My original post was not intentionally trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment of this motorcycle. If you like the bike great. I would ride it. All I was saying is that I would not pay what they are asking for it, because the price is too high. Quite a few people agreed with me. So let's end this back and forth squabble.

I bought this bike and could not be more satisfied. It's just enough power for me, too much power just means I'll get more speeding tickets. It's a relaxed cruiser bike to enjoy, not the type of bike you get to have an adrenaline rush.

A similar design, but with a 650cc twin cylinder engine (little more power) would be pretty near irresistible. Keep the kick start as backup, but add electric start as well.

Yamaha never sold the SR 400 in the U.S. back in the late 70's Early 80's.It was 500cc's w/ 28 hp. Great motor. My 1978 "XT" 500 [dualsport model] went 83,000+ miles,then the crankcase cracked and then refused to shift gears. It never leaked or burned oil,and id had the "points ignition" [no electronic ignition] , I never replaced the points [adjusted once ] in 83k miles!

I bought one, 2017 and love it. It's my fun bike. Hell, the 400cc engine is just fine. I have bigger bikes for that. I don't even want to mod it, I want it just the way it is. I have to say I think there is now a market for this sort of bike on congested city streets, especially London's congestion zones. Not quite so good in rural Cornwall. Obvious competitor is the Royal Enfield Bullet which has evolved into a competitive offering for the urban crowd, plus there are loads around to go for secondhand.

Consider this, 2014 Piaggio BV 350. It's a scooter, but it has a 330cc single sylinder LIQUID-cooled engine with 4 valves per cyllinder, makes 8 more hp. So it has a smaller engine, that has more technology built into it and has lots of bells and whistles. Even with all its frills and advanced technology, the bv is still just below 6k. I think Yamaha could have done better. They could have had a real winner.
@BadShadd1
@BadShadd1 10 жыл бұрын
krayziesensei Also consider that the Fz-07 is $6900 its an upright naked sport bike. Parallel twin engine liquid cooled with gobs more HP than this bike. I know that may be not the type of person this bike appeals to but Yamaha can't even compete with their own amazing FZ lineup... I got my 2012 FZ1 with 1200 miles for 7100 dollars!

This is a nice bike but I think Yamaha might do well to also come out with a XS650cc type model, too. Gotta love that kick start. IMHO, classic retro motorcycles like these are the kinds of bikes that should fair well in the market. I think there is just something about them - Honda's CB1100 is sweeet, Triumph's Bonneville and Scrambler are awesome, Moto-Guzzi's V7 Stone, you gotta see those in person to appreciate, of course, there is the Harley Sportster, but there are also new water coolers that are hitting the market Ducati's venerable Monster and the new Diavel, sheesh wow - Harley's 500 and 750 Street and Indian's new 100 hp Scout. I've see the Scout and fired it up, it's very impressive for it's $11k price point. All in all, I think these are interesting times in this current chapter of motorcycle history. Fun times, I think.

@insertnamehere001
@insertnamehere001 7 жыл бұрын
Back then it was a standard bike, whereas now it's a niche bike. The market effects price; they have to consider how much people want it. If fewer people want it, they make less, which means parts cost more (in business buying bulk heaps lowers the individual cost), then they have to sell it for higher to make up for the higher cost in production.

