I purchased a 2018 Civic two years ago and the AC has stopped working 2-3 days ago. I hope it's not the condenser, but every 10th gen Civic owner should be aware of this problem. There is a TSB out about this for a lot of 10th gen civics. However, you might not be covered if your VIN # doesn't fall under Honda's system.
I love Honda, but I am disappointed in their quality this time around.

It's funny I was having this same exact issue with my 2016 Civic. I was going back and forth with Honda to have them pay for the repairs, but they wanted me to pay for half. I decided to go get an attorney instead and file for lemon law. It's amazing how fast they started to review my case for a buy back once an attorney got involve.

I just traded mine in and got a Toyota Corolla. Luckily used car market is insane rn and I bought the civic for under market value. So I was able to get a pretty penny for it. Now I have a Corolla with freezing cold AC. I still would buy another ho da tho (dream car is a Civic type R) but Honda better get their shit together

I bought my 2016 Honda Civic Coupe Touring second hand from a used car dealership. Bought it at the end of September around fall when the weather was pretty chilly getting ready for winter, so I didn't think of checking the A/C. But as soon as May came around bringing its first hot week of the year I realized the A/C was blowing hot hair, with tinted windows and leather interior my car felt like a death box. The used lot dealer blew me off so I went online realizing that this was a normal problem for all 10th gen civic owners but this video brought up the 10 year warranty and got my attention. I'm from Canada and I'm pretty sure this video was uploaded in the states, but I still took a chance and called my local Honda dealer told them the problem and gave them my VIN number and just like that they said my car was covered by the 10 year warranty BUT. The Civic's A/C stops working for two reasons (they explained to me) and they were the condenser or the compressor or even both. Now the 10 year warranty only covers the condenser and not the compressor, they also told me that in order to find out which one they needed to work on I would have to take my car in for a diagnostic test which would cost me $150. But if the test came back stating that it was only the condenser I would get my $150 back and the condenser service for free, if it was only the compressor I would lose the $150 and would have to decide if I wanted to go through with them servicing my compressor for parts and labor costing me a total of $1400. If the test came back that both the compressor and condenser were faulty, I still would of lost my $150 and they would service the condenser for free but only if I paid the $1400 to have my compressor serviced as well. Man, lets just say this decision felt like I was gambling at a casino. But I said to myself "the heck with it!", handed them $150 and went all in! Luckily for me it was only the condenser and the compressor was just fine, I got my $150 back my car serviced for free and I'm now driving in the hot summer inside a civic that's cold like an ice cube.

My 2017 Civic LE also failed on May 15, 2022. No chill air. I took it to the dealer and same song and dance as Bobby Digital above. Cost me $700 ( in NJ). This was my 6th Honda and I swore it is the worst Honda I've owned. Sadly, Toyota, Hyundai and Honda have zero new car inventory. So I made a deposit on a 2022 Toyota Corolla and now must wait 3 to 6 months for delivery. I fully expect to the dealer will renege on the trade in value of the 2017 Civic and probably on the price of the new Corolla in spite of the invoice they gave me with my $1000 deposit.

Update 10/30/2020: I will upload a video update on my Civic soon, but long story short, the freon leaked out again completely. My AC system is shot and dealer quoted me $2500 to fix and a private shop around $1000-$1200. The problem with this generation is the design and location of the condenser itself. No matter how many times you fix it, if it's a poor design, it could fail again. I sold my Civic after owning it for only 2 years while mileage was still low. I picked up a 2016 Toyota Prius C as my daily driver. Check my other videos for the review on it. I can definitely say that Honda quality has gone down over the years. Hopefully this helps people out there watching this video!

@WKaznartist 3 жыл бұрын
A local Honda dealer did a free A/C check up and said it was a leak. So in order to diagnose it further to pinpoint the leak, they charged $152 ($129 labor, $20 Freon) to do an Evac and Dye. 4 hour appointment and no leak in the engine area. They are guessing the leak is in the dash/touch screen. It’ll be $129 labor per hour for a 9 hour job!!! It’ll probably cost $1,300. I’m thinking of getting a lawyer or joining the class action lawsuit.

Just by this video and others having close to 100k views more or less says there should be a nationwide recall on all the major A/C components….compressors, condensers, ect. I’ll pay for the hoses myself (because of normal wear and tear). But getting a $3000 estimate from a Honda dealership is crazy to me for a problem it seems everyone is having, no matter the climate; from Canada to Texas to Cali to New York. Might be my last Honda. I just had my Civic AC condenser replaced at the dealership. At 16,000 miles my air conditioner was no longer blowing cool air. They replaced the condenser although I do not believe it is working as well as it did before it broke. I’ve learned that Honda has offered a 10 year warranty from date of purchase on the AC condensers. This 10 year warranty at no charge it’s due to defective condensers in the 2016 2017 2018 civics. Apparently the wall tubes Are defective. The tubes get little tiny holes which the coolant leaks from. My car was still under the original 3yr warranty however, it’s good to know for those who have had their warranties expire. You get 10 years from original date of purchase. I personally am disappointed in Honda for not doing a recall.

