In this video, we will show you an in-depth step-by-step tutorial and comprehensive guide on how to recharge / add / refill refrigerant on a 10th Generation Honda Civic (2016-2021). The process is relatively easy and not too difficult, however, the tenth Gen Civic requires the newer R-1234YF type to do a re-charge,. It will also require a different valve fittings. Here are the #ᴬᴰlinks to the refrigerant, hose with gauge, parts, materials, accessories and tools needed for this repair:
1. amzn.to/3DyOQvh | ZeroR® Top Off Kit #1 - Genuine 8oz HFO-R1234YF Refrigerant (1 Can) & HD Brass Can Tap with Gauge
2. amzn.to/3qe5r4z | Arctic Air for R1234yf, 4 cans and Gauge, R-1234yf, R1234 Refrigerant Support
3. amzn.to/3Om4pf4 | R1234YF Refrigerant Charge Hose Kit, R-1234YF AC refrigerant Can Hose with Gauge, 1/2 LH Can Opener Tap And R1234YF Low Side Adapter
4. amzn.to/3OcX0yr | Lichamp AC R1234YF R134A Gauge Set, Automotive Manifold Gauge Compatible with R1234YF R134A and R404A Refrigerants, Works on Car Freon Charging and Evacuatio

R-1234yf is an environmentally friendly refrigerant that is vastly different when it comes to its chemical makeup, compared to R-134a. R-1234yf has a 99.7 percent lower global warming potential (GWP), the standard of measurement used to describe greenhouse gases' effect on the environment.
The R1234yf refrigerant has been developed as the next-generation solution and is an available replacement for the widely used R134a gas. R1234yf has a GWP of 4 compared to that of R134a which is over 1400 and so combines a vastly greater environmentally friendly benefits with an effective and efficient cooling solution.
Another advantage of the R1234yf system is that this refrigerant uses a similar system of materials - pipes, hoses, sealing rings - as the R134a system. This means the gases are relatively interchangeable with minimal systematic and logistical amendments. Another advantage of the R1234yf system is that this refrigerant uses a similar system of materials - pipes, hoses, sealing rings - as the R134a system. This new generation coolant requires a unique cap and seal configuration to match the new valves and fittings.
Please note that there is a TSB Service Bulletin 19-091 in which American Honda is extending the warranty on the A/C condenser to 10 years from the original date of purchase with unlimited miles. This warranty only covers vehicles that have a defective A/C condenser from the factory. The A/C condenser was not manufactured to specification. As a result, tiny holes may develop in the condenser tube walls that allows the refrigerant
to leak out.
If the dealer repair technician found it was the condenser, the AC will be fixed for free, otherwise you will be charged with diagnostic fees.
If you read Honda forum, you'll see a lot of Civic owners having the same AC issues despite the car being new or low mileage. In some cases, it wasn't cooling at all. In our case, the AC was cool but not cold.
10th generations Civic which covers model years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 two and four doors coupe and hatchback (DX, EX regardless of whether 1.5L Turbo or 2.0L engine. Thank you so much for making this video! I'm about to recharge my 2018 Civic and I always forget how to do it year-to-year. There are a few other videos that each helped in a part of the process, but you covered EVERYTHING and showed us how to do each step while explaining what we were seeing. Shout out to Dad the cameraman for his work too. I'm def saving this for future use as well bc we know I'll need to refill it again at some point.

This was great, I just recharged my wife’s 2017 Honda Civic and the AC is running like a champ! Thankfully, the prices seem to have come down from what he said in the video, as I was able to get both the canister and the hose for under $40 in Texas. Super easy process, and this video covered everything anyone needs to know

Thanks! I talked to the dealership and I never even knew that the A/C requires recharging every 3-5 years... they stated they would do it but minimum would cost 300 bucks to do... and thats if the parts were not broken or something. Watching this... hoping that it will only cost me the 60ish bucks you mentioned. If so you were a life saver. Thanks!

AC is a sealed system and during operation, refrigerant does not get consumed. If it's low in charge, there is a leak somewhere. At a dealership where Technicians are flat rate, they are not going to spend time to look for leaks. They will just charge it and collect their pay for that job and quickly grab the next set of keys. Do you recharge your refrigerator or window AC unit every 3-5 years? BTW, technician of decades and do a lot of AC work. It's always a leak, and I find them and fix them.

Can I ask... before you took your car in for the change did your sticker under the hood reflect the new coolant or the old one? I'm asking because I have a 2016 Civic and my sticker has the new coolant on it (R-1234yf) but I never took it in for the compressor seal change and I wanna know if I should take it or not to worry about it

@@ChilloHaus I have a 2019 civic and it has the new coolant. A couple days after getting the condenser replaced for free it stopped blowing cold again. I took it back and it needed a new Evaporator, so it was a $2,000 job. Luckily my warranty covered most of it. I think Honda should have recalled for all AC components because that coolant eats through the whole system, not just the covered condenser. When you bring it in make sure to mention that you are bringing it in for Honda Service Bulletin 19-091. Your model should be covered for the condenser at least

As a former instructor, GREAT INFORMATIVE VIDEO! One question, I was alway told to hold the can of coolant upright so the vapors would travel into the system as a vapor, not a liquid. Am I wrong about this? Is it ok to hold the can upside down as demonstarted in the video and let the coolant in liquid form enter the system as a fluid? Please advise, thanks!