I'll tell you why I got one: I had a SR250. I also had a Yamaha Virago 535, a Sanglas T400, a Ducatti monster, Royal Enfield bullet, and a BMW F800S I also had a lot of km into a Kawasaki Z750 All that time I enjoyed those bikes a lot, and each one gave me something. But when I wanted to remember pure driving joy it was the SR250 "Special". That thing was over 100.000km (60.000 miles)when I got it and lasted me 15 years, and it was OLD when I got it. When I left it I always missed it. I don't know what it is: Is not "Retro", speed, toque.... I just loved every second I rode it and every story about biking goes to that specific one.... Then I had a serious accident, with the BMW and after four years of not riding I decided to go for the SR400. I don't give a shit it has 25hp, or kickstarter. Since the first second, after not riding for years (and shit, I don't even remember a thing about the BMW or Ducatti), I knew where to put my hands and what to do with the SR400. It was the 250, but with much more balls! And every time I ride it I end with a smile: I love every second of it, plus I started doing long trips again.... And you know what is the best? It will be like that in 30 years time. Up to when I can't physically ride anymore. I know it is expensive: But I can tell you. If you don't like this bike then sod it and get what you want. If you want if because it is "retro" then sod it too and get a Vespa or this or RE Enfield second hand.... but if you know this is your bike, and it's going to last all your life.... then the price is worth it! My 250 was 30 when I abandoned it, and I always regretted it: this 400 is much better quality and is brand new... I won't do the same mistake twice!

KutWrite Exactly! Yamaha makes a 660cc 4 & 5 valve single cyl engine bought from Minerelli in Italy. Put in that engine, and make the wheel base about 60 inches or so, and you have the perfect bike. It could be dressed out to tour on, made into a cafe racer, perfect around towner, great MPG etc. Put on dual disk breaks in the front, and cast wheels for a tubeless tire. Then I would buy one!
@florianzippel6778

+KutWrite because it's originally for the japanese market and the japanese laws changed, so with the "normal" japanese licence you can only drive a 400ccm bike...
@alaned1109
@alaned1109 9 жыл бұрын
The actual reason behind this being a 400 is because they didn't want to make multiple SR models for different market around the world and the 400cc engine displacement fits in to Japan's demanding licensing and insurance policies.

I like this bike a lot. I am even thinking about purchasing one for myself. I like kick start motorcycles. I also like light weight and easy to maneuver motorcycles. There are only a few reasons that make me not too interested in the really nice Yamaha SR400. First thing is the $,5,990 price. Second is that I still have my 1976 T140V Triumph Bonneville 750. What does that mean for me? Well it's already paid for. Bonneville is kick start only. My Bonneville still runs after 40 years so it is dependable. My Bonneville 750 came from the factory weighing only 397 pounds. That's only 13 pounds heaver than the 384 pound SR400. My Bonneville has disc brakes front and rear. My Bonneville is a parallel twin with 750 (744 cc) not a 400cc single. My Bonneville has absolutely much better handling and stopping. My Bonneville is a little smaller and since I removed the 2 stock mufflers it now weighs around 365 pounds. This makes it lighter than the SR400. Anyway, that's me. If you do not own an older Bonneville then I would recommend this bike. I do like the SR400.

the boulevard s40 is a bigger engine, about the same weight though, quite a bit more power, should be a lot faster. The styling of an s40 appeals to me more than the sr400, but that is in the eye of the beholder I guess. The s40 has a bit wider tires. The brakes are the same, disc front, drum rear. Both have spoke rims. The s40 is $500 cheaper new, and you can find gently used ones quite a bit less than that.

Yes, Ive had the Japanese street tracker version of the tu250, (the Grasstracker Bigboy 250) and replaced it with a new SR400. It is a very big step in engine quality and finish. The gearbox is miles ahead. I paid just under 6k here and added another $1500 in customizing. But, really , to "get it" you would have to live in this part of Japan and understand the bizarre licensing system here. then, the $7500 I paid makes far more sense. Bottom line though, the SR will appeal to the right people and is a high quality bike that will run well and look great for a very very long time.

A DR650 engine you say!? Ah yes! I remember those big bore thumpers.. I had an '83 DR500, then later an '05 DR650.. Massive torque! Great bikes, loved 'em, still do in fact. Yes, imagine a DR650 engine in that little Yamaha.. that would be so much fun! But of course with that much torque it might bend that tiny swing arm on the Yamaha.. Or rip the rear sprocket from it's little bolts. Remember, the DR650 and the DR500, both have cush-hubs in the rear, to prevent the engine power from destroying the sprocket bolts and the rear hub. . remember? Love those old DR's.
@DustySquitoNM
@DustySquitoNM 10 жыл бұрын
Lynn Ledbetter Nah, man. Those Japanese bikes are almost always overbuilt. I bet the SR400 could handle that extra torque and HP without a problem. Now, some cush rubbers would be required at least, agreed. Still looking forward to the project bikes that get built off this thing.

