the week it took to do the work. I share your distaste for that car; I'd say it's a step down from the Sentra; it just feels odd and it's too big and cheap looking. The Sentra fits me and I like the way it feels, notwithstanding the lack of power. I'm 152 pounds, so it might seem cramped to you because of your size. My seat is very comfortable to me, but I have a 31" waist. I would not buy one again because of the CVT alone, but I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon, and hopefully never (I'm older than you). It still looks new and I haven't even had to replace the brakes yet. Other than buying a new battery from Nissan about 6 years in, I have had to invest nothing in maintenance other than oil changes. My new transmission won't need service for another 5 years. By taking care of it, I have the freedom to buy a motorcycle now and keep the miles off of it. In only 13 years, I can get an antique license plate for it and slash my insurance. And, it will still look showroom new with crystal clear headlights. It isn't a "disposable" car, I'm proof of that. I've turned down insane high offers for it. It isn't perfect, but it's a decent car. Flowery descriptions of what "crypt keepers" are doing and other non-sense means nothing when talking about cars. I think you have to own one to properly know it. I've owned a Sentra for the last 9 years and I love my car. I hope Chris enjoys his. The styles don't change much, so unless you own one, you can't tell what model year they are, and the profiles are nearly identical. This makes them nearly age-proof, although they do change every 5 years or so just a little. The interiors are dated; I give you that. The interior of my '17 is exactly the same as my former '15. I love my car because I have to. I'm used to it so I'm keeping it. Update 7/2024: I waited 10K miles for the latest oil change; I know, my bad. No problem, but I did have it flushed to punish myself ($120). I boasted about not having to replace brakes, but the time came for the front only ($260). By this time, the front rotors were to thin to resurface, plus I'm keeping the car forever, so I had those replaced ($170). Oil change ($10). With other shit and fees, the bill was $685 for oil flush, change, front rotors and brakes; the only repair bill I have ever paid since I bought the car. Did I pay too much? Yes, and no. Could I get that done for les? Yes. They replaced my transmission for free, so no. How much less? I don't know, but it would take me a while to find a place to get it all done. I was already there, they know my car, I knew that work was coming, and Bligh me, but I trust them more than I would a chain shop, and don't know a local mechanic. I knew the work would be done right, with OEM parts and they are incredibly nice to me. They don't recommend services to me that I don't need and I know they won't break something just to fix it. So, doing the math, the car has now costed me about $125 per year on average in maintenance including oil changes and a battery. It is still in pristine, showroom condition with no mechanical issues and gods blessed me, it's paid for. Not bad; no money pit here.
