I have a '63 Musicmaster (22.5", 1.5" nut width) sanded and finished with a spray can clear acrylic, and the body and neck ended up the same color by happy accident. The contrast of the black and the neck of the '90s reissue really shows how small this guitar is, whereas on my Musicmaster, it's just not as striking. Great post.

Bought a 2018 Duo-Sonic HS in the Lake Placid (pretty sure it's not daphne) blue with the intention of customizing it and making it my ultimate dream guitar. Bought a 1967 Musicmaster Neck, brazilian rosewood and bird's eye maple, and swapped it in. Musicmaster is the better name to me, so I found one from the year I love; 1967, and it was in "played professionally for many years" condition. Still has the logos on the headstock too. Then, I put a Shawbucker in the bridge and a 1967 Duo Sonic pickup in the neck. I put stringsaver saddles on it. And finally, I bought an original 1967 hard shell case that would've come with Duo-Sonics of that year. I've even got a 1967 serial number neck plate. So, it's a mixture of the best from the past and the best of today. Also, you should never lay eyes on it because you'll always hate that you can never find anything as pretty as it in the future. The looks were a total accident too. I guess that makes it even better

I have the Duo Sonic HS surf green - I use it way more than my Les Paul now, and it's my first fender. Light as a feather, short scale, humbucker split, so comfortable. Mine has the rosewood fretboard, before they switched to pau ferro. Absolutely amazing guitar, seems to play well with 10s or 11s on it. I feel like getting a Mustang to go with it now. 😀

my comment is you don't suck. i think there's way too much complaining from people today, but if all your doing is playing how is beginner guitar player supposed to learn if you don't explain. plus even if you have experience playing guitar, you can always get something out of it. i started out playing guitar when i was 10 yrs old, was i good at it no but i learned how to read music which was frustrating at times but i had a very good patient music teacher. over time practicing every day for 3 hours at time, by the time i was 15 i could play just about any song you could think of. so now at the age of 25 i have 15 years of experience, but even then you are constantly growing as a musician. music is eternal and in my opinion you never stop learning. besides you do play the guitar enough to let people hear what it sounds like, and that's all that matters. i like the channel, so keep up the good work.

The reason for 22.75 instead of 22.5 like the vintage model is. 22.5 was interchangeable with 24 mustang/jaguar necks. They use 22.75 because that’s interchangeable with 25.5 strat/jazzmaster necks.

The 90s duo-sonic is a weird-ass guitar. I think the neck is the same scale as the Mini-Strat, and because it's such a weird size and scale, the bridge ends up being like an inch further back than it should be. And I think the huge space between the saddles and the bridge pickup is part of where this big warm tone comes from. The other being the ridiculous scale length and how that influences the movement of the strings. I string mine super heavy, and the result is that it sounds huge.
@notjason
@notjason 6 жыл бұрын
See also the Squier classic-vibe reissues from a few years back. Those also had a weird non-native neck that resulted in an displaced bridge. I've got one of those as well, and the body was clearly the same template as the Mexican 90s model.

Not the biggest fan of the single coil, but want to see if I can change that for a humbucker. Having a stripe on the back of the neck does not depend on truss rod adjustment place (head or heel). If there is a glued on fret board (whether maple, as in this case, or rosewood) - then you don't have the stripe, you install the truss rod and cover it after with the fret board. If you have a solid maple neck (no fret board as a separate glued on top of the neck element), then you cut the channel for the truss rod on the back and cover it after with a stripe of dark wood.

There's really something about that green color- especially when you see it in person and it's in yr hands. It's truly a thing of beauty. Guitars are already aesthetically pleasant to begin with- but that damn green color elevates the whole package to a higher plane of existence. Back in the 90's when I was poor, I HAD to have a Jazzmaster, so I put one on layaway and paid for it over time (a MIJ Candy Red with matching headstock). I would sit it against the wall and just stare at it with the lights down low. May have fondled it naked by candlelight too, but we won't talk about it. It's our secret. I also have a small palm, but I am extremely reluctant to have a classic 25,5" with a narrow neck. Typical feature for Strats and Teles! I really enjoy fingering my 25.5 "wide neck natural instrument - there is enough room for a "small" hand too! Mustangs and Duo-Sonics are much, much more comfortable in this place - shorter mensure but lot of stringspace - like real guitars reduced proportionately! I like Mustangs - not for long, only the last 42 years! :) The mystery is the use of "tempered" Telecaster saddles! This so-called compensation is calculated for 6% longer vibrating string. But 6% means a +/- quarter tone offset from stright tuning...