Veggieburger Inflation is a general term used to describe the state of the economy. It has to do with the value of the dollar, the value of goods and services and the value of assets. Inflation touches everything in the economy. what Joseph Peoples was talking about was the single symptom of inflation, the devaluing of the dollar. This comes through our useless government printing more money to try to combat inflation. It's a stupid plan but they won;t stop doing it. By this occurrence the U.S dollar loses it's value in comparison to Gold, precious metals or other worldly currencies. If you're going to try to correct someone on the internet, please get your facts correct. Right now you look like an idiot. The power of economics compels you.

Charon58 ??? I dont think so. I have been living in Japan for 20 years and have seen these bikes since I arrived, and they have hardly changed. The only change, really, was the change to EFI about 5 years ago, and the front disc/back drum arrangement. The engine has hardly been touched since 1978. Now, anything over 400 CC is a big change in licensing fees (an extra $1200 US at driving school....yes you read that right) and taxes and bi-annual safety overall (mandatory). So, a 400 in Japan makes sense. Besides, the average road speed limit is 40km/h. Double that and you lose your license for six months. I ride with a couple of guys on W800s and we all do the same speed, except on the freeway.

The bike is def. overpriced, but you can find one new in dealerships for 5k fairly easily if you just wait around a bit (not sure why, they must be buying them much lower). Not sure I want to even spend 5k though. Not when I can get the duke 390 for that much which has almost 2x the power and fills a similar role. I like this bike a lot but the duke 390 wins in every single category (except arguably aesthetics) and they are infact direct competitors.

It depends: How long will you have it? You can have a 30 year old SR (if it is like the old ones) working like new, but I don't think you can have a 10 year old Duke without some problems. If you plan to change it anyway, then yeah, it is expensive.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 8 жыл бұрын
I def. agree there. The duke will hold its value better but yeah, 10 years down the lien it'll likely have had an issue or 2 while the SR will likely be running like a top. Yeah, still torn, I think either way if I buy one I'm going to continuously asking in the back of my mind: "Maybe I should have bought the other one!?" Haha. Don't think you can go wrong either way, though, realistically.

MrSlowestD16 Yeah, I think that probably both would be fine, so just enjoy what you choose! Easy for me, as my most loved motorbike was the SR250 :P. Oh yea, the parts for the Yamaha will def. be cheaper! Given that this is a budget bike though (unlike the 690 or 1290) I'd have to imagine parts aren't terrible....but they'll never be close to what they are for the SR. Decisions decisions.... Guess it doesn't matter much until I get rid of my Sportster to get some extra $$$

400cc and max speed under 100 ?
@lynnledbetter4359
@lynnledbetter4359 10 жыл бұрын
True, under 100 certainly. Max speed for a Japanese single cylinder, air-cooled 400cc engine is about 70 mph (true speed, not as indicated on the faulty speedo) at best. Now, the faulty speedometer on most Japanese motorcycles will indicate about 10% higher than what you are actually moving, so be aware of that before believing that a 400 like this will do 90 mph, because it won't.

I'd say you never tore up a knee on a BSA 441 Victor or an old Sportster trying to kick those bastards over. Having to stomp a motorcycle into life won't appeal to many of todays youngsters. While they may have well developed thumbs from video gaming, unless it's electric the thumb won't work on a kick starter. The original bike had pedals, then they added a motor and kept the pedals. Then they got rid of the pedals, and they started them by grabbing the back wheel and spinning it in the direction the bike travels. Adding a 5 pound starter and a button would make the bike more appealing to more potential buyers. If you really insisted on being old school you could remove the starter, sell it on ebay, and use the money for another tattoo.