Now, the condenser is leaking as in your video and the car is out of warranty. Paid to have the condenser replaced which was a bit pricey. After researching it turns out this may qualify under the lemon law. Going to check that out. Good luck with your vehicle, and besides this issue, the car has been running well. This happened to my Fiances 10th gen sedan. The A/C worked for maybe a week then started blowing warm air. She took it to the dealer. No leaks but her A/C system was completely empty. They came to the conclusion that it was never filled FROM FACTORY! so they "recharged" the system for free and her A/C blows ice cold almost instantly. My FK7 on the other hand blows weak and talked about 20 to 30min to start blowing really cold..... Doesn't matter if Econ mode is on or off. there seems to be a trend of this on the forums for FK7/FK8's. I literally just got a letter in the mail from Honda Corp stating my car now has a 10 year warranty on the A/C condenser. But the catch is, if they see any damage on the condenser, they will not cover it. I've had A/C issues since I purchased the car brand new. And yes, of course, the condenser on my car has a few spots with bent fins, every car does......

A year went on and I am having the same problem all over again. Really disappointed. The repair cost begin at 1800 plus taxes and could easily go even higher. The new dealer now says it's evaporator leak, and I am not sure if spending this sum is reasonable on a 2017 model that has 120k KM and 5 years on the roads.

always make sure you keep the temp around 10 degrees than what it is outside. also make sure you turn off your AC and let the car run atleast 2 minutes before you shut it off so the lines and the compressor can decompress. if you shut the engine off while the AC is running the lines and the compressor stay compressed until you turn it back on.

My 2018 Honda Civic EX-T just recently started having this issue: driver side blows warm air, passenger slightly cooler but not cold as it should. I'm dreading having to deal with the dealer about it. And if it's a faulty condenser, assuming I'm covered by the 10 yr warranty, being told it's on "back order" doesn't inspire much confidence. I had a Toyota Sienna with a recall for the dashboard (it was cracking) and Toyota was also "back ordered." Toyota never had the part and after inquiring about it every few months to years, they never received the part (I eventually sold the Sienna). I'm afraid the same scenario will play out with Honda, waiting years for some "back order" part(s). They drag their feet when it comes to fixing a problem they created.

@Echizen32kMedia

Hi there congrats on your purchase! Actually, you might one of two issues: a bad condense or low refrigerant from the factory. In my case, I believe it was low refrigerant from the factory because my VIN # was already in the system and it has the updated condenser. I refilled the system with new R1234yf refrigerant and it's been about 2.5 months and the AC is still blowing ice cold and I use it almost everyday. You can start with topping it off and get the right R1234yf adapter for the AC line and see if that fixes the issues. If not, then you have a faulty AC component somewhere. GOODLUCK!

I have a 2017 Civic Sedan Touring. It's a great car EXCEPT for the A/C. At 54K miles the both the condenser (factory covered by the TSB) and the compressor ($1500 "goodwill" price from the dealer) were replaced. After that the A/C was better than new. Now, less than 2 years later, at 85K miles, it's clearly failing again. There is a new letter going out from Honda corporate to cover more parts to 10y/100K miles, but I haven't taken the car in yet as it's just become obvious that it's failing again. I'd like to get reimbursed for the first repair before taking it back again. I can answer the question, "would you buy this car again knowing what you know?" No, never. In fact this is my first and last Honda. My Audi and my SAABs were way more reliable. My wife has a 2011 Ford Escape that's 12 years old and it's a rolling refrigerator. Honda's reliability is from a by-gone era.

I am an Auto Tech student with EPA certification on A/C systems and have owned 1987 Integra, 1997 Accord and 2017 Civic so I have some experience with Honda. My 1997 I bought new and the heater inside the cabin leaked (pinhole) glycol into the car. I could smell and taste it when running the defroster. Went back and forth with dealer under warranty and finally they removed the dash and found a hole in the weld on the heater core. Treated me like it was just my imagination but I stuck to my guns and they were sheepish when they located the bad part. Replaced for free - but I learned Honda is only as good as their suppliers and the heater core welding was poor. It was cracked along the weld. Fast forward to 2017 Civic, the A/C stopped working this week and from what I read it is likely a full loss of refrigerant to a leak. The fuse for A/C is good and the compressor clicks on and off when I pop fuse in and out, but hot air into cabin on both sides. I suspect the condenser has pinholes and will have to go through the process with Honda again, but they do now have an extended warranty for the condenser as the supplier provided consensers of low quality (20 years later and still Honda not double checking supplier quality). This is still conjecture on my part so I will see how it goes. A/C systems do not leak out in only a few years, so likely the condenser is the weak link. I am not going to recharge until the condenser is taken out and pressure tested. And no, I dont think a rock strike damaged it. I think once it is out Honda will find a cracked bad weld just like before....