The 90’s version has Standard ceramic MIM Strat pickups (higher output compared to the modern offset/player series alnico pickups). Does it not? Swap out the modern offset duo Sonic low output pickups for Strat pickups for a livelier tone. And maybe a thicker gauge string because why not. If anybody tried this. Lmk how it sounds!

Regarding the string through vs over the top. I don't think one is better than the other. They're just different. As an artist, I like to relate it to paint brushes. You use different types of brushes for different textures, and I feel guitars are the same way. I don't know about all this sustain I hear about on a string through, I feel the biggest difference is in the way the note swells. I feel string through has a sharper attack. Like if I was to visualize it, I would see the over the top being a round bump, where as the string through would quickly spike, then slowly decay. I believe the sharper attack gives it a more percussive sound that I like to use for some palm muted funk, or skanky ska rhythms. Just throwing my opinion out there, since you asked.
@ptrisonic
@ptrisonic 4 жыл бұрын
Er, it doesn't matter which end the truss rod adjustment is. All true vintage fifties Strats had a skunk stripe and adjustment at the butt end. What it usually means is that it has a maple cap fretboard and the truss rod was fitted from the front before the fretboard was stuck to the rest of the neck. Truss this helps. Sorry ;)...... Best, Pete.

The '93 pickguard is single ply vs. multi-ply on the newer ones although you can get thicker replacements for the '90's series. The pickguards on the 90's ones are very fragile. The previous teen owner of mine cracked it in several places in a misguided pickup swap that also destroyed the electronics.

Your experiments with pickups and not sounding the same as the 1993 should include matching the pots and caps as exact as you can using a meter for actual measured values. Pots have normal factory tolerance range of 20% and it matters bright/dark output tones. Caps have a 10% tolerance range. (and pickups themselves have some unpublished tolerance, lol). So if you want to compare pickups you always need to account for keeping the same controls (they control the tone!) as well. Having a 22inch scale travel guitar I can say the 24inch would be a better choice for a daily driver and Fender made a better plan for the new ones.

I got my Black '94 Duo-Sonic R.I. for only $175 back in 2010 when I just 16, (it was a gift from my step-dad for surviving my nightmarish Sophomore year of High School), but it was really beat-up. At a glance, it looked near mint and pretty perfect, but, the pickguard was lifted towards the bridge pickup (the previous owner used it for their picks), the nut was loose (I had to glue it in), the tone control wasn't wired properly and the hardware on the body was rusted. It was all original parts, but I recently just upgraded it. I love the look and tone, but it could use a few more mods. It's my dream guitar, but I definitely got a bad one, hence the low price. (I've seen beaten up '98 Affinity Squiers go for more than mine...) Anyway, question for you, Ryan: Do you go light with your strings on your R.I. or do you go with a more standard gauge? Personally, I go super, extra light.

its a different bridge shape so probably not, many pickguard sites will cut a custom pickguard for you if you send them a trace of the original. Ive never done that before bu i know its an option.

I love my 90's reissue for all the reasons you don't like yours. The problem with mine is soft fret wire that wore out quickly. Also when you put the switch on both pickups (middle position) it puts the 2 pickups in series essentially making a noiseless humbucker out of them. Handy in noisy environments and a pleasing slightly mellower fuller tone...B^ )

So... the tuning is standard tuning? Because a think the scale lenght would afect the way you tune the guitar like in the baritone guitars. My question might be stupid but please, release me of my ignorance.
@60CycleHumcast
@60CycleHumcast 6 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Miranda you can tune them standard, if you wanted to tune a guitar higher, like to F# or G a short scale would work well, though I’ve never heard of anyone doing that

for reference, Brian May's guitar has a 24" scale length. I built a 24" scale guitar and it is a dream to play, in standard tuning. To get the same tension as a Fender (25 1/2" ) scale, you need 10 gauge strings, but I use 9s and still like them.