$6000 for no electric start and a drum brake in the rear - absolutely ridiculous. If is was $4000, maybe, but the price tag and the kick/drum will or SHOULD scare off many first time riders. First off the bike was a SR 500 not 400 and the four stroke 500 single came out in 1978. In the 60's Yamaha did not make a four stroke. If you are going to review a bike do some homework and get it straight. And yes, I like it but it IS overpriced.
@hzuiel
@hzuiel 9 жыл бұрын
Massively overpriced. I don't understand it at all, retro can be cool at times, but it's not a classic, it's a modern motorcycle, using antique technology. I like new products that pay homage to classic things of the past, or products that are meant to closely resemble those things, but incorporate the progress that has been made in the interim. This literally throws progress out the window. One review i read said that the original actually had alloy wheels and a rear disc, so it's more retro than the original. It has fucking inner tubes. INNER TUBES. Hipsters might find a kick start endearing in some way, but we've done away with them for a reason. The only thing it has that is modern in any sense is the fuel injection, big whoopti, and it's $6000 dollars. When you look at what else is in this price range, it's really hard to justify. Harley davidson has the new street 500 out for only $800 more, or the street 750 for $1500 more. If you want outdated, you could pay $1600 less for the vstar 250, have almost as much power, and in my opinion a better looking bike. Yamaha's new r3 is $1000 less and is by all reviews i've seen, marvelous. The vstar 650 and fz-07 are both a little less than $1000 more than this thing. Honda has the cb300f for $2000 less, cb500f for $300 less, and slightly more expensive R variants. KTM has the duke 390, and 390 rc, for $1000, and $500 less, respectively. Suzuki has several 250cc bikes in the lower $4000 range, and the s40 650cc for $5500. Kawasaki has the ninja 300 with abs for $700 less. It would be a rip off at $5000, considering what else is on the market, but $6000! What the hell. Other bikes are either similarly retro and outdated tech, but cheaper, or mind blowingly better, for less or a little more money. I can only imagine this kind of product is meant to appeal to the same kind of hipsters that pay 2x more for an apple product than what it's actually worth, just because they think it makes them look cool. To add insult to injury it's not even as fast as the old sr500 that americans were fond of. I imagine seeing these parked in front of star bucks, by hipsters that think they're cool and different because they overpaid for new copy of a 37 year old design.

hzuiel Know what the best selling cars in Japan are? 660CC models called "Kei Cars". They have a lot of features, sometimes wonderful interiors, nice eggress/ingress design and overall great finish. they are 660 CC and would be hard pressed to do over 70 mph on the freeway. The basic cost is $13-14K (US). but most sell around $18-22K. Its a Japanese thing. They try to fit everyone's needs but without sacrificing finish and quality. thats why the SR400 has been selling steadily since 1978. they didnt just make it this year and send it to the US. They have been making it, virtually "as is" since '78 and sent it over last year. Its kind of a badge-identity- thing I guess. But like the kei I mentioned above, yes, an old design, but tonnes of quality in it. The instrumentation alone is better gear than what I have seen on $15K bikes. Its not a rip-off. They last forever and dont break down.

Sure, some Japanese bikes had shitty suspension and tires. So you mean it's traditional and I should like it AGAIN ? Nuts.. try a Suzuki TU-250X which handles better and is just as " retro", Because they gave us the W-650 with crummy shocks, brakes, and bias tires ( which I have on my K-75) we 'sposed to love it AGAIN. common. Best part of the standard bike is a flat seat, pegs down, upright riding position ( visibility and variable seating postions), safe seating position for passenger. We still want best suspension, tires, and brakes possible at the price point, which doesn't compromise the real retro aspects..just makes the bike safer, better. s-90, marusho ST-500, R-60US, R-75/5, R-60/5, K-100RS, K-75,Kaswsaki K-200 (3) cushmans, yamahas, Hondas, out the wazookie since 1959.. bushwa