Recharging the system is only a band aid. The refrigerant will leak out again as it is under pressure. The only permanent fix is to find where the leak is and fix it. There are 4 major parts: compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator. The condenser and evaporator are welded pieces and aluminum welds cracking is the most likely spot for a leak. But seals in compressor can fail too. There are also connections that can leak. A mechanic can put florescent dye in the system and then detect where a leak is with a "black light".

2018 Civic SI would use same refrigerent, right? And you mentioned not driving for a while makes it go down? I didn’t drive for like a month after losing job to quarantine, then when I used car again I noticed AC wasn’t working.. 🤨

Yes, most newer cars use 1234YF refrigerant now. Oh man sorry to hear about your job. Yes, you're supposed to use your AC every now and then to keep the system from running out. I try to turn AC on for a few minutes every week even if it's not hot. Seems like so many people are having AC issues, it is such a disappointment. I hope your issue isn't serious and just a simple recharge will do, but in some people's cases (in comment section) they had to replace the entire system. Keep us posted with your progress!

I’ve had this happen around 3 years on both my 2016 Civic EXT Sedan and my 2020 Civic EXL Hatch. On my 2020, it was diagnosed as a leak in the evaporator core. No AC component should fail after 3 years. I told them the car is useless to me, I’m not paying the diagnostic fee and left the car there to get appraised for a trade in.

My 18 touring sport ac stop working with my wife and 2 young boys while is 90 degrees out few days ago here in NJ. I was very upset about this with Honda quality parts and now my vin# is not even included for the extended warranty and off the bat stealership wanted $250 for refill and diagnostics. Pickup a set of hose/gauge and a can of 1234yf for $65 and filled up to green since the gauge confirmed freon is at low/empty. I have about 43k on my car and really started to think about trading in the car.

Sorry to hear about your AC issue. The exact same thought occurred in my mind and I actually went on KBB and submitted a request to see how much my car was worth if I traded it in or sold it. I have read that in certain models of 10th gen CIVICs, the refrigerant wasn't 100% filled from the factory. It's been about 2.5 months since I refilled and I've been using the AC almost everyday and haven't had any issues. Keep us posted about your AC situation. Would love to know and thanks for watching!

I had a 2017 Civic Hatchback with the same issue. The AC was repaired 3 times but the condenser died a month after my warranty expired. It cost me $1300 to fix. I was furious and the dealer support was non-existent. A week later I traded it in for a 2020 Mazda 3. Stick with Toyota, Mazda, Kia and Hyundai if you're looking for something bulletproof.

I'm disappointed with honda. My 2nd honda crv. Only 50000 miles and I'm being told I need $2000 in repairs. Vehicle drives fine. I'm going to trade it in for a Mazda or a Subaru. I'm done with Honda

More than a condenser problem. They are using new generation refrigerant that runs under very high pressure. System components aren't built to withstand pressure. Every component of ac is subject to leaking. Not just the compressor.

2016 civic EX, bought brand new… @ 36k miles the compressor blew, Honda covered and prorated (I paid $250) now at 86k miles and the second compressor blew. Engine misfires with no warning lights. Brakes were shot at 40k …. Love the car, hate the weakness of its structure and mechanics. I’ve had 4 Hondas since 1986 Honda CRX Si and this has been the worst. Might be trying a Kia next… thanks Honda

Had this happened to any 2019 Honda Civics (LX, Sport, etc)? I'm thinking of buying that car but maybe I'll just get a 2019 Corolla instead if this is what happens to the civic

I can’t believe how common this issue is dealer wanted to charge me $2700 then I got a good will discount brought it down to $1700 , thankfully I have a good mechanic that hooked me up $679 for both parts … I’m worried tho in a way!!! Wat If it’s something else so far so good but I just feel like the air flow is a little weak … idk anymore smh . I got my civic in 2018 first time replacing those parts but the issue was there when I first got it smh 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just got a letter about my new-to-me 2018 civic saying Honda is upping ac warranty to 10 years. Probably gonna get it checked given it's been not so cold even setting it on low and driving for 30mins :/ will probably self troubleshoot myself first