To be honest, I prefer the "looks" of the 90's version. But the built quality and probably the tone too, is better on the new ones.

@60CycleHumcast
@60CycleHumcast 5 жыл бұрын
is it a 90s mim? those are super short scale, i like to keep 13s on those. the recent ones are longer scale and you should just use what you usually use or one gauge higher on them.

@@60CycleHumcast thanks for your reply. Yes it is 90s mim. i was also thinking to change tuning pegs. which ones you suggest? i think you said grover mini? The other thing that it is not so fine for me is the quality of the frets. They need levelling because some of them are damaged.

@@_Teo__ bummer about the frets, yeah i have grovers in mine, but really any modern tuner will be a huge improvement. my duo sonic wasn't really playable till i put new tuners in it. you will need to reem the holes to get new tuners to fit, but its worth it.

Ah okay, well I'm caught between A mim duo Sonic for 400 and a squier vintage modified jazzmaster for 270. I'd really appreciate some advice :)
@GregStallion
@GregStallion 5 жыл бұрын
@@fetalmossy117 Hey, Bawsh. Please be sure to read my other comment regarding the '94 Duo-Sonic R.I. Anyway, in regard to the Squier Vintage Modified, unless is the Special model, I wouldn't pay over $250, and if it's noticeably, yet not severely used, I wouldn't pay over $210. If it's super beat up, the most I'd pay is $150-$175. I've owned two pre-owned Squier Vintaged Modifieds: an original 2010 Telecaster Custom Deluxe I (the first version without the Fender-engraved humbucker covers and the traditional Tele headstock) and an original 2010 V.M. 70's Style Jazz Bass, (also obviously first generation with the super cheap binding and the actual Seymour Duncan-branded pickups.) They are both super cheap instruments and are some of the worst things Squier has ever put out for slightly more expensive models. If the Jazzmaster you're looking at was purchased within the excellent condition, is the Special model and/or the seller is gonna provide you with a gig bag or something, than maybe I'd advise paying around $270, as the new ones go for about $400. Even though I have yet to play any of them, I know this new series of Vintage Modified guitars and basses seem much better. It's your call, but I'd personally recommend buying a brand new one off of Sweetwater and doing their 3-month payment plan. It's only a $10 fee and you get the guitar right away.
@GregStallion
@GregStallion 5 жыл бұрын
@@fetalmossy117 Also, once again, it depends. I got my '94 R.I. for $175 and it needed a new pickguard and currently needs a trust rod adjustment and new frets. (It's always need it, but I got it 8 years ago when I was still a kid in high school and I've never had the time, money or resources to repair it.) The frets are exposed on all '93 - '97 MIM Fenders and '89 Chinese Squiers, so please be aware of that, and the pickguards are super cheap. (My pickguard was warped and my frets are literally lifted and popping out of the fretboard.) These guitars were very cheaply produced and people got very different ones--even when they were brand new on the market in the '90s. Many people I know bought ones with bad wiring, myself included. (My tone was never wired properly and there was no evidence pre-repair that it had ever been tampered with--it just wasn't soldered properly.) So yeah, it's a gamble buying them at any price, especially when heavily used. It's my baby, but that's because I have tiny-ass hands, super weird tastes, and am in a crappy Ween-inspired band. I'd recommend buying the new ones. The most I'd ever pay for an original R.I. in near mint condition would be $400, but for anything else still original, but obviously less than very good, I wouldn't pay over $350, and as Ryan said, they should usually go for no higher than $300. Modded-out and refinished/repainted or something to a point where it's word class-level job, I'd pay upwards to $450, but that's about it. At such high prices, it's really just not worth the risk. I'd advise buying one of the new 2017 Offset ones for like $100-$150 more.
