Test drove a Nissan Rogue once. The windshield wipers wouldn't turn off because the rain sensor was broken and there was no way to override it. W.T.F? Why would you ever have that not able to be bypassed in case it stopped working and why would you design the circuit to fail in the ON position? That does not show that the electrical engineering was done correctly. Maybe they have corrected those problems now, but those are mistakes you don't make as a if you have half a brain. It did drive well and was comfortable. Nissan did fix the problems with CVT by putting in stronger parts in it. The tech for those is still kind of new, so you aren't going to see the durability that other transmission have. The car isn't designed to last longer than 250k miles, so the transmission only has to last that long.

Not only for safety but just for simple reliability. If the HVAC interfaces through the screen and the screen has a bug or issue, why does it need to take out one of the needed functions of the vehicle? Not to 'back in the day' this issue but as recently as the late 2010s if your 'screen'/double din radio crapped out all you lost was the radio and maybe maps/smartphone integration. Customers are left with a stupid high repair for the screen in order to fix the HVAC instead of just leaving it broken. In my opinion, everything other than Stop/Go/Steering/wipers/mirrors/exterior lights/HVAC/seat position can be in some proprietary big screen as it's just extra 'features' that don't affect the basic function of the vehicle. Everything else like seat heaters, radio, navigation, 'apps', etc. is just filler crap that is a distraction and not necessary for driving.

Exactly. While a bit more fragile than a Hondyota, just a little maintenance (especially with the CVT) will make it last much further than public perception. However, the typical owners of these cars tend to forever be in a life crisis of some sort and choosing between food for the kids or regular oil changes tend to be weighed often.

Took me a LONG time to scroll before I found a positive comment, but I just wanted to say that my father's Rogue, besides being boring, has been a really good, reliable car. He doesn't skip any maintenance, and there were 0 surprises for far despite racking up over 80k miles in less than 2 years. The infotainment sucks, the safety features are more annoying than useful, it's slow, but the suspension feels good over bumps, quiet on the highway, has 7 seats, a pretty decent tan leather interior and it's very easy to drive. I test drove everything in the class and being a big hairless gorilla, I fit best in the rogue. I kept it for four years which is the max I'd recommend owning one. In that time I abused the hell out of it and it took with well enough. Living in utah with all of the mountain ranges I decided to buy a 2018 f150 2.7 EB. In the year I've owned this f150 I haven't been able to keep the CEL off for more than a month. The rogue only had a CEL once and it was for the gas cap. That being said I did have to have the dealer "flush" the trans and it was $600.00 the manufacturer recommends doing that every 30k. Kinda spendy but all and all even taking it down off road mountain terrain it handled well just didn't have the power and unfortunately didn't have the cargo capacity I needed for my lifestyle.

You buy a CRV or RAV4 cause they're good at what they do and you can probably depend on them to do so reliably until they need that once in 10 years/100,000 mile service. You buy a Rogue, Sportage, or Tuscon because you need your money to stretch and you already burned through 3 credit cards trying to keep up with a struggling Escape or Equinox and you were already doing Uber to try and pay them off and feed your kid(s).

Absolutely! It baffles me how people will buy a used Hyundai/Kia because "the price was so good!" and then are stunned to discover there's a multibillion dollar class action suit against them for the GDI engine. Then they need to come in and top off the oil every 3 weeks because it burns the oil so quick. Or people that don't believe me when I tell them 95% of new cars recommend Full Synthetic oil. I have other examples but I'm already yapping a little more than a KZbin comment should warrant.

Worked for the Hertz and people and staff liked the vehicle. More requested than one would think. One of the few vehicles we chased and swapped out to get. The other being Siennas. That is a compliment to Nissan. We had nice ones of these as well and they were more than, Ford, Subaru, Jeep, GM, Volvo and especially VW. Even Hyundai version had lower expectations than the Nissans..

My dad has rented hundreds of cars in the past 30 years and he prefers the Nissans for their infotainment. Our whole family drives Toyotas, but if we need a rental, Nissan makes it painfully easy to connect your phone and navigate the screen. The only issue renting Nissans is that a lot of them have headlights so wimpy that you can see better driving with just the marker lights and ultra bright drl.

10:00 This is why you need to “walnut blast” the intake every so often. Get a package of walnuts, and a Slap-Chop, and chop up those walnuts very fine. Then, as the engine is running, remove your air filter and dump a few cups of walnut dust/chunks in to your intake while opening the throttle up to full. You won’t have a problem of carbon buildup anymore.

Just skip to 14:03 if you’re tired of the r/cars circlejerk. Because flatly, every car in this price range is some kind of CVT, some kind of direct injection sh*tbox. But at least Nissian knows why it is, and caters its financing and pricing to its audience. It’s good enough, and relatively affordable.