Well, there are 2 different school of thought on this one: 1) The "NO" crowds - It's important to note that you should not use R134A in a system that is designed for 1234YF. The two refrigerants have different properties and using the wrong one can cause damage to the system and potentially be dangerous. 2) The "YES" crowds - Can I convert R-1234yf to R134a? You can convert an empty R-1234yf system to R-134a. Mercedes made this obvious when it raised objections to R-1234yf over 11⁄2 years ago and recalled European models with the refrigerant, recovered it from the vehicles' systems and recharged them with R-134a. However, you should NOT convert R-134a system to R-1234yf. R134a systems were not designed to operate using a flammable refrigerant. R134a systems should not be converted to use R1234yf as these systems are unable to be converted to a level that satisfies the requirements of international standards (SAE J639 and SAE J2842) set for systems that use R1234yf.

We're ok so far, been about a month a half (since July 24th) and the AC is back to normal. We'll let you know how long it last. Eventually we're going to have to bring it back to the dealer to replace the faulty condenser but we have until 2026 or 2027. It's a 2017 Honda Civic so the extended warranty on the condenser should last 10 years from date of original purchase.

Another question, If the ac is recharged and the fan speed decreases. What would be the cause?
@EyeOnAiman
@EyeOnAiman 9 ай бұрын
Not sure if the increase refrigerant pressure affected the fan speed. The most likely cause is simply that the fan speed setting is on an automatic setting and the system is responding to changes in temperature. However, if you have the fan set to a specific speed and it is still fluctuating, there could be an issue with the fan itself or with the AC system as a whole. Clogged air filter or cabin filter could also be a culprit, perhaps motor starting to fail, but if it happened right after the AC recharged and you're referring the AC fan mounted on the radiator/condenser unit and not the blower fan inside the cabin, then it could be the alternator issue, as more current is being drawn to the compressor. It could also be tension of the belt causing the alternator not to be optimal thus providing less amperage overall. Extremely difficult to speculate without testing the current draw before and after.

I have a 2018 CRV last year the SC did not blow the cold air any more. I searched the internet and found this video. It seems that this is a common problem for Honda ACs I called the local Honda dealer. They said they would change the cost to check whether it is the AC problem. If it is not, I have to pay the diagnosis cost. Since the AC has a 10 year warranty, I will recharge the R-1234fy first. If it is still lack of cold air, I will bring it up tp the dealership to check.

But it doesn't mean you should even if you could. What would be the reason for it? Costs? However, you should NOT convert R-134a system to R-1234yf. R134a systems were not designed to operate using a flammable refrigerant. R134a systems should not be converted to use R1234yf as these systems are unable to be converted to a level that satisfies the requirements of international standards (SAE J639 and SAE J2842) set for systems that use R1234yf.

Your video is a bit disorganized and fails to mention that you must not overcharge your system, so you need tell the audience exactly where on the cheap gauge the needle should stabilize and indicate when to stop adding refrigerant. Also, one commenter mentioned that they took their Honda to the dealer and they fixed it for "FREE." This is very misleading information or should I say "dis-information" these days. The very large Honda dealer in my area (N. VA) told me that indeed there is a service bulletin on the A/C system which they say is due to a leak around the compressor shaft (not the condenser as suggested by the KZbinr), however, they won't touch the A/C system on my 2019 CR-V unless I pay about $500 up front for a "assessment" fee. What do I get for this you ask? This is their charge to empty/recapture my R1234yf refrigerant (if there is any in their to begin with) and for them to add "dye" and then recharge the now empty system and look for the source of the leak with a UV light. IF they decide that the leak is due to the service recall part, then they will credit me back the $500 fee for the discharge/recharge/dye and replace the bad part. IF, they decide that the leak is something else (how heck would I know???), then they will advise me what needs to be done and how much it will cost AND I am on the hook for the initial "evaluation" fee; no way around it! Sounds like a gigantic lose/lose rip-off, because I have no idea what they are going to find and what they decide needs replacing. Also, I know enough about A/C systems (having installed and serviced over dozen different auto makes in the past) I know that dye can be added to any A/C system without removing all the refrigerant anyway. If you follow this train of logic carefully, you will understand why I am NOT taking my Honda to the "stealership" for this problem.

I just came back from the dealership due this issue , they didn’t want to refill the ac due problem with the vaporizer or whatever is called . They said they have to fix that first before they proceed with the ac Refill that is covered by the warranty but they wanted to charge me 2 grand to fix the vaporizer . Idk what to do about it . I might just buy this ac can and refill it by myself for now .

My AC was blowing hot air. I took it to the dealer and they charged $430 to put a dye and refridgerant in and ask me to drive it for a week or so. After driving the car 500 miles i returned to the dealer so they could check for a leak. They said my compresor seals and the suction hose were leaking. They will fix the compressor seal for free but want me to pay $1088 for a new suction hose. Am i being ripped off ?

@@c.richardsmith3437 😢. This is outrageous! Both of my sons' 2018 hondas have a non functioning A/C. There's no way we should pay over $100 to have these cars diagnosed, and with less than 60k miles each, any A/C leaks SHOULD be covered by that extended warranty, regardless of where the leak is. I see a class action suit coming soon !