I really enjoyed the Duality Of Man between the two ends of the episode, and then sandwiched in the middle was Mr Regular channeling the mechanic from old Motorweek episodes, calmly but emphatically explaining PFI vs DI. Perfect. And I think both takes on the Rogue and its owners are valid. Car owners contain multitudes and the person who buys a Rogue because /they're the reason/ their life is out of control, and the person who is responsible but has just been dealt a bad hand and buys a Rogue to bank on the warranty are both out there. At least neither of them drive like Altima drivers.

I COMPLETELY COMPLETELY agree with the dude at the end so much. Cars are a HUGE tax on the poor. I am "poor" working class, 30 saved up $55k in cash, $20k in retirement. I drive a 02 hyundai elantra that I have been nursing along, and I bought a 91 f150. The Hyundai Elantra has been surprisingly reliable, but it is falling apart. My 91 f150 has been a huge time and money pit for me because I am constantly having to fix parts on it. I am going to be moving states and moving into an apartment soon, and I am generally wondering if I can afford to maintain these vehicles..... I wont be able to take transmissions out in an apartment parking lot.... For the poor you either buy an old vehicle and try and fix it the best you can (which is insanely hard if you live in an apartment), or you try and gamble on used vehicles on craigslist, or you try and buy a cheap new vehicle. I am a dude who can work on my own stuff, but what if you are a woman, or disabled? You aren't going to be pulling transmissions, or engines, or even doing your own brakes, or oil changes. At the end of the day cars are a poor tax period.

Hearing a defense of a Nissan Rogue is like hearing a defense of a wild racoon that broke into my house and somehow ate all of my Phil Collins CDs in eleven minutes. The Nissan Rogue embodies the feeling of being trapped after making a simple, tragic mistake. Everything about a car's comfort, performance, and fuel economy all become moot points when the car is kept together by crossed fingers and willful denial kept up to postpone a breakdown in the owner's mental constitution. There is everything to loathe about a car built so terribly inside and out that it fails to even almost fulfill its duty as an appliance, which role (nearly) all passenger vehicles are ultimately beholden to. If a car such as this punishes you for trying to get six-digit mileage out of it, what use would it be drive it in the first place.

In the UK (and the rest of the world) it's called the X-Trail (with the Rogue Sport being the Qashqai). The X-Trail is a popular model here. It's not as popular as the Qashqai but it still sold a fair amount. They are *fairly* reliable vehicles, aren't an eyesore, good prices, high levels of kit and fuel economical engines. The most popular engine in the X-Trail is the 1.6/1.7 DCi Diesel, they're pretty damn gutless but they get good fuel efficiency. It's a large car which is good for families with 3+ children with plenty of space in the boot. Good for towing (the main reason my Neighbour has one) and fairly cheap to buy/lease. Don't get me wrong, there are much better cars out there. But for the vast majority of people, they are more than enough. The Qashqai and X-Trail were also used as the underpinnings for the Renault Kadjar, the Kadjar's replacement (the Austral) and Koleos. My mum has a Kadjar and she likes it, fuel efficient enough and mostly reliable, only issues we've had are the start/stop system being glitchy where it brings up an error but continues to work and a couple of flat tyres (but those can't be blamed on the car)

I asked why he chose it, and he said he needs 4wd/awd for the snow. I pointed out that he probably doesn't need to buy a car with 3 rows of seats when he's single with no kids, and I listed some other options. He eventually bought a nissan rogue of course, and I wasn't able to say anything nice. He didn't do any research, and now it's gonna suck when someone else is still driving his old crv with no issues and he needs a transmission. On the subject of late 2010 Nissans, my wife got a used 2017 Pathfinder in the beginning of 2022. We traded in a 2015 Santa Fe XL towards it that had just gotten a bunch of work done to its timing system and transfer case; and last I heard it ended up blowing its engine a month or two after we got rid of it. The Pathfinder seemed like a good upgrade, it was top trim so you had plenty of creature comforts, lots of room, managed to tow our small camper fairly well considering its size. But I never trusted the CVT, and it was Direct Injection as well. And since it was technically a work vehicle so it did sit and idle a fair bit. And sure enough, a little over a year after we got it the engine fan started rattling. Then the lifters started ticking and we knew it had turned into a time bomb. Ended up trading it towards a V6 Ram 1500 about a year and half after we got it so we could avoid having to deal with the cost and lengthy repair time of getting the head and timing system serviced. I just hope whoever got it is keeping up with the CVT servicing for their sake...

Is the Rogue the same as the X-Trail in Asia? We had an X-Trail before and it was the nicest and most expensive car we've ever had. Looks exactly the same as this Rogue and it's about the same year. I quite liked it as it was nice and planted and surprisingly quick in our roads. We had it for 3 years and we never had trouble with it aside from the time a stupid motorcyclist didn't stop while dad was crossing when literally the rest of the damn road was stopped and dented the left front panel. Insurance took a bit but it was repaired with no issue. Granted my dad keeps up with maintenance and I assume the average American Nissan buyers aren't exactly like that
